Christmas Mushrooms

I'm curious. Was eyeing up some new Christmas decorations and there seem to be a lot of mushrooms (I think I bought one last year). What's the significance of mushrooms and Christmas? Have I missed something?

Hasn't it just come from 'winter woodland'?

Stompythedinosaur · 30/11/2022 00:05

I don't know, but I love it! I've always had a woodland theme to my decorations!

Here you go, OP!

Must say, the whole thing had passed me by. But then I only heard about the Christmas pickle ornament tradition last year, so...

Ylvamoon · 30/11/2022 05:56

I know them to symbolise good luck, especially for the new year.

Slowdayinfleetstreetisit · 30/11/2022 05:57

I got some lovely ones from Selfridges (luckily not at normal Selfridges prices 😉) they’re super cute.

Ylvamoon · 30/11/2022 06:03

... for good Luck!

I have some Harry Styles ones.
Meh, traditions change.

Wolfieisagoodboy · 04/12/2022 21:40

There are some fun theories that basically the Santa myth evolved from Shamans getting high on fly agaric mushrooms. They grow under fir tress during midwinter. fantasticfungi.com/the-interesting-connection-between-christmas-and-mushrooms/

RevivingSeaBreeze · 05/12/2022 08:37

@Wolfieisagoodboy
Galloping through Christmas Eve's night skies with Santa, are Rudolph & co flying high, or 'high' on fly? That is the question.

Hmm.

I bought a wooden sausage dog decoration somewhere in Europe a few years back. It has a pull string and the legs move.

Paperchase this time 🙂

i have a balloon T. rex and a green glittery snail from John Lewis though. The TRex has been up all year 😂

Herja · 05/12/2022 10:14

They were traditionally related to Norse mid winter celebrations. The Norse people (and deer!) ate them for their hallucinogenic properties, particularly duting the festival, and like many of our christmas and easter traditions, it eventually ended up part of the christmas celebration shizzle. Bit like easter eggs and Eostre.

DepIndoChridmadWidMe · 05/12/2022 13:07

Goblin core?

Vinylloving · 05/12/2022 13:43

I have a Christmas toadstool! Definitely a theme, winter, woodland, magical etc

Lovemusic33 · 05/12/2022 13:46

I bought one in the garden centre last week, I have a few but I display them most of the year as they are pretty (and not really festive), they re wind my of autumn but I guess autumn does kind of go up too Christmas now the seasons are shifting a little. Flay agaric mushrooms are kind of magical and make me think of fairies.
