Hello,

I’ve finished my Christmas shopping except for my lovely mum.

She is in her 60’s and pretty much housebound due to a chronic health condition that causes her a lot of pain.

She doesn’t need toiletries or make up, she has hundreds of books…please help, she deserves the world!

An oodie
A really nice throw blanket
Some nice, new pjs
Fluffy socks
Bath bombs
A hamper of all of her favourite treats to eat

Beebumble2 · 07/12/2022 11:13

You sound like a lovely daughter and spend a lot of time with your mum, but how about the gift of cards with ways spending time with her doing things, such as having an afternoon tea delivered, a pampering session, an hour or so listening to music or watching movies popular in her youth.
I’m sure you get the gist and think of more things to suit her interest.

An annual subscription to a magazine that she would enjoy? My mum doesn't get out too much either but enjoys being a mamber of the National Trust - members get a magazine each month and she feels she's supporting the places she used to enjoy visiting with my dad when he was alive.

Or a Kindle/I-pad?

I hope you and your mum have a lovely Christmas. x

WellTidy · 07/12/2022 11:16

A magazine and subscription? I got the radio times for my dad for Christmas last year and he loved it. I get a more lifestyle type one for my mum, but she also likes Woman and Home, and Good Housekeeping.

A mobile hairdresser visit? Or nails person?

heated throw?

a game or puzzle type thing she can play on her own?

insulated mug, so that she can have a hot cup of coffee next to her ?

slippers?

a painting? Or framed photo, or something she can look at when she’s at home

This is my 'good gift find' of the year for a book lover with too many books!

Blenheimprincess · 07/12/2022 11:24

Is there anything you can do that will help her health condition?
If there is, get that.

YoSofi · 07/12/2022 11:28

Well aren’t you all amazing? Some great ideas thank you, I love the card idea!

Last year I got her reflexology vouchers and some float tank vouchers, they really helped so she’s booked a block of more for each herself so that’s out!

A heated blanket is a brilliant idea so I’ll get that, as well as the hamper of treats. I thought about a NEOD diffuser to help her sleep too.

Shes such an amazing mum and grandma and I know this illness has been hard for her, mentally as well as physically so I want to spoil her a little.

Thank you so much for all of your ideas I’m going to look at them all x

Lovely words about your mum OP.

i'm mid thirties but mostly housebound with health issues, particularly at the moment as am recovering from a real dip in health and some things I've really appreciated or have just purchased myself and love:

Good quality fluffy electric throw blanket - so lovely for keeping cosy but also useful for pain.

New pillows/duvet or a back support cushion ( lots on amazon)

Aromatherapy diffuser or nice candles

Kindle

Some lovely Bookmarks (etsy is good for these)

New mug/tea & coffee bits and pieces such as syrups

Instant hot water machine if the kettle is something she struggles with.

Epsom Salts for the bath (which can be good for certain types of pain)

A neck pillow or infinity pillow, similarly a body support pillow for bed.

Postal gifts or subscriptions for cakes/brownies throughout the year, or vouchers for COOK where you can choose your own (nice) ready meals that come frozen.

Puzzle books

Comfy loungewear or new dressing gown

Monthly flower subscription (eg Freddies Flowers)

You don't say (and don't need to say) the nature of the illness but there might be other specific things that can make her more comfortable so I'd recommend looking on illness specific forums or on charity websites for her illness to see what they recommend.

Thank you so much for your lovely post, there are some fantastic ideas there!

She has fibromyalgia and arthritis, so all of those suggestions could work really well.

Im thinking of making her up a gift box with a lot of the ideas on this thread.

I’m really sorry to hear you’re struggling with Ill health too x

My mum loved a flower subscription from bloom and wild but other places do them. Obviously depends on if you think your mum will find arranging them hassle or not.

Gruelle · 08/12/2022 07:34

Your mother has all my empathy.

One thing she might be missing is going out to the theatre. So my suggestion would be a National Theatre at Home subscription.

The great thing for the giver is you can choose the number of months according to your budget. (See the drop down list.)

The great thing for the recipient is it’s the next best thing to being in the auditorium; you don’t have to be housebound to much prefer watching a live streamed play at home to battling through the current state of the nation in mid-Winter.

YoSofi · 08/12/2022 07:40

@alasangne ive ordered her a bloom and wild subscription 😊

@Gruelle that looks wonderful, thank you! What a great idea.

If your Mum is housebound, would she appreciate a trip/day out? You sound very thoughtful OP and with a little forward planning to ensure everything is organised so your Mum can be as comfortable as possible and so she’s not worried about being a burden to whomever is going with her?

another suggestion would be private yoga classes - you can search for yoga instructors with expertise in the conditions that your Mum has

YoSofi · 08/12/2022 08:03

@Wheelyweddingwipedout i would love to take her out for the day, I think not leaving the house has been really difficult for her mentally.

Only a few years ago she had a professor job at senior management level, so it’s been a massive change for her in a short space of time.

A previous poster mentioned making cards for her, so I’m going to do 12 and each month take her out somewhere, even just for a nice meal or a potter around a garden centre would be lovely for her.

We used to do yoga classes together before she got Ill, I hadn’t thought of that. Another lovely idea, thank you!

I second a magazine subscription. I've got one for each of my elder relatives and they love it.

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 08/12/2022 08:22

Audible subscription?

YoSofi · 08/12/2022 09:16

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 08/12/2022 08:22

Audible subscription?

Yes!!! I’m going to have no money left at this rate 😂

I can’t thank you all enough honestly, and I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas with your loved ones x

@Gruelle that is an inspired idea, thank you!! Love the idea that you can just select months at a time.

OP, my mum likes to listen to radio plays/audio books (Agatha Christie in particular), so something like that?

Something she could entertain herself with without having to move around much, like a book club subscription or a slideshow program. Maybe a snack box subscription so that unique snacks would get delivered to her every month.

stimpy1 · 08/12/2022 22:25

How about some wrist warmers. Celtic company has £20 off a £20 spend at the moment code - UK20XMAS
