We range in ages 14 to 78.
Don't think a board game would be practical so looking for something along the lines of charades etc.
16 yo DS recommended Crimes Against Humanity??

Don't do CAH if there are people in the group who could be easily offended! I wouldn't let my kids play it with my parents.

If he means cards against humanity I’d look at reviews first, it’s designed to make people say awful things and some guests might not be comfortable with that. There is a family version available now though.

What about Pictionary? You could do it on big flip paper things in teams

Herd Mentality is designed to be played by up to 20 people, quite silly and inoffensive, suitable for all ages. I played last Christmas with 5/6 adults and it was fun.

We play a game where everyone buys two little presents (used to be a £1 limit but might have it up it this year) and wraps them. You start the game with two present sun front of you and take it in turns rolling two dice. Each die is treated separately, with one applying to one present and the other to the other (you choose which each time).

If you roll a:
1 - swap a present with the person on your left
2 - swap a present with the person on your right
3 or 4 - swap a present with anyone you like
5 - do nothing (comes in very useful later on in the game when you have things you want)
6 - unwrap a present

The game ends when all the presents are unwrapped and you keep whatever you have. Usually what happens when there is one present left to open is everyone keeps choosing to swap for it so it takes even longer for everything to get opened. We normally play it with 6-10 people. So with more than that you might want to have two sets of dice going round, or split into two circles (and having 3 be swap with anyone and 4 be choose someone to swap circles with).

Usually there’s a couple of things everyone wants and they keep moving around the circle and everyone gets very into it and competitive. One year it was the Festive Friends. Last year it was a box of shortbread and everyone was avoiding the toilet roll!

Hope I’ve explained that properly!

Cards against maturity is the PG version of Cards against humanity.
We have both and play them according to who is around.
I’d really recommend them.

emmathedilemma · 19/12/2022 12:07

If you've got a 14yr old I'd go for the family version of Cards Against Humanity but I wouldn't personally play it with my parents. Uni friends / peers yes, but some people could be very offended by it.

Articulate!

Giggorata · 19/12/2022 12:09

I like the sound of that presents game! Has it got a name?

We like CAH, but have to screen our guests carefully.
Consequences can be good.
Balderdash is quite fun.

Does anyone in the group have a Nintendo Switch they can bring? Jackbox make a huge variety of games you can play on your tv via a smartphone or tablet (assuming everyone has access to one). I know it sounds like everyone will be sat staring at their phone but the games are designed to be as interactive as possible. There are quiz style games, creative ones, puzzles etc. they have released lots of packs now so it’s worth taking your time to look at reviews/videos to see what will suit your group.

We’ve played Bingo at Christmas since I was little and I’m now late 50s , works for all ages ( we have no children at Christmas now ) , everyone contributes to prizes and it’s all fun and good natured .

Blueemeraldagain · 19/12/2022 12:17

Otherwise Trial by Trolley has a cards against humanity-ness to it but less “edgy” and is designed to be played in teams.

Startuplife · 19/12/2022 12:28

I always put together a Christmas quiz/game on Google Slides and then hook my laptop up to the TV so everyone can see it easily. I’ll usually pre allocate teams as well to get people chatting especially if they don’t know each other well.
This year we’ve got a few different rounds like catchphrase, horse racing where I add YouTube links to recorded obscure races, clips from TV where they have to guess what happens next etc. If you Google there’s loads of pre made quizzes online that you can use rather than having to think up questions.
I didn’t realise how loved it was until one year I didn’t make one and everyone was so disappointed!

You’re a teacher, aren’t you?

Startuplife · 19/12/2022 13:24

Absolutely not a teacher no 😂 but do lead teams at work and often do “organised fun” at the end of a quarter/year so generally reuse a lot of that content

We have played the sock game with groups of different sizes and different ages.

You have enough large socks - 1 for each group or person
In each sock you put a collection of small identical objects e.g. a coin, elastic band, pen, tea spoon, etc
Then you have a caller who names one of the objects. One person from the group has to find the object in the sock without looking. The first person to find it wins a point for their team. The sock then gets passed to the next person in the group.
