Games for Christmas Day - ideas?

FleasNavidad · 08/12/2022 09:02

Hi, this year there will be 15 of us for Christmas dinner. Does anybody have a good idea for after dinner games? Not around the table as we will be at 2 separate tables.

Something without a board where we can stay sitting comfortably on chairs/sofa and play?

All ideas welcome!

Strawberry shoe lace race: competitors put one end of a strawberry shoelace between their lips and then put their hands behind their back. Somebody else shouts go and all competitors race to get the shoelace into their mouth without using their hands.

After Eight race: similar to the shoelace race but start with an after eight on your forehead.

Jackbox is great but depends on how tech savvy your guests are as you all play on your phone but the actual game is on the TV, their are drawing games, quizzes all sorts! My family play it every year it's so fun. That or a Christmas quiz maybe , if you Google there are loads of ones you can print off, all you need is a quiz master and maybe a small token prize for the winner.

FleasNavidad · 08/12/2022 11:13

Yes maybe a quiz would work. Scattergories is a good shout. I'm trying to remember how linkee worked. Might have to have a trial run later!

Have you ever played Black magic or The Scissors Game? They are games that everyone can join in with. When my children were young Black Magic was very popular on New Years Eve with friends who had two young adults with learning difficulties, because everyone could be involved, including the young children. No equipment needed for that one, just two people "in the know". You need a "guesser" and a questioner. The guesser goes out of the room, and every one else gets together to decide on an object in the room. They then call the guesser back in and the questioner asks , for example, "Is it the lamp?" Is it that rug? What about Sue's jumper? Do you think it's my trousers? While the guesser pretends to think about each object before saying no. Eventually they "guess" the correct object. The guesser and questioner then swap places and a new object is chosen. When people think they know the magic, they become the guesser and much hilarity ensues when they get it wrong. Even more so when they guess right by accident and are sent out again, and get it wrong!
The scissors game is also simple, just pass scissors round in a circle, crossing and uncrossing and turning them round, and saying "crossed" or "uncrossed" as you pass them. The person or people in the know will say "Yes that's right" or "No, that's wrong" . Very funny when one person is right so the next person passes them in exactly the same position and is declared wrong!
I can explain the magic if anyone is interested!

SpotlessMind88 · 08/12/2022 13:13

Heads Up. It's really fun and everyone can play. Download it on your phone.

NannyR · 08/12/2022 13:18

Apples to apples is good, it’s a clean version of cards against humanity, we play with ages 7 to 70 and everyone enjoys it.

Chocolate race! You split into two teams. In the middle are two big chocolate bars a knife and fork. 2 pairs of gloves, scarves and hats. You need two dice. You pass the dice person to person on your team and roll. Every time someone gets a 6 they put the gloves, hat and scarf on and try to eat the chocolate with the cutlery. As soon as someone else gets a 6 they take the clothes and start doing the same. After a set time like five minutes, whichever team had the most chocolate wins. It sounds bonkers, but it's hilarious and so much fun. I have many fond memories of this one.

For Black Magic, it's simply that the item suggested immediately before the correct one is black! For the scissors one, it's nothing to do with the scissors, it's whether the person holding them has their legs crossed!
We also played a game where you need a bit of room. You sit in a circle and everyone takes it in turns to throw a dice, If you throw a six you go to the middle, put on a jacket mittens and a hat and try to cut a large bar of chocolate with a knife and fork . You can eat as many pieces as you can cut . Meanwhile, the dice is still going round until the next six is thrown. Clever people throw the clothing in all different directions to delay the dressing up, and you rarely get as far as the chocolate!

Snatch

you will need 2 packs of cards and some small gifts

put gifts in the middle of the room.
deal 1 pack of cards to all participants until you run out

you keep the other pack of cards and shout out the top card of the pack, whoever has the matching card gets to take a gift, then you reveal the next card and another gift is claimed. keep going until you run out of gifts and then the fun really starts.....
keep calling cards but instead of taking gifts from the middle you 'snatch' a gift from another player.
this carries on until all cards are used up and those left with gifts get to keep them

this game allows strategy from the host (you) fancy wrapping and comments can make people think some gifts are more desirable and people will try to win that one. the kids love it when they get the idea and the adults get super competative. we have had people hiding gifts to keep them.

Gifts i have included in the past includ £1 taped to the bottom of a wrapped empty box, forfeits or challenges, socks, colouring books, sweets, scratch cards mini bottles, smellies. you can choose prizes that suit the age groups, budget and occasion. i would normally wrap 1 gift for each of the participants, however, some people will get 3 or 4 gifts and others will get one/none

always goes down very well at family gatherings

Chocolate bar knife and fork game.

You need a hat, scarf, gloves large choc bar and a die. )on a tray.

Everyone takes turns to roll a 6. If you roll a 6 you have to put on the hat scarf and a gloves and grab the knife and fork and attempt to eat a piece of choc, at the same time people are still throwing the dice and if they throw a 6 they steal it off you. It's quite funny!

Fill half a dozen socks identically, with 10 small items eg, matchstick, werthers mint, pasta shape, peg etc. Safety pin or tack top of sock. Pen and paper needed to write the items down. Pass the socks around. You can blow a whistle every 20 seconds or so and the sock has to be passed on to person on the left.

Famous person photo quiz. Print out a few A4 sheets that you have downloaded photos of famous people on. IF you have elderly guests, put a few actors/ singers from 50s/60s in. I like to put a few tricky photos in (lesser known newsreader, historic scientists/authors/foreign ministers) Pen and paper required to write answers. Number the sheets and the photos and pass round till everyone has seen all the photos.

Can you explain the sock game?

AnneButNotHathaway · 09/12/2022 10:37

We also do a quiz in a form of a christmas slideshow, have a karaoke contest with popular holiday songs, make christmas collages and do glass painting. Look up Crayola markers, they are easy to get rid of and fun to paint with- www.amazon.co.uk/Crayola-Flamastry-rysowania-szkle/dp/B001FQKPSU/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=washable+glass+paint&qid=1670582213&sr=8-2

Can you explain the sock game?

It's just a quiz/guessing game. You fill a sock with 10 small items and safety pin/sew the top closed. Pass the sock round to all taking part and they have to try and work out what's in the sock and write down what the 10 items are. One point for each correct guess. Winner wins points or whatever your family gives as prizes. If there was a large group of guests I'd do 4/5 socks with identical items so people aren't waiting too long to get hold of one. Your guests will have to pass it/them around do everyone has a chance to guess.

Other items you can put in
Sugar cube
2p coin
Tea light
Tea spoon
Cotton bud
Etc

Consequences. You can play in armchairs using a placemat to lean on as long as you can form a circuit. I'm sure you probably know it but everyone seems to have a different way of playing it. Everyone needs a strip of paper, you write your addition and then pass it onto the next player. We do it like this:

Famous man
Famous woman
Where they met
He said to her
She said to him
The consequence was
The world said

Once you've finished, you then unfold them and use what's written to make a story. For example:

Nigel Farage met Dolly Parton on mumsnet. He said to her 'do you like my aubergine.' She said to him 'no thanks, I'm driving.' The consequence was a horrible mess on the carpet and the world said 'all's well that ends well.'

You could leave aubergines out of it with younger players 😆
