How many presents do you buy for children

Have got 4 and 6 year old 15 presents each (but some are small like lip gloss or a slinky) and a Christmas eve box.

Is that about normal?

My children have 7 each (1 is from Santa) plus a Christmas Eve box and a couple of stocking fillers.

Each DS will have

6 under the tree (1 main, the others are small)
8 in the stocking (including chocolate and sweets)
3 from family

Its not a lot but they will love each item and in the past 2 years we've drastically cut down on our possessions and all feel better for it.

Interesting you say 17 presents is not enough, that is a lot.

cherriegarcia · 13/12/2022 17:32

I think there is such a thing as kids just getting overwhelmed and not appreciating the presents.

Most kids once they've opened 10-15 presents are not as interested, so I wouldn't get more than that.

Quality not quantity.

Daffodilsinbloom37 · 13/12/2022 17:42

Also have four and six year olds and they have about 9 presents each (ranging from a bike to a book, but apart from the bike, nothing hugely expensive), then about the same number of stocking fillers (ranging from things like the Bluey granny set and a small Lego friends set to a bath bomb and chocolate santa).

Went a bit overboard last year damn twitch and they probably had another 5 each of main presents and 5 more stocking fillers so told them this year that as they were getting bikes, to only expect a few other presents... Probably went more overboard than what I was planning but feels about right!

ToThineOwnSelfBe · 13/12/2022 17:48

It's never the same amount of gifts year-to-year, but we spend about the same on both kids. If they get a big (as in high-cost) present, they will usually get fewer other gifts. Sometimes years they get more, but they're all low-middle cost gifts. I'm not sure there's an average. Surely it's just what can one get for the money you want/can spend, right?

I find as they get older they want fewer, higher-cost gifts. But stockings are always the same: "fancy" socks and pants (ones with tv characters when they are young, designer ones when they are older), a book, a game and some kind of fun sweets (more difficult now that DS1 has braces).

17caterpillars1mouse · 13/12/2022 18:38

2 DDs 6 and 4

Both have 11 tree presents (some big like a Lego friends sets or a doll, some small like an umbrella or colouring book)

And 13 small presents each to fit in their stockings.

Bournetilly · 13/12/2022 19:03

Including the stocking about 35.
My mum always used to get us 50 each and I know it’s not all about the presents but for children the presents are one of the most exciting parts, so they will get a lot whilst they are young.

NotAnotherCrisis · 13/12/2022 19:08

Cutting down each year as my DC really aren't interested (SEN). I'm intrigued by this thread though and just how many presents some children get, but then I remember being a child and having millions of presents under the tree too.

Mine get about 4 presents (1 of which is main one from Father Christmas) each plus small stocking. They then get gifts from family.

Blessedbethefruitz · 13/12/2022 19:12

Mine (almost 1 and almost 4) have 9-15 each plus cheap normal size stocking (largest items in there are lego or duplo poylbags). 1 main thing from father Christmas. I feel it's too much but I couldn't stop myself after an awful year. Nothing pricey except kindle fires on black friday and a joint switch for dp and ds, they love to play Mario together! Not much extended family so this will be most of what they get.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 13/12/2022 19:15

3 each under the tree. Plus 1 to share.
8/9 in the stocking.

Plus however many their dad and the wider family get them.

AnyRandomName · 13/12/2022 19:21

2 each from us (circa £100) and some stocking bits which are things they need and a book.

They will get gifts from grandparents, god parents and an uncle.

That's more than enough in our book tbh. They get overwhelmed

Privatestate1 · 13/12/2022 19:24

Mine are 4 and 1. They will get 4 big things each under the tree (E.g a big Lol doll, a little live pets mama surprise) plus 2 things to share (bath toys), and in the stocking 4 year old will have around 10 small things ranging from a choc santa to a new water bottle, cosy socks, little nail polishes. 1 year old less as only a baby. On Xmas eve they get a pile of Xmas books to share, 4 year old will get some Xmas PJs and some chocolates to hang on the tree. It doesn’t sound like a lot compared to others in this thread so wonder if I’m being mean as we could afford more! However I’ve also spend a lot of money on ‘experiences’ over Xmas, so an attraction with lights, a train ride to see Santa and panto tickets. They also have winter birthdays and get presents throughout the year 🤷‍♀️.

