And also Twilight. Adult in their twenties who I know has enjoyed those books previously :)

Anyone know of anything similar they might enjoy?

Rivers of London series?
I'm just re reading the dark is rising series for the umpteenth time. Book two is super christmassy and atmospheric.

Pictograph · 13/12/2022 03:44

His Dark Materials series

PlantsAndSpaniels · 13/12/2022 04:30

If they like a bit of smut, a court of thorns and roses is brilliant. Fantasy romance at its best.
If just fantasy, a throne of glass series or the cruel Prince series are both highly rated.

The Shadowhunter series by Cassandra Clare.

Thanks all!

Scholomance series by Naomi Novik, last book just out a few months ago.

SummerLightning · 13/12/2022 07:38

My adult friend (with no kids) and I really like the morrigan crow books. If anything they are aimed at slightly younger age than Harry potter though!

Annexlife · 13/12/2022 07:38

Sarah J Mass, 100%. Or more old school but Guy Gabriel Kay.

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 13/12/2022 07:42

A discovery of witches - Deborah Harkness
Rivers of London - Ben Aarronavitch (I may have the surname a bit wrong but it definitely starts with A!)

I know I've read more that would fit this perfectly but my kinds gone blank! If they come to me, I'll be back!

Followtheyellowsicktoad · 13/12/2022 07:46

The Cormoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith, also known as J K Rowling.

Even if pure crime isn’t her taste they’re really well written and gallop you along.

EllieQ · 13/12/2022 07:48

Agree with the River of London series suggestion.

I haven’t read the Scholomance series by Naomi Novik yet, but it had good reviews - it’s set in a magical school, but is not a children’s/ YA series. Her other books (Uprooted and Spinning Silver) are good too - both loosely based on fairy tales.

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 13/12/2022 07:53

Another vote for the Rivers of London series.

Also Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, which is basically dark Harry Potter for grown ups!

ChillyB · 13/12/2022 13:48

They might like a MinaLima copy of Harry Potter - they are beautifully illustrated: minalima.com/product/harry-potter-and-the-philosophers-stone-signed-copy/

The Shadowhunter series by Cassandra Clare.

Yes this!!

Unbridezilla · 13/12/2022 14:36

I was also going to say A Discovery of witches. It's basically grown up twilight, but with books the length of HP.

HappySonHappyMum · 13/12/2022 14:41

If they really love Harry Potter then you want this: The Magic of MinaLima: Celebrating the Graphic Design Studio Behind the Harry Potter & Fantastic Beasts Films. It contains all the artwork and designs from the Graphic Design studio that made the films look like they do. It's fascinating, beautiful and I can't put it down.

BamBamBilla · 13/12/2022 14:47

The Murderer's Ape, The False Rose & The Legend of Sally Jones. - Sequence of books about a gorilla's adventures with her friend The Chief sailing.

Stropalotopus83 · 13/12/2022 14:53

Seconding A Discovery of Witches trilogy (there is also a tv series) and the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas (frankly I would recommend anything written by her).

WeirdPookah · 13/12/2022 18:39

The Spooks Apprentice by Joseph Delaney, then there is a whole series after that, but it's the first.

TakingControl2023 · 13/12/2022 20:43

Thank you all!

I went for the Rivers of London series as it cropped up a few times 🙂 but will make a note of the others for future gift ideas.

Rivers of London series is great.

another suggestion for next time - the Dresden Files - another orphaned wizard called Harry, but a bit more grown up! He runs around Chicago solving magical crimes and dealing with vampires, werewolves, fairy queens, riding zombie dinosaurs etc.

TheGirlWhoLived · 14/12/2022 21:48

If she hasn’t read the Percy Jackson books then those are great. Basically you need to google “young adult fantasy fiction” and lots of good reads pages have been made! It’s my favourite genre 😌

mayaknew · 14/12/2022 21:51

Cecelia ahern wrote a dystopian future book called Flawed it was absolutely brilliant. It had a sequel which was also amazing but I can't remember what it's called.

mayaknew · 14/12/2022 21:53

Just looked it up it's called perfect

PhotoDad · 14/12/2022 21:56

Ursula le Guin's "Earthsea" series.
