16 Ds says he’d like a bit of Lego 🙈

Hardly got anything to wrap for him, it’s all money towards a car so wouldn’t mind getting him some. He’s had a couple of the architecture sets. Need something challenging and ideally under £40. Any ideas appreciated 😬

the way they package lego these days, even the biggest sets really aren't challenging. I tip all the bags into one, to make it a little more challenging! So many sets have large pieces in them, they do make the finished product look more sleek, but it's definitely make it less challenging.

is it going to be a surprise? Or could you ask him which sets he's interested in?

@SkylightSkylight as I said upthread there a loads of decent Lego sets for under £40. They don't have to be 'challenging' - they can just be FUN.
I am a Lego obsessive (you can probably tell from my user name). One of my favourite things is getting 2 very different smaller sets (ie from different themes) and combining them into something else.
One of my favourites is the Creator 3 in 1 Dinosaur (which costs about £15) and you could get a Speed Champion car (similar price). Build both. Take apart. Combine the sets.....ta da you now have a dino-car.
I think some people have forgotten how to 'do' Lego 🤣

Agree totally @SkylightSkylight - even the smaller creator 3 in 1 sets are fun. The dinosaur like you mentioned is great, as are the deep sea creatures and the fantasy creatures sets. You could get all 3 for under 40

I just bought DS this Lego Technic catamaran - it really floats on water so this makes it a real grown up set IMO.

Sports direct have it for £18 online and instore (not always the case with them). They also have the Technics tiger mentiond for £35.

speed champions are fab - <£20 for single cars and they have a bunch of different types www.lego.com/en-gb/themes/speed-champions

If he wants it to mess about and make own stuff with then worth a look on marketplace as you might well get a boxfull secondhand that he can make all sorts out of.

Reading with interest. My 40 something self wants some lego.

If I was getting a set for myself I'd probably buy the orchid. Much easier than the real thing which always dies on me.

My dd bought me some small Christmas Lego last year as I fancied having a go. I loved it. This year I'm getting a massive pick up truck I'm 64.

I wanted to get this for DS 16, it was only £35 when I looked. He loved similar ones when he was little. I asked if he'd like a lego set and he declared them not worth the money 😕. Which is why I stopped getting them after age 8, he just built them too fast and I couldn't afford a bigger set. I'd love it but can't justify buying it for myself!

Yes, I’d like to get ds 14 some, he loves it but it’s soooooo pricy and he does it in seconds. Are there any really challenging ones that don’t break the bank?
land yes, I think people have forgotten how to do Lego as a pp said. It used to be advertised as how many different things it could become, now it’s like mini ikea furniture kits!

@Athenen0ctua you can never build a Lego set too fast because it's never ending....you can build whatever you want. Even if you only have a few bricks.

Moomoola you could try looking up instructions for sets, using the bricks he already has. There’s a Lego app that has set instructions, but also sites like brickset or brick link will tell you (after a bit of initial set up and input of data) which sets you have the right bricks for (even if not necessarily in the right colours), so lots more can be built.

there are a fine of user creations instructions too, sometimes to download for a small fee, which can prolong the joy.

my ds is 10, but regularly looks up MOC stuff and rebuilds it from the general Lego bricks (ie all the sets that have been built, played with and then swept up into the general Lego stash), along with his own ideas.

If by any chance you can get to the lego shop its incredible and has so much that I would never have thought of. Sorry not much help!

I buy DH lego every year - top tip, the ‘adult’ lego is cheaper online through Smyths toy stores.
