Father christmas chat

Just occurred to me that you there seems to be a general trend on MN that as soon as DC hits secondary school parents have a chat putting to bed the whole father christmas idea. With those DC who still believe/play along with it past the age of about 11/12 must be on Asd/SEN or something similar (I forgot all the acronyms).

I have 3 DC, eldest 2 are just 12 & nearly 11 who either still believe or just play along with it whilst youngest is 6 and very much still fully signed up. I know they will get to an age when too old etc but with younger siblings, I'm happy to play along with it for a while yet.

I don't remember having a chat with my parents or officially being told about it.

Am I being a nieve parent or just someone who likes seeing this part of Christmas?

I find it strange too. I never had a chat with my mum either and never got upset when found out it was just a gradual realisation.
I doubt that kids have a discussion in high school and come home distraught about the truth about Santa.

I’m 35, DS are 22 and 36. We still get presents from “Father Christmas” and would be blasphemy in my house to say you don’t believe, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t after the age of about 6. I don’t really see why you’d need to have a sit-down chat with a secondary school child about this if you’re attempting to raise children who know how to use basic logic and critical thinking.

Otoh, Christmas itself is a celebration of a magic guy who, in being murdered by the romans, “saved” us all from a not-quite specified fate possibly involving being tortured or set on fire for eternity, and then came back to life. And was supposedly conceived without his young mother ever having sex with her elderly husband. So if you’re going to ask your children to keep believing that kind of thing till adulthood, I suppose it’s reasonable to be clear with them which magical faith-based beliefs aren’t socially acceptable (Santa).
