Gift for DC who wants a pet - that isn't a pet!

Title says it all, really.

Not ready to get DC a pet but they have been asking for one for more than a year now... Ideally a physical gift rather than an experience.

Don’t get a live pet unless you’re really committed and have the space. One of my Guinea pigs cost me 3 grand in vet bills in the last 6 months. Small exotic mammals like guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits can become expensive very quickly and need huge cages/areas of your home.

Rats are brilliant but again vet fees can be pricey.

What about goldfish and a tank? Easy to care for under supervision and some nice bits for dc to arrange in tank.

Goldfish are NOT easy to care for... they are the most abused animal who suffer the some of the shortest captive lifespan by pet owners but on no planet are they easy.

They a pond fish that require daily water monitoring, massive tanks and filters, live forty years and grow well over a foot long.

Unless you wack them in a bowl and let them die of nitrate poisoning and lack of oxygen as a baby (horrible abuse and a painful death).
