What time do you eat lunch on Christmas Day?

I'm hosting Christmas Day for the first time this year and I'm not sure what time to serve the main meal.

At my parents house we never had a set time, we've eaten at 1pm, 3pm, 5pm but this year they are coming to us and I'm not sure when to serve.

My sister hosted last year (I did Xmas Eve), and when we got there at 11am, she served pastries and fruit which was very filling, and then we ate about 4pm and were comatose for the evening.

I don't want to serve pastries etc as think it will be too much food, so not sure if we should eat earlier?

My OH is doing the main meal and I'm doing everything else (including opening two dozen oysters!) and I don't want us having to get up really early.

I will have bowls of crisps, nuts and olives out before lunch, should I put anything else out?

Sorry for the rambling - I just want it to be perfect!

We eat at 4 , I like to some family time and not to be rushing around before the masses descend

LolaSmiles · 23/11/2022 22:09

We tend to eat between 2-3pm.

We don’t have lunch. We have a snack in the morning, seafood brunch late morning, then dinner at 1800 (sometimes later depending on how the roast potatoes are faring/how much champagne the cook has consumed!).

OvO · 23/11/2022 22:14

6pm

greaterscott · 23/11/2022 22:14

About 2pm

Lcb123 · 23/11/2022 22:16

About 7.30pm. No kids in family so lie ins and lazy day!

BHRK · 23/11/2022 22:17

About 1.30pm. Then we can just relax the rest of the day rather than thinking about the lunch!

Cuwins · 23/11/2022 22:19

As our evening meal about 6 although this year it will be 5 due to the 10m old!
We have cheeses, cold meats, bread etc at lunch time.

maddy68 · 23/11/2022 22:20

We eat around 2-3

MrsRinaDecker · 23/11/2022 22:20

Growing up we had croissants first thing with coffee and stockings. Lunch around 1 o’clock (my dad was up at 7 to put the turkey in!) Then sometime in the evening there would be cold meat, salad, Christmas cake, etc (and beetroot.. there was always beetroot..)
As an adult, and especially now with adult dc, we’ve done brunch, and then Christmas dinner in the evening, which works well, but only without small dc I think.
Ex mil served around 4, which was the worst of both worlds for me (too long after breakfast, not late enough if there was lunch, everybody fills up on the crisps and things) but I know some people prefer it.

MrsMontyD · 23/11/2022 22:21

Usually around 2pm.

Nejnej2 · 23/11/2022 22:21

We eat around 2, ready to pass out in a food coma in front of whatever the BBC Christmas film is!

We tend to eat between 2-3pm.

Same - not too early for getting the turkey on. We have a normal sized breakfast, have tried fancy ones but it takes too much time and fills us up too much! And it’s supplemented with chocolate.
We do smoked salmon / ham / prosciutto and cream cheese blinis as pre-lunch nibbles / starter - I get the kids to make them and hand them round. They’re nicely filling to help keep you going, but not so much it puts you off lunch. And get a few snacks out too and also drinks. It’s a race against time getting the final stages of dinner ready and not getting a bit too tipsy on a couple of glasses of fizz on an empty stomach!

Then leftovers sandwiches at about 9pm if we have room. Poached eggs and toast for the kids if they want as well!

It will be when it's ready! It will only be my oh, son and me, and we will eat at sometime between 2-4pm, but will be a relaxed affair. I'll cook the beef and gammon on Christmas eve, and will get either a turkey breast or chicken joint too, will cook that on Christmas morning, I'll also prepare the veg and everything else on Christmas Eve, so on the day it just has to be whacked in the oven

AdoraBell · 23/11/2022 22:24

For me it depends on stress levels. I aim to have the main meal between 2 and 3 pm. Least said about last year the better.

gogohmm · 23/11/2022 22:24

1.30/2 here. All ready for it. We don't do nibbles or starters unless chocolate counts

TenThousandSpoons · 23/11/2022 22:25

1:30 lunch. Nibbles in the evening.

gogohmm · 23/11/2022 22:25

But yes nibbles in the evening, and a cheese board

nocoolnamesleft · 23/11/2022 22:28

Generally about 13:30.

OneFrenchEgg · 23/11/2022 22:29

We've always done 2pm for main roast and then presents, but this year we are going to try a main meal at 6pm, and presents after a light lunch. Kids were a bit worried they'd have to wait until after dinner 😂

Snugglemonkey · 23/11/2022 22:30

We have breakfast, smoked salmon, scrambled egg, croissants, fruit around 10. That keeps everyone happy until dinner at around 4. We say we will have sandwiches later, but we mostly end up having dessert around 7, so the notion of sandwiches goes off us.

BobbyBleu · 23/11/2022 22:34

We eat at 1pm ish. We seem to be in the minority when I talk to other people and read the replies on here.
The kids get up early so are more than ready for food and none us fancy a big breakfast so we just eat a couple of chocolates and have a big lunch at 1ish.

OrigamiOwls · 23/11/2022 22:36

We tend to eat between 1-1:30

astarsheis · 23/11/2022 22:36

We have ours about the same time as "King's Speech', then leave all the dishes and go for a walk and a drink at the pub. On our return we have pudding and then clean up. Have more drinks, maybe play a game. After having a bit of a chill and watching a film, the buffet comes out.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 23/11/2022 22:36

5-6pm. We like to have a nice brunch Christmas morning after opening presents. Kids nibble junk food (if hungry) until our three course Christmas meal.
