He liked the Cherub series as well as Young Bond and those Anthony Horowitz ones about a young spy (have forgotten the name!)

Suggestions welcome- could be adult fiction rather than YA.

Philip reeve mortal engines series
Or his goblin series y

frozendaisy · 03/12/2022 09:47

They are more sci fi than spy but by all accounts (by a 13 boy) excellent

PushingAnElephantUpTheStairs · 03/12/2022 09:51

My teen likes the series you've mentioned and also likes the Maze Runner series.

PhantomErik · 03/12/2022 09:51

I'd recommend:

Maze Runner
Divergent
Hunger Games

Following! My DS used to be such a keen reader but has lost his enthusiasm recently. Would really love to find new books to spark the love again! He loved the Cherub series too but we've struggled since then.
I've bought him Six of Crows for Christmas.
He has enjoyed the Murderer's Ape recently and the sequel (the false rose I think?)

fruitpastille · 03/12/2022 10:02

My DS liked The Edge Chronicles by Chris Riddell and someone else.

Percy Jackson is popular with kids that like Alex Rider.

Also Holes by Louis Sachar is brilliant and funny.

Patrick Ness is another write popular teen boy author but personally I'm not that keen.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 03/12/2022 10:25

Just remembered actually, my DS does love these books by Robert Muchamore...
Robin Hood

CoffeeChocolateWine · 03/12/2022 10:26

Same author as the Cherub series

AnnPerkins · 03/12/2022 10:33

Has he read The Enemy series by Charlie Higson? DS has read them all more than once. I’m looking for something similarly as he liked the dystopian thing.

DMDCAGM · 03/12/2022 13:44

This is fab, thanks so much! I was standing in our crap WHSmiths pressing refresh on this thread but they're useless for anything other than little kids' books. Will move my search online... thanks again!

What about introducing him to some classics; War of the World's, 1984, Animal Farm, The Outsiders, Sophie's World etc

DMDCAGM · 03/12/2022 15:47

Thanks - yes I will definitely consider this. He's been enjoying a Christmas Carol in English Lit.

Oh yes, mine has too...loving it! We live in London and I took him to see it on stage at the Old Vic theatre and I basically got a running commentary from him and pointing out where it deviated from the book 😆

DMDCAGM · 07/12/2022 16:34

UPDATE! Turns out he has Mazerunner (i knew it sounded familiar) and didn't like it. Nor does he like fantasy type books (this is the kid who devoured the whole of Harry Potter in Y4 but I guess people change!)

Are there any murder mystery type things for young adults? Ideally aimed at a higher reading age than the murder most unladylike etc books which his 10 yo sister is into.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

SittingontheSidelines · 07/12/2022 16:40

H.I.V.E "top-secret school of applied villainy where children with a precocious gift for wrongdoing are sent to develop their talents into criminal mastermind."

PandaG · 07/12/2022 16:46

James Bond?
Sherlock Holmes?

SquirrelFan · 08/12/2022 22:02

Try "Otherworld" by Jason Segal
The Martian by Andy Weir
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (properly adult)
Running Girl by Simon Mason (protagonist is teen boy trying to solve friend's disappearance /murder)
Or Carrie or Christine by Stephen King - also are properly adult

Needmorelego · 08/12/2022 22:04

Has he read the Cherub prequals? They're called Henderson's Boys.

JanglyBeads · 08/12/2022 22:32

Karen McManus writes good high school murder mysteries, eg One of Us is Lying

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 08/12/2022 22:43

My 14 year old anti reader really enjoyed the Benjamin Zephaniah books (Face, Gangster Rap, Terror Kid, Teachers Dead and Refugee Boy). Also One of Us is Lying which I think is on Netflix now.

wesayno · 09/12/2022 02:25

Darren Shan

Oo yes Darren Shan is great.

SummerLightning · 09/12/2022 10:15

Try project hail Mary for an adult book

On murder mystery my family listened to "a good girls guide to murder" - I thought it was annoying but the rest of my family liked it including 13 yr old son
