First of all I just want to say that I know this is a completely first world problem and not even a problem at all.

It's just a feeling I've had this year. I usually love Christmas, all the little traditions, but this year although I've enjoyed the build up, and everything has gone so well. The actual day has felt really flat.

It just seems to have come round again really quickly. Eldest is a teenager so done this so many times, I'd probably be quite happy to ignore it all for a year, but got to keep the magic going for the dc especially youngest.

Desperate to get back to normal now.

Not yet. I give it 24 hours more.

many years though - definitely

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/12/2022 21:01

Not me. Its only just started, another 11 days to go.Xmas Grin

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 25/12/2022 21:05

Yeah, I’m done.

I feel so, so unwell. The house is a mess. I’m just exhausted. Have two LONG shifts tomorrow and Tuesday.

Spending Wednesday in bed recovering then on Thursday it can all be put away and the house have a good clean.

(And no, I didn’t have the tree up in November before anyone asks).

itwasntmetho · 25/12/2022 21:08

Yeah I’m over it. They spin around too quickly. Looking forward to taking the tree down tomorrow.

Hollyhead · 25/12/2022 21:12

No, I worked flat out and was ill until 23rd, have barely had a minute to enjoy anything yet. Off work now until January and we’ll be full on Christmas until new year, seeing family, nice food/drink, lazy afternoons etc. if you’ve been full on Christmas for weeks though I can see why you’d be over it by now.

Fuwari · 25/12/2022 21:13

I'm on leave until the 3rd so Christmas will last until then! I am loving having the "excuse" to lounge around and eat cake, watch naff movies and generally not feel pressuried to be productive in some way. My DC are in their 30s! So have been doing this for many years! But I am in no rush to go back to every day life.

illiterato · 25/12/2022 21:23

I know what you mean. I feel very disconnected from it this year. It’s been perfectly fine and pleasant but just a bit meh.

Soccermumamir · 26/12/2022 11:05

I could of written this myself. I love the build up to Xmas, but my eldest is 16 now and feels a bit 'same old' on the day itself. We had a lovely morning but the afternoon was a bit rushed and stressful so I'm changing things up next year.
I love Boxing Day though. This is the best day for me 😊

lollipoprainbow · 26/12/2022 11:10

The flat feeling creeps in on Christmas Eve and by Christmas Day I'm totally fed up. I adore the weeks before when the decorations go up and the tree is twinkling and lovely. Buying the presents, food etc. watching some nice things on tv but Christmas Day itself I don't like !!

Notonyournellykelly · 26/12/2022 11:16

I'm feeling quite relaxed now. We've had quite a busy run up to Christmas, then the day was fairly chilled. It's all the school shows and other activities for my DCs before Christmas which are a bit stressy. The actual day is nice and we all slept like logs last night as we were tired. We have some more time off now and some outings planned which definitely helps.

Bestcatmum · 26/12/2022 11:17

Of course it feels flat. It starts in September and is hyped up to the max in adverts and the media. It is impossible to live up to this hype.

SnowAndIceLobelia · 26/12/2022 11:19

I have that lurgy that is going around and although I am mostly over it yesterday wiped me out. Completely.

I have not even managed to sort breakfast out yet. Dh sorted himself out and the Dcs are stuffed on chocolate and did not want any- which I am going with for now.

Exactly this! I remember popping into a shop for Halloween costumes and there was more stuff out for Xmas rather than Halloween. I was fuming.

My friend bought herself a cream egg on Xmas Eve. WTH!!?! It's crazy!

DuncanBiscuits · 26/12/2022 11:21

I always feel like that on Christmas Day. I love Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, but the weight of expectation is too much on the day itself and I end up a bit miserable and flat.

lightand · 26/12/2022 11:22

Take a year off next year.

Or do something different.
One year when younger, I did go out for a Christmas meal. With me it only took the one year to work out that was not what I wanted to repeat. It was ok and all that, but have not done it since.

I agree the weight of expectation, The Dcs were quite flat and a little weepy last night. Just all that expectation and excitement then over.

PinkHeadphones · 26/12/2022 11:24

No. We put the tree up on 16 December, it’ll come down on 6 January and Christmas will continue until then , even though I am at work from the 4th! I agree that everything starting so early makes people sick of Christmas by the day itself but I just try to block my ears to it all.

WrappedInRed · 26/12/2022 11:27

Not bored but every year usually on Christmas day I feel flat as the day goes on as it goes so quickly and I'm usually hosting! This year because I made sure I was really organised I managed to enjoy the days before Christmas, specifically Christmas eve, and was so much calmer on Christmas day. I love boxing day too 🎅

Livelovebehappy · 26/12/2022 11:31

I love the bit after Xmas - thinking of the year ahead. We are planning on moving home and planning some lovely breaks away. I’m like this every year, as soon as Christmas day is over, i just love planning for the next twelve months. It feels like November and December are just spent planning for Xmas.

EmergentThoughts · 26/12/2022 11:40

We kept everything low key this year, no elf on the shelf, no advent calendars, no constant stream of Christmas films and treats. Decorations went up the 2nd week of December, we celebrated solstice, the other day the youngest DC bought token gifts with pocket money from the local charity shop, Christmas eve was relaxed, with an easy bedtime. December at home was a really positive experience, and I will repeat it next year as much as I can. There is a LOT of hype, and schools push most of it in my experience, so keeping things calm and routine at home helped to offset it a fair bit.

Having said that, I'm glad it's over and I am looking forward to the spring, in all honesty.

girlfriend44 · 26/12/2022 12:46

Yes it's very boring, year in year out. Might be better if it was every 4 years like the world Cup.
Wouldn't bother me if we didn't have it at all.
Love Summer and would be content with a permanent Summer to be honest .
Never get all this presents stuff either. Maybe a present on your bday but why Christmas?
You've only got to look at how much stress and expense present buying gets by the threads on here to know it would be less stressful without them and all the falseness.

illiterato · 26/12/2022 23:05

So having posted up thread, had an absolutely brilliant Boxing Day- brief sea swim, DH’s friends came for coffee and mince pies after, boozy lunch with DH’s dad and family, and then just fun and chatting till now when we’re all off to bed. Maybe better as no expectations. Shrug.
