Lego city train for 11 year old

My 11 year old has asked for the remote control lego city train for Christmas. I've had a look and the starting age range is 7+ . He's lego obsessed and has built some of the adult/older teens sets so I'm concerned that the lego in this will be too easy for him and over in an hour or so.

I have said this to him and he is saying he still wants it and doesn't care if its easy to build, but it will be his main present and I'm worried he'll be disappointed if its done very quickly.

Has any lego lovers got one of these and can advise me if it's worth it? (I know I will end up buying it since he's adamant it's what he wants, I just want reassuring it's a good lego present!)

Which train set is it? There' s a passenger train one which is a bit dull and a freight one which lots more interesting:

I think it's worth it. My Lego fan got his age 10 I think. Other family members got him extra track, station etc. It doesn't half go through batteries though...

There's another freight set which also looks fun:

At the moment a bit of hunting around might get you £20 off.

My ten year old has it. He got it last year. He still likes it. He builds it really quickly but is happy to dismantle it and do it again a few weeks later. Lego is the bane of my life 😂there’s lego everywhere in my house.

We have the Lego city train. It was actually quite hard to build- my son was a bit young and impatient at 9 so lots of help from me and his dad- one carriage alone took over an hour. (Although we might just be rubbish!)

It has been fab though- we've added extra track so the set up is always different, and it comes with a platform. My youngest who is 8 plays with it now and has added his hogwarts express to it. He makes a complicated track system so platform 9 and 3 quarters is next to the city platform (but obviously invisible to the normal passengers!!!)

He has now asked for the Lego freight train for Christmas which we've got for him too.
Might just build an extension to house all this track- Network Rail have got nothing on us...!! 🚂🙄

My train-and-Lego-obsessed 12 year old has it and plays with it constantly; unlike some Lego sets it functions well as an interactive toy so it’s not just about the build. Other posters are right though; you also need shares in Duracell! DS is currently trying to add a pendalino-style tilting mechanism to his so it can go faster round corners 😂

Needmorelego · 28/11/2022 10:03

Well I was age 44 when I got my first Lego train 🤣
If finances allow I think there is a station you can get too, plus get some extra track.
Best Christmas pressy ever. Lucky 11 year old.

Thanks for all of the replies. It is the passenger train that he wants but I love the freight train in the first post so might show him that one! I feel better about getting it now and think I will get some extra track to go with it.

Is he the sort to build the kit only as intended, or to have ago at building something else from the parts from his own imagination?

Get him a little extra track and wagons, and introduce him to shunting puzzles. The inglenook is a very basic one - www.wymann.info/ShuntingPuzzles/Inglenook/inglenook-trackplan.html

My son got one for Xmas a few years ago and I have another put aside for him next Xmas when he will be 11... I got the Xmas train and made it move in my late 30s lol

nauticant · 28/11/2022 16:45

You might want to not let him check out all of the trains on lego.com:

My 12 yr old wants this too OP and I have the same concern - great thread! He loves the Lego city theme the best but the sets seem to easy for older kids - I feel like providing this feedback to Lego.

Blessedbethefruitz · 28/11/2022 19:18

The passenger train is still on a pretty good deal on amazon at £86 just in case you'd not spotted it. My boy is much younger so I've managed to hold myself back on this one...

Lego City is a train set that happens to be made of Lego. How can it be "too easy" when it's only limited by imagination? e.g.

Have you seen the number of older teenagers and adults making brilliant inventive Lego videos on YouTube?!

The sky’s the limit with such a creative toy.

nauticant · 28/11/2022 19:34

And even cutting edge composers:

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 28/11/2022 19:43

@nauticant 😁

Needmorelego · 28/11/2022 19:53

@nauticant I know the chap who did the Lego of that video. Lovely bloke.
@FixItUpChappie yes City has been dull the last few years. Police and Fire, Police and Fire over and over. I tend to get the Creator 3 in 1 sets that are minifig scale to make my city more interesting.
The little supermarket and carrot juice truck are pretty cool though. They are on my Christmas list.

spiderontheceiling · 28/11/2022 20:12

DS had it for his 9th bday, built it over a couple of days (other things going on), played with it endlessly for a couple of weeks and then that was kind of it. It is a brilliant toy tho

DelurkingAJ · 28/11/2022 20:16

@Needmorelego I agree. I was delighted to see there’s a hospital this year (although DS2 is Ninjago obsessed and DS1 is rapidly growing out of Lego City 😢).

We have just built our Xmas train as a family and it will spend Xmas going round under the tree. A very happy family afternoon!
