What do people do with their real christmas trees after christmas? Can I take it to the dump or not?

Generally we cut ours up and the council do an extra green wheelie bin collection and take them for composting. They tell us when they will be collecting them. Some years we leave them whole and they are collected to help stop erosion on sand dunes.

This is great! What do you use to cut the tree?

Council collects them. No need to cut. They will say on council website what days after Xmas they will collect ( usually 7th onwards)

Meceme · 05/12/2022 16:09

If you need to cut we just use secateurs to cut off smaller branches and leave the trunk intact.

pimlicoanna · 05/12/2022 16:11

Leave by the bins and the Council takes them

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/12/2022 18:47

Ours stays up until 6th Jan - we then cut it up with secateurs where it is - to avoid dragging it out and having needles all over the floor - all bits go into a gash bag, dh will take that plus the poor bare ‘trunk’ to the tip for recycling into compost.
If we left it out whole, the council would take it for composting.

Lobbed behind some other trees in the garden. The council do collections every year and never take ours! For a few years we realised our neighbour had taken it and thrown it in the river (probably thought he was doing us a favour).

I don't think our council is collecting them this year so I expect we'll be adding another tree to the collection in the garden.

We have a local charity and for a £5 donation they collect and shred it.

mondaytosunday · 05/12/2022 20:43

Council take it. Some you have to book, some you just have to leave it visible but not on the pavement, by a certain date. Check on your council website.

mynameiscalypso · 05/12/2022 20:44

If you have to transport it anywhere (we take ours to a specific recycling point), you can put it in an empty duvet cover and it stops bits going everywhere.

ShowOfHands · 05/12/2022 20:47

Here, you can take it to a local place and they'll chip it and give it back to you to use on your garden or the council will collect it and make compost.

Sometimes, I strip it myself and compost it.

Same. St. Nicolas hospice care collect for £5. It raises money and they chip the trees and use them around newly planted trees in the area.

AriettyHomily · 05/12/2022 21:01

We have to take it to a special council drop off, or there are a few charities who will come and collect for £10

Shodan · 05/12/2022 21:19

The Scouts do a collection here. I think it costs £10.

I cut mine up and add it to the log store. I have a chainsaw that I'm always looking for an excuse to use 😁

TheChosenTwo · 05/12/2022 21:22

Our council collects but we have to book a slot and cut it in half (think just because of the height, under a certain height and I think they take it while) and leave it out by a certain date for collection. Which they forget to collect every year and dh always has to call up and they have to come back out again for our end of the street 🤦‍♀️

saturdaymorningbored · 05/12/2022 21:43

Our council do a special collection after Christmas. We just put the tree out on the day and they collect them all. I'd look into see if your council does the same
