How ill do you think you can get away with and still go to christmas at a family members house?

Flu sure stay at home, same with covid. But what if its a cold. Or chickenpox?

xmaslurgy · 23/12/2022 21:02

Asking as we all have some sort of Xmas lurgie and one of the SIL's kids has chickenpox and I'm wondering if they'll still go.

chickenpox no, although if family were relaxed I might not completely check that every spot had crusted over whereas I would of out in public etc.

Id probably go if I had a cold, again if there was no one vulnerable and if everyone was ok with it.

Conkered · 23/12/2022 21:05

I normally check with whoever is hosting as to what they are happy with. I've friends/family who would not like us to come if unwell and others who completely don't mind at all!

upfucked · 23/12/2022 21:08

Chicken has always been a no. I would say anyone with a fever or s and d within the last 48 hours.

Cuwins · 23/12/2022 21:11

At my close family : Stomach bug within last 24hrs no, 48hrs would ask. Cold fine. Chicken pox absolutely not, covid absolutely not. Any sort of temp and I would check.
At anyone else's house I would be asking if I was at all under the weather. I might not know if someone there was particularly vulnerable for a start.

maddy68 · 23/12/2022 21:15

I think it depends if you are contagious and likely to make others Il you refrain. Otherwise go!

LetUsPonce · 23/12/2022 21:19

Mild cold - go.
Heavy cold - ask.
Chicken pox - not go.
Covid - not go.
Stomach bug - not go until had been completely clear for 48 hours.
'Flu - redundant question as there's no question of going anywhere with real 'flu. Just making it to the bathroom is an odyssey.

FiveShelties · 23/12/2022 21:19

Chicken Pox definitely no. I got that at age 50 and I was really ill.

To be honest I would not want to give any of my family/friends anything - well apart from presents, of course.

spidereggs · 23/12/2022 21:21

What do you mean still go? If you are also unwell?

Not wouldn't go in either case

This - surely this is just sensible. If you think you're contagious or could make other people ill, then you stay at home, even if it means you're home alone and miserable. Common sense!

Mild cold - ask
Heavy cold - don't go

TheNoodlesIncident · 23/12/2022 21:35

Mild cold - go.
Heavy cold - ask.

I'm not sure this is sensible. It's not necessarily the viruses that are weak or strong, it's other people's immune systems. What would be a light cold for me could be awful and debilitating for my mum's partner, who is fragile these days.

I think any bug, I would stay at home. You can usually meet up at a later date.

Ok thank you! Yes I was thinking the same lines. I'm hoping little ones chicken pox heals over !

We'd literally never all meet up until summer at that rate and who knows if somone might die by then

I was thinking we might be ok to go with our lurgie which is some sort of viral thing I think. SIL is the one who has a child with chicken pox. We're going to a 3rd family member's house.

Any stomach bug stay away. I wouldn't welcome you with a cold but that's just me.

DingDangMintyBells · 23/12/2022 21:39

With chicken pox it totally depends on the group. The grandparents were the only people I did see when mine had it as they had all had it. If anyone is pregnant or there are young children there you stay away.

pizzaHeart · 23/12/2022 21:40

Mild cold and cough - ask ( some things are mild today - heavy tomorrow)
heavy cold, flu, Covid , chicken pox - absolutely not
stomach bug - will go after 48 hours

saltedpretzel2 · 23/12/2022 21:40

What about if everyone's had chicken pox and the child is well in themselves would you go then?

How long to stay away with covid?

Interested as I ve got covid and staying away Christmas Day and Boxing Day but not sure about what to do about friends next week.

Currently I feel too poorly to go anywhere. Last time I had covid I tested positive for ages after so do I just go if feeling better?

It's entirely possible to have mild flu that feels like a cold.

It is estimated that one in three flu infections are asymptomatic.

So it is simply not true that you would not be able to go anywhere if you had flu.

VahineNuiWentHome · 23/12/2022 21:43

For covid, I did a test every other day until it was negative.
I wouldn’t have gone with a still positive test.

Some people can test positive for ages after. A colleague of mine was nearly a month.
Grandparents here had it recently and we told them 10 days or 2 days of negative tests in a row.

With chicken pox I think it's really important you ask as you might not know if someone is very early stages of pregnancy

You can get Chicken Pox twice, so makes no difference if they have had it before.
