Help! Last minute late present for nearly 10 yo DS

Unbelievably foolishly DH and I were so pleased with ourselves for having thought of a good main present for DS we didn’t actually order it in time. It’s a mini potters wheel but it’s coming from China and due between 21st and 30th. It’s DS’s 10th birthday in February so if the wheel arrives late it can be his bday present but now I’m left with no plan for his main Christmas present.

Last year he had an instax camera which went down well. He already has a bike and a scooter, a laptop that he plays games on, a football goal in the garden. He used to be really into Lego but has gone off that in the last year. I’ve thought of random things like a waffle maker or a drone but I feel like they’ll just get used once and then sit gathering dust. He sister has roller skates and a skateboard which he could used if he wanted to but he’s never shown any interest.

Anything you’ve got your kids of a similar age that has been well received? He never writes a list or particularly has any suggestions. The only things he has mentioned are the potters wheel and a telescope (which grandparents have already got).

Will he be interested in learning an instrument? dd is getting a guitar for xmas.

BergamotandLime · 13/12/2022 10:32

A ukulele - great fun to learn!

RichInBunlyGoodness · 13/12/2022 10:35

That would have been a good shout but he already plays the ukulele!

In fact I was just silently reflecting this morning whilst listening to him strum Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer that after several years of lessons all his songs still sound unrecognisable!

Trip to an observatory or space museum?

ChristmasTidyings · 13/12/2022 10:51

Darts board? Decathlon do a soft, electronic one.

RichInBunlyGoodness · 13/12/2022 10:59

School has recently done a space port trip which I think it what sparked the telescope talk but might look into whether there’s an observatory around here.

Dart board isn’t a bad idea. He has a kids archery thing in the garden which he quite likes.

After the musical instrument idea I’m just looking at melodicas. Saw one on the TKSST gift guide here which I would recommend as it has lots of unusual stuff on.

Science stuff? E.g. telescope, microscope, with accessories. Chemistry set.

Radio controlled car or aeroplane?

If he's into animals, day Falconry training or similar

To tie in to the potters wheel, a short pottery course?

summergone · 13/12/2022 11:29

Is he into football ?

Redebs · 13/12/2022 11:33

A hand held microscope. I got a usb one and a wireless one this year and they have been brilliant fun for myself and grandkids.

Following PP's suggestion, maybe:

(Last posting date tomorrow, and they've got 10% off)

STEAM Exploration Kit?

NASA Space Exploration Kit?

TheFauxFighters · 13/12/2022 11:47

Aj, just spotted you've already got that covered via TKSST!
What a great resource, thanks for flagging that up, OP.

ChristmasTidyings · 13/12/2022 11:47

@Redebs do you have a link?

neonleopard · 13/12/2022 12:00

I've got my DS 10 a kindle (the reading sort), he liked the idea of being able to read in the dark at bedtime. Also got him some more grown up art supplies. And some trendy Nike trainers (which I suspect he may not really care about!).
Anything for his room? Lava lamp, plasma ball, LED lights, beanbag chair?
Headphones for laptop - either over head or apple in ear style ones?
If outdoorsy - penknife?
Quite like the idea of a den building kit for mine (the crazy forts one on Amazon had best reviews).

RichInBunlyGoodness · 13/12/2022 16:04

@summergone he’s not into football really, a kick about in the garden but that’s about it.

Thanks for all the ideas, some good stuff to look at. Think I might have to let go of the idea of a ‘main’ present and just get a few different things he might like.

@ChristmasTidyings I got one sold by a firm called Cainda, sold on Amazon.
I actually bought a wired usb one that was great (it plugged straight into my microusb on phone). I then went onto their website and noticed they were offering a free stand. Just had to email them.
I thought it was too good to be true, but they did actually send me a free, solid stand in a zip-up hard case.
There was a bit on their website about testing products for them, which I offered to do and they actually gave me a free wireless rechargeable one through the post!
I don't know if the offer is still there, but I did have a lot of fun with both microscopes this summer. My grandkids loved it and we got fantastic pictures of plants, seeds and creepy-crawlies.

I'm not sure if mumsnet will let me post a link. I definitely don't get anything for recommending them!
