She does loads with our kids for us,
Helps with childcare 3-4x a week, puts home cooked casseroles in our fridge on a weekly basis. I have no idea what to get her.

She's very practical and active. Runs a business. Wouldn't be into cashmere scarves etc but likewise I find buying theatre tickets so difficult because they are difficult to pin down with the business. Am seriously struggling!

A hotel voucher possibly, but I feel it's thoughtless and they love their motorhome! Help!!!

Could you get a little luxury item for motor home? Speaker.... Or maybe make a nice little album thanking her specifically for things you appreciate.

mdh2020 · 13/12/2022 21:58

Voucher for afternoon tea
Luxurious throw for motor home
Spa day
Time with you - do something together

Mum5net · 13/12/2022 22:01

A suitcase that fits as cabin baggage on easyJet or budget airline… and inside voucher for flights with just you on your own

RosesAndHellebores · 13/12/2022 22:02

.

paintitallover · 13/12/2022 22:06

Would she like a high quality jumper?

RosesAndHellebores · 13/12/2022 22:08

Sorry I had to look up the website so I marked my place. If they love their motor home and take it abroad, do they have an emovis toll tab. Just Google.

Willowkins · 13/12/2022 22:10

I think you get to an age where you don't need more stuff. What you want are experiences. Is she nearby? Could you go to see her favourite film with her? Is there something she's always wanted to do? Maybe CBT (motorbike lessons)?

Ragwort · 13/12/2022 22:18

I agree with others ... I am your DM's age and there is nothing I want or need ... my life and home is full of nice 'stuff' and I just don't have room for anything else. Personally I appreciate a 'charity gift' although I know not everyone likes them. But honestly, I don't want my adult DC spending their money on me ... if she is providing childcare and home cooked food for you she obviously knows she is in a much better financial position than you and wouldn't want you to buy her anything. My own DM is 90 ... we long since gave up buying gifts for each other but go out for a nice meal, day out, theatre or similar.

frustratedashell · 13/12/2022 22:30

I'm 62 and would love a voucher for afternoon tea somewhere nice

Novemberhater · 13/12/2022 22:36

I'm in the older age group.

Cream tea voucher
A night in a luxury hotel (so comfortable after a camper van)
Hairdressing voucher
Gorgeous jumper
Gin
Champagne
Posh chocolate
Voucher for a session with a makeup artist
Framed photo of my children

Ban · 13/12/2022 22:37

I'm a bit younger than your mum, but I don't want presents either.

For my birthday I got a days work from my son, which I used to help him move furniture around and mow the lawn.

He would do these things for me anyway, but I would never ask as he has his own life. But getting a day's work as a birthday present let me "use" him ... guilt free!!

It was GREAT!!

I would love something like this for Xmas.

She sounds really lovely

what about vouchers for her hair salon or beautician ?

a nice trip would be great too

Toomanysleepycats · 13/12/2022 22:43

What about a nice indoor plant or a plant for her garden. A couple of really lovely champagne glasses. A hobby lamp/light (I need more light to see to knit), AirPods, fancy gin.

A subscription to audible/magazines etc./Spotify/Netflix/prime.

junebirthdaygirl · 13/12/2022 22:44

Similar age to your mum
I love flowers and getting some delived regularly would be lovely.
Also large pots for my garden/ gardening vouchers
Hairdresser voucher for my own salon
Cards from the gdc with their own pictures and stories.

snowspider · 13/12/2022 22:45

I am that age. I would love a hand written card/letter just saying what I meant to you, sounds naff but my daughter did something like this when I was feeling low but had been doing stuff for her too and I have kept it. It just had her feelings about our relationship in it. Not too soppy sentimental or anything just something that she would have struggled to say face to face. Also I love Christmas tree decorations so one or two of those especially nice glass etc.

determinedtomakethiswork · 13/12/2022 22:51

@Ban I love the idea of a day's work! That is a really brilliant present.

@Ban I love the idea of a day's work! That is a really brilliant present.

It was! I'm a single parent with 2 of his siblings still at home. So it was just so great.

Change a lightbulb, fix my electric blanket, move furniture. Etc. Most stuff I CAN do (well maybe not the electric blanket) but so lovely to someone else to come help.

Like I said he would have done it anyway if I'd asked, but I don't want to waste his weekend on shit stuff. So it was amazing to be able to book a Saturday for him to come down and do the odd jobs! :)

Powerplant · 13/12/2022 22:56

I’m the same age as your mum and love our campervan. There’s nothing I need or want for Christmas but my children have previously bought theatre and cinema tickets and we’ve had a lovely evening all together. Maybe something for the motor home or an audible subscription - which is something I might suggest. She sounds lovely btw. Just thought how about a beauty voucher?

YaWeeSkitter · 13/12/2022 22:57

Im a similar age to your Mum and I love spending time with my adult DC with no GDC around. Its a rare event and usually I love watching the GDC and listening to their chat but occasionally just adults enjoying each others company is lovely.

So a day out with some mooching and a bit of Lunch would be an excellent gift.

If you have time I also love the idea of a day of work. I can certainly think of lots of little things I could get my DC to do.

paintitallover · 13/12/2022 23:01

I've been given a day /8 hours of jobs by my ds, too. He cleared the shed out for me, reorganised it, and put hooks up.

paintitallover · 13/12/2022 23:01

Sorry, not finished. It was a great and memorable gift.

determinedtomakethiswork · 13/12/2022 23:05

I can think of so many things for my children to do that I doubt they will ever offer a day of work!

determinedtomakethiswork · 13/12/2022 23:07

@ban did he have constant cups of tea and biscuits, like a regular worker? What time did he work till? It's making me really laugh thinking of my kids offering this and then bitterly regretting it.

Ban · 13/12/2022 23:27

@determinedtomakethiswork He came at about 10am and left about 5pm. I made lunch. His wife sat in the garden with me.

Honestly it was one of the best presents.

He's my eldest so no moaning or regret. The two teenagers still at home? Well I'd hate to imagine what a day's work would like from them! I envisage loads of eye rolling and sighing though!

I would just love to sit down and watch a film with them all one evening. That would be a lovely present! Although the film would have to be my choice.

The arguments about what to watch means that I can't remember the last time we all sat together to watch a film.

Time! Your Time is the best present you can give an older mum! I reckon!
