No toys on DS6 list

Hello, my budget for Xmas is £400 for my DS6. He wanted a Nintendo switch which eats up most of that. I’ve bought it tho as it’s what he wanted. His other gifts are pants, Pjs and a new toothbrush (he needs these), and then bath bombs, chocolates, a hair gel, a book, a puzzle, 1 small selection box, colouring in book, new felt tip pens and a football strip (top only, and got it on sale).

We don’t do gifts in our families so he doesn’t get other gifts other than what we give him.

I’ve just realised he basically isn’t getting any toys for Xmas, and I’m worried this is a bit sad at only age 6? But he doesn’t need new toys, as he has plenty, and he doesn’t need a bike or a scooter as he has these.

I don’t really see the problem, your DS will remember this as the year you got him the thing he really wanted even though it’s expensive. Maybe start setting expectations now that his pile may look smaller.
Totally no need to buy presents he doesn’t need or has even asked for, they would most likely be ignored for the switch anyway!

QuackWoof · 19/11/2022 17:31

Thanks, I just needed some reassurance! I don’t want to go over my budget as it’s a lot anyway.

The switch is still a toy, sounds like he’ll be a very happy boy. Do you do stockings?

PuttingDownRoots · 19/11/2022 17:35

Switch (I'm presuming games as well), puzzle, colouring stuff, book... all enjoyable stuff even if not strictly "toys".

QuackWoof · 19/11/2022 18:00

@Winterfires yes I do a stocking, a couple of the things I’ve mentioned will go in there but will get a few other little stocking bits in Tesco with the shopping.

@PuttingDownRoots yes it comes with 3 games.

thanks both, feeling a bit better! I try not to
focus on the gifts but I just know he will compare to
others at school who have extended families that celebrate Xmas so will get lots more.

Pants, PJs, hair gel and toothbrush aren't gifts - they are things he needs, so I would take them out of the budget. What you then have left over buy him a toy or 2. Just what I would do.

BettyBooper · 19/11/2022 18:36

Something I want, something I need, something to wear, something to read. You got it covered!👍

ChristmasCwtch · 19/11/2022 18:38

Smiggle have great Minecraft and HP bits in. Hot Wheels and Jurassic World big with my boys around the same age. Lego is always a favourite.

Agree with a PP that pants, gel, toothbrush and pyjamas aren’t really presents.

Probably should have put that in quote marks. I don't want a Nintedo switch! 🤣

Stompythedinosaur · 19/11/2022 18:43

I think it is fine. The Switch is definitely a toy, as is the puzzle, and I guess he will use the hair gel for playing with.

20weeksandcounting2023 · 19/11/2022 18:51

A switch is a very extravagant present for a 6 year old - personally not an age I would buy one for so I wouldn't feel bad about not getting them anything else

maltravers · 19/11/2022 18:53

How about getting a bundle of second hand plastic dinosaur or dragon figures from EBay too, they’ll be fine after a quick wash..? I can see bundles for about £5. It seems a shame not to encourage imaginative play while he’s still that age.

Jaybird43 · 19/11/2022 18:55

I think that sounds perfect @QuackWoof - your DS will be thrilled with the Switch (my DS was the same age when he got his). What about going into wilkos or something and getting a game of operation / connect 4 or something as a spare game that you can all play?

Lalalaleeloo · 19/11/2022 18:56

He needs a new toothbrush but you're going to wait a month and a half to give it to him?

Stripedbag101 · 19/11/2022 18:56

I agree that the tooth brush and pjs aren’t presents - why not get some Lego for that value? Some great Black Friday deals on amazon at the moment

Stripedbag101 · 19/11/2022 18:57

And pants!! You can’t get a six year old pants for Christmas 😂. My parents used to do this when I was small and I remember thinking What a waste of wrapping paper

QuackWoof · 19/11/2022 19:02

😂 sorry just to be clear he doesn’t need a new toothbrush just now, but he will by Xmas. Also it’s not a normal one it’s a fancy character electric one that he has been wanting.

Holy moly that’s a lot of money although I can see why if they’re the only gifts he gets. For comparison DD will get some books, a handbag, a hairdresser’s head with the accessories and a pony ride on Christmas Eve at the local riding school (horses are her current interest). I mean books and a handbag aren’t really ‘toys’ but at 3 her interests now tend to be dressing up, stories, colouring etc rather than your Vtech type stuff.

MolliciousIntent · 19/11/2022 19:10

That's a HUGE amount of gifts and a tonne of money.

mam0918 · 19/11/2022 19:19

Apart from the switch virtually non of those things are gifts - pants, PJs, toothbrush especially as are needed are your basic job as a parent to provide.

A football shirt walks the line, I personally wouldnt class it as a gift though... other football merch maybe but the clothes have just been clothes to us.

The rest sounds like basic stocking fillers (I mean the puzzle and book could be gifts I guess, depends what they are as 'puzzle' is pretty broad) and why does a 6 year old need hair gel?

I mean a switch is a great and expensive gift if thats what he wants but I would by a few more toys and not use pants/toothbrush/PJs/hair gel as gifts.

Some suggestions of cheaper toys for a 6 year old could be things like those jurrasic park fossil eggs, smelly fruity balls (with the coil spring) have always been popular with my kids, fun and crazy board games, nerf style guns, marble run, hotwheels style tracks etc...

QuackWoof · 19/11/2022 19:19

Hmm I could get him more Lego or more plastic dinosaurs but honestly he already has lots of these. Lego isn’t a bit interest for him and how many plastic dinosaurs does one boy need?!?! Would happily get him another board game tho as he loves them and a new one is always good.

Tbh the PJS and pants aren’t in the £400 budget, if I add up all the above it’s over £400 already but that’s just my rough budgets. He doesn’t need the PJs or pants immediately and I wanted to bulk out his stack a little. The pants would go in the bottom of his stocking so wouldn’t be wrapped. Would wrap the PJS tho to add to his pile to open. I just hate the idea of buying him stuff he doesn’t need that I know he won’t look at again after January. Could def add a board game and a couple of extra books tho.

Ds8 is getting a switch lite this year & game. He’s wanted one a while but despite the cost still getting a toy to go with his farm that he wants along with one or two other bits and sock sized stocking. I would feel a bit sad if he didn’t get a toy at his age but that’s me. As with others I don’t do pants, toothbrush etc at Christmas as it’s something I should do anyway should never be a gift. Is there a small Lego set, vehicle or toy that he’s interested in that you could get.

Winterfires · 19/11/2022 19:29

My DS is getting a switch but he is 10

ReginaGeorgeismyname · 19/11/2022 19:33

The switch is a toy. Sounds plenty to me. I disagree with the posters about the toothbrush and pj's not being gifts...mine love getting bits like this with their favourite characters on.

ReginaGeorgeismyname · 19/11/2022 19:34

Although I do think hair gel I wouldn't give as a gift.
