GETTING THERE

Up until two years ago, going top visit relatives over christmas wasn't a problem as I had a car (at a pinch I was even able to collect said relative), but sincce I had to sell my car at the start of the pandemic going anywhere for Christmas dinner has been a problem because of lack of public transport on that day. We've had to cpmpromise and arrance a delayed Christmas for a day when the public transport is up and running.

This year I've been invited to Christmas dinner on 25th at my daughter's; she lives in a different city and her partner, who does the Christmas dinner, is a superb cook, so whilst i would be looking forward to the occasion the big problem is how to get there . Daughter and her partner don't drive, there's no buses or trains running on December 25th and a taxi to daughter's house would cost £90 each way . Yes that's right - ninety punds ech way !

If I can't sort out transport to and fro on Christmas day then it looks like i might have to spend Christmas alone. I have plenty of food in, my flat is nice and warm and I can watch whatever I like on TV but of course I will miss seeing my daughter on Dec 25th. My elderly Mum knows I don't have transport so has made arrangements to go to her friend on Dec 25th.

Am now thinking of looking into whether there's any organised Christmas lunches anywhere locally for people who would otherwise be on their own.

Can you not go to your daughter a day or two before and then go home 26/27th?

Staying overnight isn't an option because I have pets at home (2 cats and a dog) that can't be left overnight.

Rent a car?

I sold my car in June of 2020 and haven't driven at all since then. Woud be a bit uncertain about getting behind the wheel again after so long.

Can't the cats look after themselves for one night, and the dog go with you?

Or rent a car. Driving is a valuable skill, you shouldn't risk losing it. Christmas Day is the quietest on the roads, and the weather is forecast to be 10 degrees and dry in the UK so no weather problems.
