Scientific calculator

My son has asked for a scientific calculator for Christmas. He is only 8 so doesn’t need it for school/there isn’t one school has recommended.

I have no idea what I’m looking for in one- does anyone know? Thanks!

I'd look at getting the one recommended for GCSEs so that at least he will be familiar with the layout when the time comes. Schools here use this one amzn.eu/d/2phoYny

They sell casio ones in Wilkinsons. That's the one I got when DS started secondary school. It turns out it was on the school's kit list anyway. This one.

ConstableGoody · 07/12/2022 13:33

Thank you! They are the same one so it must be popular.

Yep, get the casio!

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 07/12/2022 15:21

Definitely the Casio, most secondary schools prefer that one

There are some more interesting coloured casios too if you think he'd find the black one boring.

Sallyh87 · 07/12/2022 21:06

Why does he want one? Is he really into maths??

DogInATent · 07/12/2022 21:12

Casio FX-85GTX, slightly different model than the one linked above but this was the one I've been recommended for an exam.

Against the grain.... Don't get one to set him up for gcse.... He's only 8!

What does he think is cool about a scientific one? Id go for something with the maximum number of features... That's what makes calculators cool! Or a scientific watch calc, loads of buttons!

If you can afford it, get a graphic one as they draw graphs!

ConstableGoody · 08/12/2022 13:14

Thanks everyone. @Sallyh87 he is autistic and is just really likes calculators!

Why not? They tend to last forever. I have 2 Casio calculators, my GCSE one and one I've somehow 'borrowed' from work. They're both well over 30 years old.

Plus it doesn't look like much has changed in calculator world in all that time.

Just as a by the by there is a few huge calculators around in the works if other family members are looking. Both my lads had a seige on them

one reason - functionality, for two opposing reasons.

A) there are calculators with MORE functions than allowed at GCSE, e.g. graphing, algebraic manipulation.

B) calculators definitely have changed in the last 30 years, and might change in the future, so possible that the current CASIO won't be the recommended one in 8 years.

BUT Casio FX-85GTX is a great calculator!
