Any ideas for non-feminine 13 year old girl?

Does anyone have any ideas what we could get for a 13 year old family member? We really care for her and she's a cracking young girl but due to very traumatic experiences she is very 'streetwise' and on surface level acts far older than her years. She has no interest in makeup/hair/beauty and is most comfortable in Nike/addidas/north face clothing. As a lot of 13 year olds do, she struggles to receive sentimental gifts and I'm not sure of her exact dress size to buy any clothing. Last year a fake oodie went down a treat so I did wonder if something to bring comfort (in a non overpowering way) might be best, but what ?

What would you get a lovely girl in this situation who you wanted to show that you care and have her back? Budget flexible but approx £30

What does she like doing - does she have any hobbies that you could buy things for?

Haventhadaneggsinceeaster · 07/12/2022 22:17

heated throw? I have lost 2 to my teen daughters now!

TheGirlWhoLived · 07/12/2022 22:18

A cuddle cushion might be fun for her room? (It’s a high backed cushion with arms that sort of… cuddles you, not a cushion for cuddling!) maybe an ‘in’ book if she reads?

Pumperthepumper · 07/12/2022 22:19

Heelys?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/12/2022 22:21

Amazon sell these massive blankets that are printed to look like a flour tortilla. I always think they'd be fun for a teen!

MoiraRoseRules · 07/12/2022 22:25

Nike cross body bag

star projector for calming effects in bedroom

body spray is usually quite popular & feels less formal than perfume

cushion & novelty fairy lights for her bed

My non-girly 13 and 14 year olds have asked for books, clothes, things to do with hobbies, tshirts with slogans from beloved TV shows (esp Stranger Things). Is she into the Marauders (Harry Potter fan fiction, apparently much cooler among the teens than HP itself)? DD1 is obsessed and is constantly sending me links to marauders stuff from redbubble. Dark Academia is super popular among that age group, DD1 wants a 30th anniversary edition of 'The Secret History' and was not impressed when I told her she could read my first edition. Philistine.

I'd say no to Heelys, they view those as 'oh, yeah, do you remember when they were fashionable 5 years ago'.

A subscription to something like a BakedIn or ScrwlrBox? A nice (Lush?) bath set?

alasangne · 07/12/2022 22:33

Slipper socks
A nice mug
a blanket
Light projectors seem to be a thing

Precipice · 07/12/2022 22:35

Well, what does she like? If you don't know, ask another family member who knows her better. Asking strangers on the internet for vague ideas is unlikely to be too helpful - it might be if you said she likes ABCDE what else might she like, but not in this generic way.

What about some non-childish Lego?

How about a wreck this journal?

JubileeTrifle · 07/12/2022 22:41

I’ve ordered DD a kit from here:

buildiverse.com/collections/building-block-collection/products/mini-ramenbar-fish-store

I’ve also got dr martens, chocolate, paints, I always get her a special Christmas decoration, and pin badges.

SweetPeaPods · 07/12/2022 22:42

Does she like books or baking?
one of the lionesses think it's the captain has a autobiography out, or a janes patisserie cook book,
Jack wills set from boots, or nice set from body shop or lush?
Something for their room from Dunelm, my niece has asked for a neon dream sign.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 07/12/2022 22:54

North Face beanie or cross body bag?

Definitely not Heelys. Not many kids over 10 would want those and definitely not the child the OP is describing.

GanderingGoose · 07/12/2022 22:58

@Precipice I know her very well thank you. It doesn't necessarily make getting a gift that shows care any easier. There's no need to be so snarky. It's because I know her that I know she has no real permanent bedroom or easy access to a kitchen suitable for baking. She doesn't enjoy reading or any pop culture and hasn't really shown any interest in art. Her main activities seem to be hanging on the streets and her phone.

She is naturally very athletic though and enjoyed football and boxing before dealing with a shit hand in life whilst being a teenager took over this year.

Does anyone have any ideas related to boxing?

My quirky DD liked this at a similar age..

Burrito Tortilla Blanket, Perfectly Round Novelty Food Wrap Blanket Creative Food Flour Throw, Gifts for Mum, Comfort Wearable Blanket for Bed & Sofa amzn.eu/d/1kyfntO

or a heated throw, or just lovely fleecy lined blanket (best one was from a garden centre).

my DD is very sensitive to smell, she really likes her electric wax burner

Astin of London Stunning Electric Wax Melt Burners, Oil Burner, Wax Warmer, Night Light Oil Lamp for Home Decoration amzn.eu/d/8W7pAfI

GanderingGoose · 07/12/2022 23:05

@Alwayswonderedwhy thanks, I had north face accessories on my back up list.

I might mix this with a squishy pillow/cushion or fleecy blanket as I think that nearly teenager appreciates something soft, even if they might eye roll at the suggestion 😂

Is she still able to do sport and, if not,, what's stopping her? Might she need something really practical like new shin pads or a gum shield or something? Or a neon t-shirt or arm bands or something so she can go for a run in the dark?

determinedtomakethiswork · 07/12/2022 23:12

Is there a gym anywhere near that would accept her as a member?

I'm really worried about her when you say that she doesn't have a permanent place to sleep. Is she being looked after properly?

BadgerLovesMash · 07/12/2022 23:17

My dd is 14 and not girly at all, I have the trouble she doesn't like clutter and hates being spoilt as she worries about others having less than her.

Along the same lines as the oodie how about a big fleecy blanket (wilko, asda and primark are great!) And one of those long hot water bottles. Absolutely loved by dd on cold evenings and especially that time of the month!

Other hits have been a decent purse (with a few gift cards in!) mini backpack and cross body bag. She loves hot chocolate so a milk heater/frother and contigo travel cup, could gift with a Costa gift card. Large squishmallow for leaning against in bed. Overhead wireless headphones.

I know you said she's not into jewellery but my dd loves her crystal bracelets, you can get ones from etsy with a message on the card. I got her one that was for self confidence. If she believes in the crystals that's a bonus, if not its just a simple pretty bracelet! Wasn't very expensive either.

I'm getting her a boba tea kit, crafty stuff (posca pens etc), new duvet, clothes, funko figures and a lego set for Christmas.

An experience day like drive a sports car day type thing?

UWhatNow · 07/12/2022 23:28

Just invest in a pair of Nike Air Force trainers or a North Face puffer jacket - that’s all those kids wear - JD Sports is their uniform shop.
Chocolate.
Cool phone case - best ones are from Shien
Air pods.
Nandos/primark gift card.
Plain gold hoops or plain silver neck chain.

GanderingGoose · 07/12/2022 23:38

@MeOnSea those sock kits are amazing! Thank you so much for finding that. I think I might be able to persuade her to spend a few hours doing that with me.
