Hi. My Mum, step dad and 2 sisters aged 21 and 19 are coming on boxing day. I dont really host so will be worrying! Plus they are very critical and speak their minds. My sisters are veggies.
Im in 2 minds to do a buffet type meal or cook something...
Any suggestions please? x

Do a buffet style meal especially if you have veggies 😭 good luck x

I normally do a buffet on Boxing Day. Last year I did:

Beetroot and gin cured salmon with cucumber pickle
Sausage roll with chilli jam ginger and coriander
Ginger, chilli and potato patties
Mushroom pate
Tomato and butterbean salad
Leftover sprouts with pistachio and pomegranate
Beetroot terrine using the rest of the beetroot from the salmon
Baked potatoes
A cheeseboard
Mince pies and Christmas cake

falafel, pitta, shredded salad and yoghurt-based dip
Boxing Day trifle (lime jelly, clementines, pomegranate seeds)
or Risalamande, the Danish rice pudding with a hidden almond

We have venison on Boxing Day but I'm guessing that's not helpful here? What will they have eaten the day before?

Christmas day will be turkey etc (not sure what they will eat!)
Ive found a lovely sauage roll plait and turkey sandwich. Thought I wouyld get a couple nice veggie pizzas. Cheese board, smoked salmon and bubble and squeek. I like the idea of falafels and pittas

I make a huge Bubble and Squeak ahead of time and freeze it.
Take it out of the freezer on Christmas Day.
Serve with ALL the pickles and cheeses.
Perhaps some worn nugget type things but we find the Bubble and Squeak enough.

I make the left over Turkey into curry.

Add some hummus and crudités to the falafel and pitta and I will be there!!

We do a buffet. We have leftover turkey, gammon and stuffing (aldi seem to have a good selection of veggie/vegan alternatives), homemade potato salad, homemade coleslaw, mashed potato, salami, pork pie, cheeseboard, pickles, crusty bread, sweetcorn, salad and homemade sausage rolls. Then a big pudding. The meal usually lasts a good couple of hours and everyone loves it.

TrufflesForBreakfast · 27/11/2022 07:38

We do a buffet too:

Baked ham (usually cooked on Christmas Eve and half eaten then)
Baked potatoes
Coleslaw
Green salad
Cheese and chutneys
Baked baguettes
Quiche
Sausage rolls

Any leftover Turkey and stuffing (if we've hosted the day before)

For pudding, trifle and something alternative like cheesecake or apple pie with festive creams and ice cream.

Are they vegan or vegetarian?
dips, breadsticks, chicken drumsticks, cheeses , chutney , potato salad, cheese and pineapple sticks ( very 80s!) apple and walnut salad , pasta salad ( pasta cucumber cherry tomatoes parsley lemon and olive oil)
some party bits from the supermarket
you can do a nut roast also

What about some easy pastry things, maybe Brie and cranberry?
I usually do a buffet Boxing Day- left over meat, homemade sausage rolls/pastry nibbles, cheese board, crudités and dips etc but one year I made a huge lasagne and veggie lasagne instead.

itsalldowntome · 27/11/2022 08:27

What level of vegetarian are they? If strict bear in mind that not all cheese is vegetarian. Make sure anything you buy has the green V symbol or says suitable for vegetarians on the packaging. Also pay close attention to puddings. Anything with a shiny glaze or mousse filled is not likely to be veggie.

I'd probably do a buffet I think it's easier when theres lots of people.
