Specs wearers - would this be a good present or not?

I'm thinking of buying someone an experience for Christmas, where they get the chance to scubadive in an aquarium. They really love visiting the place, so I think it would be a good present - the only qualm I have is they can't wear their glasses with a scuba mask.

How much would that detract from the experience?

Just to add, I was rather hoping this thread might be about an exciting new glasses-related gadget Grin

I'm frequently a terrible disappointment :D

Me too. Was getting excited. I can’t see much beyond the end of my nose without my glasses.

Pterrydactyl · 20/12/2022 17:03

It really does depend on how bad their eyesight is.

I have to wear glasses for driving, but my prescription is minor enough that I’d be fine doing scuba diving with just the standard goggles.

DH, on the other hand, has a very strong prescription and can barely see a thing without his glasses on.

Prescottdanni123 · 20/12/2022 17:08

Depends how bad their eyesight is. Some people can see quite well without them on but benefit from wearing them in terms of seeing smaller details/reading from a distance. Some people can barely see without them.

Are contacts alright to wear with a scuba mask? They do use them.

If they don’t use them currently then do not presume they could. It’s whether they can wear mask with glasses only- if not do not do it. If they’re short sighted and can’t wear glasses it’s frankly dangerous

Favouritefruits · 20/12/2022 17:24

You really shouldn’t dive or swim in contacts it can cause blindness, we found out the hard way with my husband, it’s really dangerous and people don’t realise, unless the mask is 100% leak proof I wouldn’t bother.

Fine for me, my prescription is mild. DP would get a migraine and die, probably.

I don’t know why this made me laugh so much! I hope you’re being sarcastic and pointing out a man’s general OTT reaction to something minor, else I feel bad for laughing 😂

Oh god love you, thank you, I've been going all over the shop with this one. One minute I think they're going to go blind and the next it's fine 😅

Just to add, are they likely to want to scuba dive? You couldn’t pay me to scuba dive, and my glasses would just give handy excuse.

category12 · 20/12/2022 18:39

Oh yes, I believe so.

Grin Haha! 100% the latter: his morning rummage for spectacles on the bedside table is practically performance art. Let alone when he puts contact lenses in, which involves lying down and half a bottle of lens solution dramatically squeezed in while he shakes his head in slow motion, coming thisclose to needing David Attenborough narration about the hippo at its watering hole.

You can definitely dive with contacts in, I did the same as @ChristmasTidyings and wore dailies for a couple of PADI courses. My minus 10s wouldn't have been great otherwise!

This also sounds like an AMAZING gift.....mooches off to google!

If they use disposable contacts, and take them out straight after the dive, then it will be fine. I scuba dive regularly and do this and have never had a problem. They should warn the instructor they are wearing them so that the instructor allows them to keep their eyes closed when doing any mask-off drills.

They should take a spare pair in case one gets lost in the water!

They shouldn't use monthlies though, only disposables because of the very small risk of infection.

If their prescription is minor then they might be fine without, but as -3 I wouldn't enjoy it much without contacts.

Scuba is so much fun so this would be a great gift!

If they got really into it you can buy prescription masks.

Ha ha, to me (-11/12), -3 is minor short-sightedness!

As others have said, depends on what their prescription is/what type of contacts they wear. I wouldn't be able to see a thing! I used to have a postcard that said something like "Some people need their glasses to drive their car; I need my glasses to find mine!" 🤣

hiredandsqueak · 20/12/2022 20:04

@Daffodilsinbloom37 I have a similar prescription with astigmatism, one memorable occasion I had to call my adult son to come and find my dd's specs as she couldn't see without hers and I can't see well enough, even with specs on, to see something that I don't know roughly where it is.

Me too, if I knock my glasses off the bedside cabinet at night its a disaster. It's nice that I get free sight tests though since I went past -10.

I wear specs 'by law'... aka someone else decided Im blind enough to be a menace to good road using people without lol.

I dont wear specs by choice (I have had my eyes all my life, I am 100% use to and adjusted to my blindness and how I see the world + having something balanced on me is irratating).

I wouldn't be remotely bothered by not wearing glasses.

however my friend at uni who we discovered has the exact same glasses prescription as me wore his constantly and was very irratated by having to take them off.

So I dont even think its about 'eyesight' but rather much more about a persons personality (same with other disabilities too - I have a friend with a prostetic leg after a car crash who was scared after his accident of ending up in a wheelchair and I had a great aunt in a wheelchair for decade who REFUSED to even try to use a prostetic leg and was happy in a wheelchair).

Erm, what?!

It's someone's 'personality' as to how well they can see without glasses? 🤣

Can I ask what your prescription is?

If my vision wasn't able to be corrected with glasses, it would be considered legally blind... Are you saying that people who are blind should just act like they can see and then they will be able to?

Your post is shockingly ignorant.

No vision simulator goes up to my prescription, but this is quite an accurate depiction of my vision without glasses, my vision is possibly even a bit worse. So if I didn't wear my glasses, I would just get used to it, right?

Ah, that must be tough that your glasses don't correct your vision enough to be able to see well even with them.
