Would love a thread to share ideas 😊

Here are a few from our house:

-Walk/drive around to see everyone's Christmas lights
-Father Christmas brings balloons as well as presents
-Christmas film in PJs with hot chocolate on Christmas Eve
-Make homemade Christmas cards with the kids

Get some magic fire sachets from Amazon or similar and have a special Christmas fire outside on a firepit. My children love getting all togged up in hats etc and fire watching when it's cold. I have sparklers left over from bonfire night so might do some of those too.

We always decorate a gingerbread house too, they love that activity. Aldi sell them already built so the kids just stick lots of sweets on it and decorate it with icing.

Frosty walk around the woods with a thermos of hot chocolate and some biscuits.

Paperchains! Such a lovely way to keep them occupied for a bit. Also big paper snowflakes to stick to the windows.

Carols by candlelight and/or a Nativity service at the local church
Get Christmas books from the library
Sleep next to the Christmas tree (effectively camping in the living room!)
Use the ‘Santa tracker’ app or website on Christmas Eve www.noradsanta.org/en/

Came here to say paperchains!

And smash up a handful of cereal for reindeer food. Normal cornflakes or half a weetabix is fine.

YouTube carols

Treasure hunt set by an elf or Santa maybe with chocolate Santa at the end,

Playing board games, card games or doing a jigsaw together - whatever you already have available. Absolutely loved by my dc. Can even be games like charades if you don't have any games to hand.

Spending time together is more magical than things.

Also, making salt dough decorations is cheap and lots of fun. Best if the whole family joins in imo.

Home baking, decorating the gingerbread house.
Walks in the dark to see light up houses.
Homemade paper chains.
Sleepover in living room for movie night.

This is a great idea as well :

We always make mince pies whilst listening to the Carols from Kings on the radio on Christmas eve. Ready made pastry and shol bought mince meat still make delicious pies if you can't be doing with making them from scratch.

If the garden centre has Christmas trees in small "grove" take the little ones to "hide and sneak" around the forest- be quiet in case of bears! Then just a hot chocolate in the cafe. I'd only do this at very quiet times and dd was under 6yo.

Make decorations using pre cut card or paper and Christmas stickers

KnickerlessParsons · 03/12/2022 01:02

Christmas doesn't really need to be "magical" though, does it? Everyone needs to have a food time, with some presents they like to unwrap and a good meal, with some family games or maybe a family film in the afternoon.
Why does it need to be "magical"?

Well, it doesn't have to be, but presumably the op would like it to be, hence them asking this question.

Magicalness is fun!

No, I suppose not, but if you're four, Christmas with a sprinkling of fairy dust makes it more memorable.

I decorate my ds' room while he's asleep - fairy lights, tinsel etc so he wakes up on Christmas morning to a bit of sparkle.

This year he's 14 and I'm going to put up fairy lights, change the lamp shades, try to swap his duvet for a Christmas one without him waking up (pillowcases may be a challenge), add Christmas cushions and tiny Christmas tree. It's becoming a family joke, just how much can happen while he sleeps through it. 😀

Homemade decorations - cut out snowflakes together and stick them to the windows. Make paper chains, if people are old enough to write/read then put little messages on them.
Bake a desert together - its fun, and the house will smell extra special.
Don't forget to leave a carrot and a mincepie (carrot can be recycled into christmas dinner without kids knowing) for Santa and the Reindeer.Have Santa leave a thank you note for the kids to find in the morning.
