Is something like buckaroo to young for a three yr old?
He gets very agitated if things don't go his way so I'm not sure if he would just cry if the donkey bucked all the stuff off on his go.

Any other game suggestions that work for your 3yr old but are fun for you too?

Memory games like Shopping List (made by Orchard Games) or matching pairs are good at that age.

Afolnerd · 15/12/2022 11:33

Look at peaceable kingdom games. There are lots on Amazon. They are collaborative games so you all either win or lose together.
we have lots. The dinosaur one is great for a 3 year old.

I've got our almost 3 year old pop up pirate for Christmas to play in this way. I won't make it about anybody winning/losing but more about "who is the pirate going to jump out on??"

I saw one like that like an Xmas eve list or something and I thought I bought it but can't find it.
I did buy snowman snap!

I did buy a bingo game but I was more looking for a sort of substantial game rather than cards type thing.

Yes pop up pirate but DH wondered if ds would be patient enough for it but I think he would.

Little Bug Bingo, Gruffalo Deep Dark Wood and Kerplunk

usernotfound0000 · 15/12/2022 11:57

The orchard games are really good. At 3, mine liked knickerbocker glory, shopping list, 3 little pigs, party party party and pigs in pants

RewildingAmbridge · 15/12/2022 12:03

DS has just turned 4 but he loves buckaroo and pop up pirate, snakes and ladders and the orchard games especially dirty dinosaurs. We've also got him my first castle panic for Christmas, but DH and I play a lot of table top games.

RewildingAmbridge · 15/12/2022 12:04

Oh we tried operation but it was too difficult for him, he enjoys it though

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/12/2022 12:08

DS used to like Hungry Hungry Hippies at that age.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/12/2022 12:09

Also he was surprisingly good at Jenga, and particularly enjoyed bellowing JENGAAAA! when the tower finally toppled.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 15/12/2022 12:13

Oh great thanks for all the suggestions!

Yes I like operation but I know it will be too difficult for Ds for now.

I don't think my 3yo would enjoy Buckaroo. He likes snap, Dobble, Downfall, Orchard games especially the spider one and he's getting Kerplunk and Hungry Hippos for Christmas. I also liked the look of an ELC post box game but didn't buy it.

Andsoforth · 15/12/2022 12:25

Monopoly junior is surprisingly good as an adult player. Maybe more suited to a4-5 year old but one up bear in mind for next year.

At 3 the adults really do need to be able to accommodate a child’s abilities, including strategically letting them win if necessary. I’m reading between the lines and guessing that maybe your dh isn’t quite up to playing with toddlers? I’d hold off for another year if that’s the case because it’s hard to get family games back on track if they get off to a bad start.

PandaG · 15/12/2022 12:28

I think that pretty much all games that are suitable for 3 year olds are tedious for adults. Not played a cooperative game suitable for that age though. However, I spent a lot of time willingly playing orchard games - shopping list, ladybird game, dinosaurs etc with my kids and then nieces and nephews, because getting enjoyment from board games when small is so good for learning patience, turn taking, resilience etc. Then as they get older the board games you can play start to become so much more enjoyable for everyone.

We own well over 100 board games and our now adult children regularly play with us, but that all started with hours of shopping list and the ladybird game!

DD3 loves loads of the Orchard Games but got Hungry Hungry Hippos for her birthday and really enjoys playing it (great for counting up the balls at the end too)

We've got Buckaroo and Pop Up Pirate for her Christmas. She played Buckaroo on holiday and was fine with it, think the box says its 4+ but it's genuinely fine for her (she was never alone with the small parts although I think she is past the risky time for shoving things up noses etc)

Justme10 · 15/12/2022 12:32

My son really liked the we are going on a bear hunt board game at that age and shark bite was a big hit as well.

quietnightmare · 15/12/2022 12:34

Mine were good at operation and loved the beeping noise

quietnightmare · 15/12/2022 12:34

Frustration
Twister
Limbo

We love a board game and bought some when dd was around 3, now ds is 3 he is enjoying them too!
orchard or haba have some lovely games for young children. We have animal upon animal (stacking game), the little orchard (dice rolling and matching pairs), unicorn glitterluck (dice game but v simple and my dd loved it). There is a monkey one too, the name escapes me but it's an orchard one.
Ds also likes kerplunk and crocodile dentist.

Also tried a few more complex games as me and dh are big board gamers, things like the PJ masks one where you 'battle' Romeo.

PawPrintsInMyPansies · 15/12/2022 12:52

My DD loved Elefun at that age. Tbh, so did I!

GiltEdges · 15/12/2022 12:56

Jenga?

Needmorelego · 15/12/2022 15:50

I've just remember that Build a Beetle was one we played a lot.
