The dc love After 8 Mints, Pringles and various sweets but there's nothing in particular apart from the Christmas dinner itself and whatever we bake. I'm wondering what to buy to brighten up our very boring diets (sensory issues) so please tell me what your Christmas favourites are. We are veggie but tell me everything as I'll tweak recipes and ideas.

For me Christmas wouldn't be the same without Quality Street but this year is the last time I'll buy them because they've changed the wrappers and the chocolate gets worse each year. They were our family Christmas tradition from when I was tiny so I'm really disappointed.

Christmas isn't Christmas (to me) without the plastic processed cheese wrapped in bacon from M&S. I know this is useless to you as a veggie but it was slightly different than pigs in blankets and M&S doesn't appear to do them anymore, or didn't last year. I found some in Asda last year but haven't found them anywhere else. Praying Asda will come through for me again!

Buffet food, celebrations and pigs in blankets 😄

AutisticLegoLover · 07/12/2022 20:37

I've never heard of those but I can see the appeal. Last year I bought some veggie pigs in blankets to try because I've never in my life had one, either meet or veggie. No one liked them which was a shame.

Oh yes pigs in blankets.

Fragrantandfoolish · 07/12/2022 20:46

Other than traditional Christmas dinner?

i love crimbo brekkie, savoury of scrambled egg, salmon, croissants, cinnamon buns etc, and later markies canapés, with champagne.

we buy several of the markies chocolate panettone every year, it’s delicious warmed up with a baileys coffee

pizzaHeart · 07/12/2022 20:47

Smoked salmon, fancy cheeses and new chocolates.
We always bake something new with marzipan, cranberries or clementines.

MrsMontyD · 07/12/2022 20:48

Buffet food is the big hit here, I could just do a big buffet Christmas Day and they'd happily live in buffet leftovers for days after.

Essentials are hummus, cheeses, crackers, those mini sausages, posh/luxury type cheese coleslaw and scotch eggs. Home cooked ham for sandwiches and nice bread.

A nice box of chocolates and chocolate covered marzipans or marzipan fruits.

JamMakingWannaBe · 07/12/2022 20:49

For vegetarians, the Cathedral City individual potato dauphinoise are very nice. I also love celeriac dauphinoise.

For non-veggies, scallops in a white white jus with peas.

Neverknowinglysensible · 07/12/2022 20:51

Bread sauce. Everybody else hates it, but it’s the one time of year when I absolutely make a stand.
And proper Turkish Delight.

I am so with you! I was so upset M&S didn't have them last year, thank you for the Asda tip Grin

Dundee cake (home made) my mum started making this years ago as none of the family liked dark fruit cake.
Braised red cabbage (Delia Smith's recipe)
Mashed swede with butter and loads of salt, pepper and nutmeg.
Chocolate marzipan - Lidl is very good for this.
Dry roasted peanuts.
One of the non-traditional Christmas puddings from Lidl (we have the Bucks Fizz one this year)

WinterLobelia · 07/12/2022 21:02

I make christmas pudding ice cream.

Good vanilla ice cream, slightly softened mixed with sultanas; chocolate chips; maraschino cherries; a good slug of brandy; slivered almonds and then hardened up again in the freezer.

Sometimes I cut up little bits of stollen cake and mix through also, but this is definitely optional.

Leeds2 · 07/12/2022 21:05

One of those M&S lattice pork pies. No other pork pies will do, even ones which are much more expensive.
Cheese board, with crackers and chutney. Need Wensleydale, preferably stuffed with cranberries. Or ginger, at a push.
Sprouts.
Pigs in blankets.

Lollypop701 · 07/12/2022 21:12

mince pies… used to be greggs but they are so sweet this year so will need to taste lots of other… sigh 😂

Christmas pudding ice cream sounds so good! It's just occurred to me that you don't see ice-cream with sultanas in UK shops. I feel like it's pretty popular in mainland Europe??

Oh and if the fridge isn’t an adult Tetris I have failed

Bipbopbee · 07/12/2022 21:13

Home made cranberry sauce
Mince pies
Stilton
Port
Baileys hot chocolate
Mulled wine
Mulled cider
Wensleydale cheese with cranberries
Roasted chestnuts
Clementines
Eggnog

Basically a massive cliche

NewToWoo · 07/12/2022 21:17

Stilton with Carr's water biscuits and Hovis crackers shaped like mini loaves. Only have (or want) these at Christmas.Never buy Stilton at any other time of the year. But love it at Christmas.

My bodyweight in clementines and tangerines. I could eat half a dozen a day.
Walnuts in shells.

Don't say that. There was one hell of a bun fight the other year over the Christmas fridge thread! 🙈🤣

ouch321 · 07/12/2022 21:19

Xmas dinner obviously

Those melting cheese pots you dip breadsticks in

Mince pies and cream

Chocolate fudge yule log

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 07/12/2022 21:24

No one's mentioned tins of biscuits yet.

It's the season for fancy expensive biscuits.
