Father Christmas or Santa?

Not sure if its just me, but Santa seems so Americanised. It's always been father Christmas in our house but I think we're in the minority?

We were always Father Christmas in our family when we were growing up. I agree Santa is very American and does seem to be taking over somewhat.

popandchoc · 21/12/2022 11:15

Either here. I know Santa is common in Scotland so don't think its necessarily Americanised.

VioletCreams · 21/12/2022 11:17

Santa here in Scotland. Have never called him Father Christmas in all of my 40-odd years. Also known as ‘Sunty’ 🎅🏻 where I’m from

DaisyWaldron · 21/12/2022 11:18

I'm Irish, so it's Santa. DH is English, so he says Father Christmas. The children use both interchangeably.

FleeceDuvet · 21/12/2022 11:19

Definitely FC but I do find myself saying Santa more these days. It’s a language creep.

notacooldad · 21/12/2022 11:20

Its interchangeable in our house ( children are now adults)
It was the same when I was a child ( I'm 57 now)

bizzywiththefizzy · 21/12/2022 11:21

Oh god I did wonder what day Santy ,Santa ,Father Christmas would make an appearance . Now I know it's Christmas 😂

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 21/12/2022 11:23

Oh here we go.

Anything that's different is 'so American'.

SweetSakura · 21/12/2022 11:28

Always Father Christmas here.

ohioriver · 21/12/2022 11:31

Santa.

Scottish/Irish family

Ncgirlseriously · 21/12/2022 11:32

Both, but mostly Santa these days. I have spent a lot of time in Scotland (used to live there and family still do) and it’s Santa up there.

Also Father Christmas just feels kinda formal an a bit of a mouthful.

Sugarfree23 · 21/12/2022 11:33

Santa / Santa Claus
And it even make more sense as its derived from Saint Nicholas

ouch321 · 21/12/2022 11:37

London

Father Xmas

Lyricallie · 21/12/2022 11:38

And the annual Scottish people have allowed “Americanisms” to creep in thread makes an appearance. It’s Santa. My grandma from down south used to say FC but we just thought she was posh.

BigPurpleArm · 21/12/2022 11:39

It was always father Christmas when I was growing up (90's in the Midlands) but DC and I use both Santa and father Christmas interchangeably as most people seem to use Santa.

HoHoHowMuch · 21/12/2022 11:39

I say Father Christmas, the kids say Santa. I don't think of it as American though. I grew up with St. Nicholas on 6th December.

TrashyPanda · 21/12/2022 11:41

Always Santa. Which is not American. Why would you think that? Scotland has always said Santa and that’s a whole lot closer than USA.

FC seems very English, therefore “foreign” to us. Seems very cold and formal, where Santa is warm and cuddly.

KirstenBlest · 21/12/2022 11:44

Father Christmas, or Siôn Corn

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 21/12/2022 11:45

It was always Santa/Santy for me growing up in Dublin.

The only people I knew who said 'Father Christmas' were children in Enid Blyton books. I've always thought it sounded quaint but I'd feel like such a fraud saying it myself.

MyKidsAreKnobsInDecember · 21/12/2022 11:46

Can't believe I've made it to the 21st December before my first 'Santa is Americanised' MN thread of the year. Must be time to break out the mulled wine cos its Christmas time baby!

Stichintime · 21/12/2022 11:48

Work with bi lingual children and we used 'Father Christmas' for their letters. I guess we were teaching them you use the formal address if you are writing to someone you don't know personally!

OrlandointheWilderness · 21/12/2022 11:50

Father Christmas here

MajorCarolDanvers · 21/12/2022 11:52

Every single year.....

Santa is Scottish
Santy is NI
Father Christmas is English
Not sure about the Welsh.

TommyShelby · 21/12/2022 11:53

Siôn Corn for me too

SlicerAndEcho · 21/12/2022 11:56

Father Christmas. DC3 says Santa a bit.
