Very simple cooked ham recipe for Xmas?

I've never cooked one before.
I'm thinking about boiling it the day before and roasting it on Xmas morning.
Any suggestions for a simple recipe?

Simmer it in water. Some use a mixture of half water, half apple juice. I don't.

Whilst it's still hot, mix together two tablespoons of marmalade and two teaspoons of English mustard and smother this all over the meat. Put it back in the oven for fifteen minutes so it glazes.

If you have a slow cooker, chop an apple up and put it in the bottom with the joint on top and put on low for seven hours. Absolutely succulent and the juice runs into the apples and makes the most amazing apple sauce to go with it.

I cook mine in the slow cooker (some people use coke but I just use water)

Then I spread marmalade on it and brown the skin

Slow cooker covered in either cola or cider.

I finish in oven after covering in a mix of honey and mustard.

Those who cook it in the slow cooker, can you help with timings?

I’ve got a 2 kilo unsmoked gammon joint that I was going to slow cook with some cider for 6 hours on medium (during the night Xmas eve) then on Xmas day morning glaze with apricot jam and pop in the oven with the turkey & take out 1.5 hours before serving

does this sound right?! I’ve never cooked a gammon before

I put mine in the slowcooker on the morning of xmas eve. Simmered in cider with a rough chopped onion, bay leaf and peppercorns. You could pop in some chopped carrot if you like. Let it cook on medium for 6hrs. If you're doing it on the hob it'll only need 90-120 minutes.

Then let it cool in the liquid - this will keep it moist. Once cooled, keep in the fridge (still covered in the liquid) until needed.

On the day, remove the skin (but not the fat), score and stud with a few cloves and paint over a glaze - I use a mix of mustard and honey, or you can use marmalade as per PP. Roast in a hot oven for 20-30 minutes until the glaze just starts to caramalize.

Look at the Hairy Biker's recipe for inspiration.

I boil. Then take out and smother in honey and mustard. (Could use anything sweet... marmalade, pineapple, whatever,) cover in foil and put it in the oven. I find minimal faff works best as it's such a nice meat already.

@superstar84 - see above (cross-posted).
I'd do it two days before you need it. Let it cool in the liquid before roasting - it them draws some of the liquid back into the meat and it's deliciously moist.

Thanks, am I right to think I can leave it out the oven just like we do with the turkey after it’s glazed so I’ve got room in the oven?

GuidoTheKillerPimp · 18/12/2022 16:13

Boil it in cherry coke. Take the rind off, score the skin, stud it with cloves. Cherry jam and smoked paprika glaze. Stolen from nigella

Following with interest for ideas. I normally boil in coke on Xmas eve and then roast on Christmas morning with whatever glaze I can pull together out the cupboard!!!

Glaze the ham once the turkey is in the oven. It can wait out for a bit. Then put the ham in the oven once the turkey comes out to rest. It only needs 20-30 minutes to seal the glaze and get a bit of caramelization going.

I boil in water with any or all of the following- depending what I have lying about:
1/2- 1 onion roughly chopped, garlic glove in half, whole peppercorns, bay leaf and for a Christmas ham- I add some mixed spice to the water.

I then mix either mustard powder or Dijon mustard, mixed spice with any marmalade, fruity chutney or jam I have before baking till the jam goes golden.

In the summer I had a glut of courgettes so have jars of ginger and marrow jam to use up. sounds odd but its delicious and goes well on the ham.

shma · 18/12/2022 16:27

Don't overcomplicate it, it's actually really easy.

Simmer for 45 minutes per kg. Rest in fridge. Bake at 200 for half an hour to brown the outside.

If you want to keep it simple just do bay in the water, and honey for the glaze.

MrsCarson · 18/12/2022 16:28

Easiest and nicest I now do is Slow cooker the day before.
Handful of brown sugar in a pile on the bottom of the slow cooker, ham on top, handful of sugar on top and a drizzle of golden syrup. Slow cook all day 8 hours, done.
Don't add any liquid, there will be little bit on the bottom when it's cooked though.