Yamaya · 13/12/2022 20:40

OK, I am starting to feel better about it. Plus I found my list from last year and they had 14 each so will stick to that and not buy any more. Thanks everyone. Interesting to hear how much it varies.

but they last all year not one day, a kid doesnt have to be taken with and play with everything on xmas day.

My DD got something last year that she only took too 2 weeks ago, she loves it now and has played with it everyday since 'rediscoving' it.

That's fair enough, although I guess I'd say why get them all at Christmas in that case? Presumably there are also presents which are bought and never see the light of day.

It seems kind of pointless for children to have so much at once that they can't appreciate and enjoy it. To me it feels like it just encourages the kind of materialism/ consumerism that we need to try and move away from as a society.

If they have small gifts through the year instead then they will be more appreciated and likely to be appropriate for them at the time.

Cherryana · 14/12/2022 04:37

4 each - A book, an arsenal top, a toblerone plus a £30 gift card from sports direct for the oldest and a £30 Lego set for the youngest.

HowCanIPayItForward · 14/12/2022 06:04

Father Christmas brings 10 each, usually one £20-30 one and the rest smaller bits.

Then they get a main present plus 1 or 2 smaller ones under the tree from us.

We go for quality over quantity, I can't bear stuff that breaks quickly or is a 5 minute wonder, such a waste.

MaverickSnoopy · 14/12/2022 06:24

Mine have 12 under the tree and 15 I'm their stocking. I used to do more but it felt a bit meaningless and they were just opening things that were fillers and weren't appreciated in the same way as the really exciting things. So I've been cutting down 1 a year and very carefully selecting what I buy. It went down incredibly well last year and they loved what they got.

Sugarfree23 · 14/12/2022 06:54

Mine will have stockings with about 6/7 little bits bath bombs, chocolate coins, pencils, and magazine.

Main present, having second thoughts about LOs mainly because it's a hand-me down from a friend who's kid knows where their old scooter is going. The whole idea of getting one new to the house and not handing one down from big sister was so it appeared new to LO.

They'll have 7 other things from us, toys, lego, toiletries, computer games, selection boxes, books,

4 things from family.

And at that I'm totally out of ideas. I can't work out how people manage to come up with huge lists of stuff for kids.

LustigLustig · 14/12/2022 07:12

I try to limit it to three things they will really love (mine are older, teens now, so those things are tech, clothes, books)

Then 10 things in the stocking - chocolate, sweets, stationery, makeup, shower/bath stuff, and one small toy or game or gadget.

I find setting a limit helps me focus and think more carefully about what to get - I see lots of things they would like, but don’t want to fill the house with things that will be appreciated in the moment but not really get used.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 14/12/2022 07:14

DS(13) has 11 this year plus an average sized stocking. I’ve actually spent less than usual this year as we go for quality over quantity and he already has all the big ticket items that have lasted well. He only gets gifts my parents, DH’s parents, my sister and one of my brothers so I guess it depends on who else buys for them.

WomanhoodIsABirthright · 14/12/2022 07:42

Helpmesortit · 13/12/2022 14:31

My dc have 3 each from Santa and 28 each from us.These vary from big to small gifts. Like Lego sets etc or hair clips etc

93 presents? For 3 children?

Bit excessive, no?

WomanhoodIsABirthright · 14/12/2022 07:48

I dontbser the point in giving 200 presents of tat for numbers sake.

That woman in the paper that gives her kids 500 presents each and then goes on whether it enough is just idiotic imo.
