Best days of Christmas

Does anyone else agree that the two weeks before Christmas are the best?! Decorated the house today, tree looks fab, everywhere looks cosy and twinkly. The anticipation of the actual day is way better !!

Absolutely not! For me, the 12 days of Christmas will always be the best. 12 days of play, feasting and merriment. Where no one knows what day it is and how many of days of fun are left. Turkey sandwiches and quality street reign high as food gods. Bed times don't exist.
That said, more and more, fewer and fewer people celebrate the proper 12 days (not through the individuals fault but also work/ society changes) and generally people want done with the whole affair after Boxing Day.

That's not at all to say the two weeks up to Christmas are bad! It's a wonderful time !The fresh decoration, the slow build up of presents beneath the tree, the quiet introduction of mince pies into the day to day, every day closer to Christmas being less and less formal. Looking forward to the children breaking up. Planning a panto/ show in advance of the big day. All brilliant!

Stompythedinosaur · 11/12/2022 23:30

The most exciting day is Christmas Eve, but my absolute favourite is boxing day - no stress, just lounge around eating leftovers and chocolate and playing with toys. Family gone home, just dp and the dc.

DinosaurOfFire · 11/12/2022 23:38

I agree @kittenkipping. Those are the best days! I prefer them for feeling Christmassy. We try not to need anything from the shop during that time, avoid the city centre, just spend time with the kids, eating too much chocolate and rich food, playing with Christmas toys, seeing family. The run up is just that to me, part of Advent and not actually Christmas time, which starts for us on Christmas Eve.

MrsBartlet · 12/12/2022 06:27

Completely agree with kittenkipping! The run up to Christmas is lovely but the best bit is actually Christmas - from Christmas Eve until we go back to work after New Year. We are lucky that both DH and I are always off between Christmas and New Year (didn't use to be the case so we really appreciate it!) We have a large family so the time from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day is full of family visits and then having time at home on our own with our grown up DC and their partners, eating, drinking, playing games, reading, watching films and having long walks with the dog. It is absolutely my favourite time of the year.

FancyFelix · 12/12/2022 06:43

The best days are always the ones when the jnaws aren't staying. So the run up before they arrive, and the few days before new year when they've finally buggered off home and I can relax and enjoy myself

Tiredalwaystired · 12/12/2022 07:23

Absolutely agree. I love the period between about 10th - 24th the best.

EveryLittleWish · 12/12/2022 07:52

Definitely OP ! We only just got our Christmas tree yesterday ( a bit later than usual but with two young kids, 3 cats and a puppy I couldn’t handle it any earlier )! It feels a bit more special though as we decorating it tonight and Christmas is less than two weeks away. We have so much planned over the next two weeks that it will go by fast but I finally feel like I’m proper excited now!!

psuedocream3 · 12/12/2022 08:10

Nope. I'm working all hours over Christmas and am exhausted. I don't have time to put up a tree, or wrap presents or days out. I think the actual day will be OK bit boxing day is my favourite. All the rubbish in the bins, go and have dinner with family at someone else's house, can leave when the guests start getting too tipsy, back to a calm household.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/12/2022 08:24

Did the tree yesterday, so from now till the day, but I’ve always enjoyed the week after just as much - it still feels very Christmassy, no shopping!! - except maybe for bread or milk, lots of lovely leftovers to eat up, so minimal cooking. Plus of course plenty of chocolates still unscoffed.🐷

mondaytosunday · 12/12/2022 08:40

Totally agree. The lead up, the anticipation, the socialising, the wrapping of presents, the feeling of good cheer in the air! After Christmas it just seems a bit dull. By New Years I'm ready to take it all down, the kids are bored and we all want to get back in the routine of normal life.

Christ. I can see you don't actually have to go to work! 🙄

kittenkipping · 12/12/2022 22:59

Halfsiesonapotnoodle- no need to be rude. I do work, but yes, am very fortunate to have the Christmas period mostly off. That doesn't take away from whatever days of the period are the best for you, which I'm sure are brilliant. That was the IPs question- what are the best days ? For her they are the anticipation days, for me that's not true. There's no need to suggest I don't work or be snarky. What are the best days of the period for you?

shinynewapple22 · 12/12/2022 23:08

That was a very snippy response @halfsiesonapotnoodle .
There are several jobs in which companies or offices close down completely between Christmas Eve and new year. This was always the case for my DH who worked in manufacturing and my DS who works in a warehouse . Not to mention anyone who works in a school.
