Post Christmas Blues

Anyone else struggling with the post Christmas blues?!

We stayed with family over the Christmas period and have just got home today. I'm so sad it's all over! Feeling really low after having such a high.

OP posts:
StiggyZardust · 01/01/2023 23:28

I'm the complete opposite. Christmas at home was dull. We're at a friend's house for New Year, can't wait to get home and get back to normal.

Meltinthemiddle · 01/01/2023 23:39

Only because I have to go back to work.

noimaginationforausername · 01/01/2023 23:39

Yep same here, dreading Tuesday and everything going back to normal. All the planning and kids excitement is finished, it's miserable!

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 01/01/2023 23:43

Yes. Feels awful.
Even though we save it feels like too much of a spend!
I'm wondering how to whittle it down next year .

Now DC are older I think the focus is more on quality not quantity. ...and meals out.
Nice food....

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 01/01/2023 23:44

And the grey flat dismal month of January.

Enbite · 01/01/2023 23:45

A bit on xmas day after it was all over but after a few more days of seeing people and eating too much I feel like I’m all christmassed out and looking forward to the new year!

We did so much this Christmas and really made the most of it which helps.

TeeBee · 01/01/2023 23:46

I just want to get back to work. I'm bored stiff.

Greenshake · 01/01/2023 23:46

Yes, especially as it all seemed a bit more low key this year as well. It’s like it never happened as all the lights and decs have gone.

ShowOfHands · 01/01/2023 23:47

I feel so blue. I keep telling myself that it's as special as it is because it's only once a year and brief but brilliant. But I still feel glum.

LillianGish · 02/01/2023 00:01

You need to somehow find a way to keep the vibe going, but in a more low-key way. We’re not long back after Christmas away, but we still have all the decorations and lights to give a cosy glow. I’ve been enjoying catching up with a bit of Christmas telly that I couldn’t watch while we were away. I’m also enjoying some of my presents - pampering shower gels, scented candles etc. I always keep the decorations until 12th night then I enjoy carefully packing them all away in tissue for next year. We are in France so Jan 6 is a bit of an event. Better to be feeling a bit flat after a cracking Christmas than relieved it’s all over after a miserable time!

ADifferentKindofChristmas · 02/01/2023 00:12

This is precisely we always book to go away in January.

Las Vegas & The Grand Canyon for DH and I this year.

QuietOne121 · 02/01/2023 00:15

Yeah I struggle in January, just a sadness that it’s been and gone again.

I love the long slow build-up, the days getting colder and darker, not to get too soppy but the days beforehand almost feel magical, it just puts me in a good mood.

Everywhere looks really nice with the lights. I even enjoy going into work the days leading up to Christmas as there’s something to look forward too.

Some other people in work are the same and there’s nearly a general giddiness ahead of getting off work for 2 week+ and enjoy the festivities.

I can’t wait to give everyone the surprises and presents I’ve got them.
Then it comes and goes too quick, back into the darkness of January, no time off work for a couple of months. Just a general sadness and feeling flat.

I’ll get over it and life goes on but just sad thats
it for another year.

JonahAndTheSnail · 02/01/2023 00:30

I dislike the New Year slump. Always feel torn between not wanting to go back to work, but on the other hand, the introvert in me looks forward to having days off work where I can be alone in the house again. I always hate how bare the house looks when the tree and decorations come down, so I'm thinking of investing/crafting a few tasteful seasonal pieces for throughout the year.

I'm showing my age by saying this but...Christmas starts and ends way too early now. I saw houses with their real trees turfed out on the street by Boxing Day and it felt a bit sad. I hope trends shift back to having a longer gap between Halloween and Christmas and that people start normalising keeping their Christmas decorations up until twelfth night or a little after. It just brightens up the winter months for that little bit longer.

Onlinuar · 02/01/2023 00:55

I’ve got this too! Carried on the Christmas feasting to compensate so feeling bloated as well as blue.

Canthave2manycats · 02/01/2023 01:00

Meltinthemiddle · 01/01/2023 23:39

Only because I have to go back to work.

Same!

PriOn1 · 02/01/2023 06:26

I was intending on taking a week’s holiday in January, but someone else got in there first. I have a week off in March, but the time in between looks a bit relentless right now. Hopefully, once I’m back in work, it’ll feel a bit better.

I have had a lovely Christmas, just not enough of a break.

Havehope21 · 02/01/2023 07:07

@QuietOne121 this is exactly how I feel. I love how in December (and I suppose nowadays, towards the end of November), there is an extra buzz and magic in the air. I love the cosy evenings, twinkling lights, Christmas carols - everything just seems more purposeful. I know I will get over it, but I can't help feeling so 'lost' that it is over for another year (this might sound really sad but on the 25th of each month I think - oooh xxx days to Christmas).
To be honest, I am not a big fan of summer at all - and definitely not spring.

Hey ho... counting down until next autumn when we can prepare to do it all over again!

Bubbylana · 02/01/2023 07:45

Feeling blue as my DH is going back to work after 2 weeks off. His not in the Forces or works on an oil rig his an electrician and will be home by 6 on tuesday eve. He has been under my feet but I will miss him being here in the day as im retired and home alone. Must get a volunteer job in the new year. Dont really mind Jan though as its my Birthday month except I will be 68 this year but dont feel or I am told look it.

WrappedInRed · 02/01/2023 08:21

I have this feeling every year and usually I can feel it creeping in the evening of Christmas day!

I love the build up as well and always feel flat afterwards but this year something felt different and I think it's because I did a lot of gift buying early to make sure I fully enjoyed December without worrying about wrapping and gift buying. I think this made it feel a bit different this year.

WrappedInRed · 02/01/2023 08:25

Also I agree with catching up with Christmas TV and using scented candles, bath and shower stuff etc. 😊 I've also enjoyed putting dates in my new diary for this year. Looking forward to dates in the calendar.

whatisforteamum · 02/01/2023 08:37

No I'm hyped to get back to work.Too boring for me I could have used half that amount of time.

warofthemonstertrucks · 02/01/2023 08:44

I get over this by trimming up (a bit) for Valentine's Day and (a lot) for Easter.
(We lived in North America for a bit where v day is a big deal so that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it). Otherwise I find the house looks boring all year except for Christmas.
I've been poorly since beginning December so christmas was a damp squib a bit this year-so now I feel doubly cheated!

BeatriceBatchelor · 02/01/2023 09:57

Agreed. I know some people love the build up to Christmas but I find it can be too frenetic. Much prefer these calmer days afterwards with the lights still up and lovely things to do that don't involve buying stuff.

And how can anyone not love Spring?

Catshavefeelingstoo · 02/01/2023 10:13

I'm having the post Christmas anxiety as going back to work tomorrow and could do with a few more weeks off!

LillianGish · 02/01/2023 10:29

Much prefer these calmer days afterwards with the lights still up and lovely things to do that don't involve buying stuff that's exactly it! I love the build up, but I love these days too in a different way. And I also like @WrappedInRed's idea of putting some new dates in the diary. When the decorations eventually come down, I actually enjoy creating a calm, uncluttered space though I generally leave a string of fairy lights up to see me through the dark nights and usually treat myself to a bowl of hyacinths or other bulbs to remind me spring is on the way.
