Hi , what are you all cooking for New Year’s Day dinner ? We’re usually sick of roast and cold meat by New Year’s Day

Either salmon en croute with parsley mash and creamed greens, or venison sausage casserole with red cabbage and mustard mash.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/12/2022 12:26

Steak pie always. It's a Scottish thing.

Home made steak pie. It's the law in Scotland

Jericha · 04/12/2022 13:53

I've not heard of this steak pie tradition before but I think I may have to copy it!

chipsandpeas · 04/12/2022 13:56

steak pie

FayKnights · 04/12/2022 13:58

We live in SE, but always have meat pie thanks to my Weegie DH 🤤

christmaslover88 · 04/12/2022 14:09

Ooh I didn't know about the Scottish steak pie tradition but we always have chicken, ham and leek pie. Pre-kids we would always go for new years day lunch at a specific pub which make the best pies! Now with kids and having moved further away it's not practical to go there every year so I make my own pie

Depends if we have guests, assuming so external guests (will have 7 even without extras!) I'll probably make curries and accompaniments as caters for the vegetarian easily and the bigger eaters (2x 20 something boyfriends who I don't know their preferences) plus a foodie who at least will help me.

I'm in the US Deep South. New Year's Day dinner is very prescribed: some form or pork, usually ham, black-eyed peas for good luck, and greens (spinach, turnips or collards) for prosperity. Oh and rice and cornbread because they taste really good with black-eyed peas.

Hoppin' John - ham hock, black-eyed peas, rice & spices. I'm in Somerset but heard about it years ago & its yummy!
