Anyone any good ideas for a very outdoor-sy man aged 68? Are there any amazing thermals I should know about? Great brands, country gent type things? He has sheep, drives a pick-up and a tractor. Did like Clarkson's farm, in case that inspires any ideas!!

He doesn't read, is diabetic, not into sport or food and buys everything he wants himself.

Hmmm...

An outdoorsy hat

Alexandernevermind · 13/12/2022 15:37

I've got a family full of these.
A few ideas:
Nice walking stick, good county style tie, body warmer, decent gloves, hip flask or decent thermos, binoculars, clay pigeon shooting lessons, heavy duty hand and face creams, hat and scarf sets.

Catspyjamas17 · 13/12/2022 15:37

A nice hip flask and single malt whisky.

A tweed cap or deerstalker.

A Barbour beanie hat

My FIL is like this, and we normally get him pub meal vouchers (for a nice pub/restaurant nearby that he likes.)

We've bought him shirts before, exactly the same sort (those cream country ones with the thin, graph paper style checks) and they sit unworn. He's so difficult to buy for!

My Dad, who was a similar country type quite liked a decent fleece, or new waterproof, or boots for when he was out walking the dogs etc.

The same sort as he wears...

Heated gilet or hat?
They do heated gloves but most of them seem to be made for skiing & are too big to use your hands when you have them on.
Just make sure you get one that includes the battery bank or you need to get one of those too.
If he's out for longer than 4 hours at a time, they normally only last about that long, so spare battery bank means you can get a full 8 hours.

Boot scraper (nice one)
Or boot store.

Kit for cleaning wellies.

Decent pen knife (but he probably already has one)
Fisher space pen - the ones that will write on damp surfaces, upside down etc.., so you can use them anywhere.

Stanley knife? My uncle is also a farmer and that's about all he is interested in. I've got him one to clip on his belt. My DP has got my dad one too (although slightly different style)

Kalebs book? It has lots of pictures and would be relatable, and looks and easy read.

I got my dad gloves which are working gloves, but insulated. Loves them for the early morning feeding and dog walking

Hat with head torch and or Bluetooth speakers. Dad getting one this year that has both, I got a head torch only one for valentines day last year. Love it!

New waterproof leggings/wellies. Both are on my list this year. If your dad is anything like mine, goes through wellies a few times a year, so never go wrong. Got Dunlop steelies from screwfix for about £20 this year

Heavy shirt? We don't really do brands, cause they always rip and snag on things anyway so not much point paying a fortune.

Something for the sheep/working outside. Does he need more baling twine? I know it isn't expensive, or very festive, but sometimes farmer prefer the practical gifts they can get use out of...

Hope some of those ideas are useful.

How about a gift card for Mole Valley/Mole online? Not that imaginative maybe, but he might appreciate being able to choose something useful. Or a subscription to Farmers Weekly?

I picked a farming colleague in last year's work Secret Santa and got her a beanie hat with built-in LED light which was well-received, similar to this www.amazon.co.uk/Beanie-Rechargeable-Perfect-Unisex-Christmas/dp/B09J2MR812/ref=sr_1_10?crid=2FSAL0M9IH0OS&keywords=beanie+hat+with+light+rechargeable&qid=1670947137&sprefix=beanie+hat%2Caps%2C92&sr=8-10

A bloody good penknife is always good. Thick decent clothes - Alan Paine, schoffel, chameau etc. good hat and gloves etc. if he shoots a priest or hipflask etc. cartridge bags

Saz12 · 13/12/2022 17:25

Fly fishing lessons? If he doesn’t already go.
Headtorch
Stockmans diary?
Subscription to Farmers Weekly, Shooting Times, Modern Tractor, Tractor fanciers weekly, Top Tup (OK I’m making those up) etc?
Voucher for binding service for all his back copies of the above? (Do they still do that?)
Antique barometer?
Modern weatherstation?
Dry stone walling course?
Hedge laying course?
Chainsaw trousers /glove?
