Book for Nan...suggestions

My DNan loves to read. And having read the recent thread on here, "Books you can't put down" I looked for ideas. A lot of usual suspects, then Fingersmith, which I knew nothing about. Perfect, thought I.

First review I found states "lesbian romp" Grin Maybe not so much for DNan...

She loves autobiographies, plus traditional reads, but is far from a sheltered little old lady (maybe Fingersmith would be ok, just don't know if she'd assume I had read it too and feel uncomfortable that I'd selected it for her, IYKWIM). She loves things that are really interesting, particularly true to history, or very closely based on history, as opposed to fantasy or creative story telling. No Jilly Coopers or Cartlands. She loves celebs and personalities of her era. Attenborough, Wogan, Anne GlenConner.

What should I go for?

Apparently the books by what’s his face off Strictly (Anton?) are good. My Grandma thinks they’re wonderful, and not as cheesy (though I suspect they are) but very readable.

Old Tony Beak's an author you say? Off to Google...

If you think they’re too mushy then the other that springs to mind is Victoria Hislops novels. They’re based usually on true events/locations. the Island was particularly good.

Just night this for my mother in law - she’s 87

Accidental-Duchess (Farmers-Daughter-Belvoir)

Well so he is. And rather popular it seems.

Annoyingly though, I have just remembered asking her if she watched Strictly and she screwed her face up and was very unimpressed with the dumbed down judges and exaggerated pantomime. So I think Anton might be an unwelcome guest.

Marple 12 new stories

Does she like the Richard Osman Thursday Murder Club Books - both the above on Amazon for £10 or less (hardback)

Poetry ?- I received the penguin a poem for every day of the year last year and really enjoyed reading through it - there are various variations

Has she read Anne Glenconner's autobiography Lady in Waiting? I was fascinated. She has also written a sequel I haven't read yet.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/11/2022 22:52

The Mitford Girls by Mary Lovell is a good biography, and she would remember seeing them in the news.

She might also like Crooked Heart by Lissa Evans, and the other two books which complete the series.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/11/2022 22:56

The Five by Hallie Rubenhold might interest her too - if she doesn't want to plough through the book, there's a podcast.

eddiemairswife · 21/11/2022 23:03

She might enjoy the Cazalet books by Elizabeth Jane Howard.

I’ve bought my gran the new Kate Atkinson for Christmas - shrines of gaiety

A gentleman in Moscow is a good read. Also, the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
My in laws liked the 100 year old man who climbed out of a window.
And mil has never seen the programme, but has been liking the bridgerton books.

Yes, she borrowed this from me...Anne Glenconner is something else, what a woman!

This looks good, and half price on Amazon!
