Plants for presents

What plants make good gifts? I like plants but I’m a spider plant or cactus person!

I was thinking maybe air plants or something in a terrarium but worried my family of brilliant gardeners won’t like them. Any ideas?

I like to get something unkillable but impressive looking. Luckily "unkillable" is one of the categories at my local trendy plant shop! Things like monsteras and sansevierias always look good.

There are some amazing plant gifting companies online, even if you just look for inspiration. I have ordered a few and they can be huge and arrive really well packaged. Might be too late with deliveries for this year though?

I like bromeliads, they look striking and I was given one that lasted many years, didn't flower every year but so exciting when it did!

I'm a plant-y person and would steer clear of buying plants for an enthusiast, unless they've made specific request, as they may be overloaded. Instead buy a striking plant container, always a winner.

What houseplants have they already got? Im not a fan of air plants but love trailing ones like string of pearls. Have they got space for more plants? Crochet hangers are lovely for hanging by a window but wont suit everyones style. Could go for a Christmas cactus to be seasonal in a nice pot?

Finchgold · 13/12/2022 07:12

I’ll check those out , thanks.

They all gave lots of plants in their homes but I think will be happy with one more. I’ll maybe go visit a local plant shop for advice.

Houseplants or outdoor plants? As a gardener I would much prefer a voucher than a plant, especially from a non gardener. (I don't forget the year xdh got the kids to buy me a species honeysuckle when we had a field surrounded with hedges full of the stuff.)

Crocus or Sarah raven for outdoor plants.

What would you give someone who has asked for a large indoor plant? I'll get a nice pot but what should I put in it?

Large? A parlour palm or Areca or Kentia palm. Look stunning, easy to care for. Choose the former if you want a ‘wide’ plant, and the two latter if you want a more upright one.

I’m a plant person and while I have all my wish-list plants now, I’d still love a terrarium!

Quick reminder to check about animals in the house if getting plants, as some can be very poisonous e.g. Poinsettia can be lethal for cats! Same goes for cut flowers e.g. lillies

I’m looking for indoor plants. I want to give a gift not vouchers.

I definitely don’t want to kill the cats!

Unfortunately, there's quite a big list which includes indoor plants like:

Hyacinths
Rubber plants
Swiss Cheese plant

There's a list HERE that I think has most of them

antshouse · 13/12/2022 13:23

Are bulbs too boring?I Love hyacinth bowls, they grow quickly, smell amazing and can be put out in the garden after flowering to grow next year.
My daughters like amaryllis bulbs, but have never managed to keep them for the following year.
