Have you got space in the freezer? If so you could prep, blanch and freeze it? Then it will definitely still be okay, and there’s less to do on Christmas Day too!

PestorPeston · 18/12/2022 16:58

Have a Baileys, leave him in charge.

MintJulia · 18/12/2022 17:06

Make sure he knows what he wants to do with each - roast potatoes, roast parsnips, sprouts with bacon, and maple glazed carrots.

Has he got whatever extra bits he needs - fat, glaze, bacon bits etc?
Are the roast potatoes going in the same roasting pan as the bird or will he need a different pan? Does he realise that?

superdupernova · 18/12/2022 17:11

We keep all our veg in our cold conservatory. The root veg and sprouts last just fine (but I take them out of any plastic). For things like broccoli we buy them a day or two before because they don't last otherwise.

MrsR87 · 18/12/2022 17:12

Where has he bought it from? That makes a huge difference to longevity.

bizzywiththefizzy · 18/12/2022 17:16

I was just going to say take them out of the plastic and put them in hessian shopping bag or similar .

Thighdentitycrisis · 18/12/2022 17:19

Root veg should be fine if it was good quality and fresh when bought.

YomAsalYomBasal · 18/12/2022 17:31

Depends where from. If from Lidl it'll be mush tomorrow anyway, if from Waitrose it will be fine.

Yabadooo · 18/12/2022 17:48

Aldi!

All of that will be completely fine.

Better your storage than their storage.

Mine is coming tomorrow.

bigbluebus · 18/12/2022 17:53

Supermarket veg may not last. I should imagine your carrots and parsnips will be quite bendy by Christmas day. Potatoes should be ok. Sprout might be going brown if they're anything like Lidl's. Veg from a decent greengrocer definitely would keep that long in cold temperatures. I only shop once a week and keep my veg in the fridge and that's my experience of supermarket veg.
As someone else suggested, prep your veg now and freeze it. That'll save time on Christmas day too.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 18/12/2022 17:56

I think you'll be fine. We get shopping every fortnight and veg keeps just fine if cold.

Hmm You've just persuaded me to get my veg from the farm shop this year . It's closer than the local Sainsbury's anyway and I would prefer to get a sprout tree that lasts for a couple of meals . We like sprouts in our house . I do keep them in our freezing cold garage though .

Tigerstripe20 · 18/12/2022 18:03

As mentioned up thread, prep it all, blanch and freeze it will be fine.
even if left in a cold place it will ( except for the potatoes) be less than fresh and possibly a bit limp.
I bought ours yesterday from a greengrocer and will be prepping, blanching a freezing tonight.

PestorPeston · 18/12/2022 18:04

Is he also responsible for cooking the vegetables?

JustATShirtInTheKitchen · 18/12/2022 18:05

Why has he bought it so early? I’ve found Aldi fruit and veg is crap, never keeps.

Yabadooo · 18/12/2022 18:10

Yes he is going to cook and i have no idea why do early . It doesnt look rhat lovely now to be honest and we have guest s due . He says just leave it to me . Should i ?!

Ours does. Better than Sainsbury’s. Ours is in the outhouse.

needastrongoneagain · 18/12/2022 18:18

It'll be fine in the shed! I've had some parsnips and tons of various squash in the garage for weeks. Plus potatoes, all still fresh as fresh can be!

pelargoniums · 18/12/2022 18:44

It’ll be fine! And if parsnips/carrots/etc go slightly floppy it just saves anyone parboiling before roasting them.

PestorPeston · 18/12/2022 18:48

Honestly I would leave him to it.

I might also have three packets of raw jumbo prawns in the freezer additionally frozen peas and broad beans. Plus a tin of artichoke hearts and some quinoa in the cupboard. Plan B would exist but I would be disappointed to use it.

He is quite grown up and you need him to become competent before retirement. Spending your DH's retirement wanting to kill them is not the way to go.

If he fecks up, next year re-invite the same people and let them see the improvement.

Glitterandcard · 18/12/2022 19:01

If I put fresh veg in my shed, even in plastic, they’d be mouse food by Christmas Day. Anything remotely edible would be in a metal tin or ideally somewhere else.

Mouse issues aside, carrots and sprouts etc will easily keep for a week, stop stressing. It’s vegetables, he can easily buy more on the 23/24th if they go off. He’s in charge so let him be.

DilemmaDelilah · 18/12/2022 19:41

@superdupernova I have found that if you keep your broccoli stalk in water, and the whole lot in a cold place (we use the fridge) it lasts quite a long time. Twice as long as if it isn't in water. Only the stalk, mind you.
