Cooking question: Does anyone here make mincemeat using beef suet?

I can’t eat palm fat (intolerance) so I’ve just made a batch of mincemeat using beef suet, following a simple BBC Goodfood recipe which basically involved putting all ingredients in a pan and stirring over a gentle heat then dousing the lot in brandy.

I’m having misgivings over the safety of the beef suet given that it hasn’t been cooked at a high temperature. Do you think it’ll be ok?

The recipe I use is Delia's and that's how she says to do it too. I make it that way and it's always been fine. I think it's probably been made that way for generations but I've never heard of anyone becoming ill from eating mincemeat.

I don't make mincemeat as a rule, but if I did it would contain beef suet. Fret ye not, as said above, it's been done like that for generations. Beef is fairly inert anyway. Eat and enjoy!

You still have to bake the actual pies at high heat, don't you? So there you go. Don't eat it from the jar

Definitely warn anyone that it won't be vegetarian as I think it's generally expected now.

Wow! Thank you. I really appreciate the quick responses. It’s the first time I’ve made mincemeat so I didn’t even think about the suet issue until I was putting it into jars.

As it happens the only vegetarian in my life lives hundreds of miles away so the veggies are safe…

I have an amazing mincemeat recipe that does not use suet but apple instead.
