Skincare gifts for 10 year old girl

ofmybloodyself · 19/11/2022 12:49

My daughter has dry sensitive skin and needs to keep it moisturised. But she is desperate for 'skincare' products for Christmas. Even astral and nivea make her skin flare.

Can anyone recommend anything that is very gentle for sensitive young skin but still feels gift-like? Doesn't just have to be moisturiser. She was looking at masks, exfoliating scrubber-things and face rollers, all of which feel completely inappropriate for her.

Thanks!

Cerave is great for sensitive skin and reasonably priced . You can find it in most big Boots.

This range is wonderful for tweens' sensitive skin:

La Roche Posay Toleriane is excellent for sensitive skin. You can get little gift sets at Christmas.
Avoid anything marketed at "teen" skin as that invariably means it'll have salicylic acid in it for spots and hormonal breakouts.

JuneOsborne · 19/11/2022 13:32

Yy to La Roche Posay, the best stuff for her type of skin and they do gift sets. There are lots of different ranges, but again, yy to the toleraine range.

If she wants a jade roller, I can't see the harm in that. Maybe a nice big mirror to go with it, and nice hair bands to keep the hair off her face wil she applies it all?

And sheet masks are nice and make good gifts.
Lucky girl, nice to be able to experiment!

Thank you so much everyone. All super helpful! I've always just slapped Diprobase on (also have dry skin) and got on with it. Skincare was never my thing. I'm having to get educated... you're all wonderful. Sheet masks - who knew they existed?!
@JuneOsborne I see our usernames were similarly inspired! 😊

In case it might help your DD, btw, though not exactly a 'gift' in fancy packaging, this rapid-relief serum was a lifesaver for 11 year old's eczema soreness. Especially cooling straight from the kitchen fridge.

Cerave products- super fashionable for her age group and really good quality

Iwasjustasking · 19/11/2022 13:56

Simple is really good for that age and do a massive range without any nasties in it. For face rollers, sheet masks etc primark, they are brilliant!

ofmybloodyself · 19/11/2022 14:08

Right, I'm going for a combo of cerave, laroche posay, sheet masks and jade roller. If anyone can think of anything else lovely for her, keep the ideas coming. Thank you all😍

And I'll look at simple too!

My daughter has used La Roche Posay since her early teens , she has very sensitive skin and a strange form of dermatitis and it works well for her .

lookingformyleopard · 19/11/2022 15:23

I have dry sensitive skin too. I've never got on with Simple but I find The ordinary really good. They're properly fragrance free and really gentle. It depends what your daughter is looking for, they're a company that make lots of individual ingredient formulas for layering.
This is a set of cleanser, moisturiser and hydrating serum

And I layer the squalane underneath the moisturiser too

Oh yes, definitely masks. Look at some of the Korean ones- I think Look Fantastic do some, so cute.

When I was about 11 my mum taught me how to "cream" my face (which meant cleansing it) and bought me some Nivea lotion etc and a set of Mary Quant make up. Was probably one of my best Christmas presents ever.

Avene and la roche posay are brands for sensitive skin ( even oily sensitising or dry sensitive skin)

ofmybloodyself · 08/12/2022 01:11

Thanks all, I also have v v v sensitive skin myself and, thanks to this thread, have discovered a couple of new brands and products so double thank you :)

I use dermalogica (the mildest face wash) on my face as I have super sensitive skin. It is expensive but it’s good.
i think I’ll give a couple of these on this thread a try too though.

There is no point overspending if you cannot afford those products once she has run out. Skin care should not be for Christmas, it's for life. I have to say, my two would be pissed off at getting everyday items as presents, regardless of cost. Special items, like Arden rescue 24 hour stuff, fair enough, but cleanser, moisturiser, SPF = no.

You need to buy her an affordable regime that she can rely upon you repurchasing. Cerave can be slightly expensive if you're on a budget, but if you can afford it long-term, then that's a good start.

Otherwise, superdrug own brands are good. Then there's also Aldi. Like I said, the issue here is that her skin needs a constant regime to manage its needs.

Thanks @CinnamonJellyBeans, all valid points if aimed at someone else but you seem to be talking to me.

So.... firstly, as I mentioned, she and I have sensitive skin. We have a condition called ichthyosis, so the vast majority of products that claim to be sensitive really don't work for me. Given her young age, I want to be particularly careful with her.

Secondly, she has asked for these sorts of things, they are at the top of her Christmas list to Santa, so whilst I appreciate it may be a dull present for you, it won't be for her.

Thirdly, I do have a high level of disposable income so maintaining the regime if it all works for her will be manageable.

So thanks for the input, though I'm not sure it was the most thoughtful post here.

Sorry, if I came across as snippy and know it all, but TBF, you didn't give all the relevant info that would allow us to recommend safe but nice products.

For ichthyosis, I think you'd be better off staying away from high-street products and continuing to use anything that your GP has recommended, or on prescription for her basic regime.

I can now see that she's probably a bit fed up of having to use uninviting pump action pots that look like a pharmacy. Have you considered one of those organic homemade companies, who do lovely packaging and coloured bottles? They can probably make something lovely and lavish looking, but still is safe for her skin. Quite pricey though.

You could even try making some beautiful and safe products yourself and bottling them in apothecary type bottles, with hand-written labels. I made some lovely lanolin and rosewater toner for DD1, who is senstive skinned and flares up when she applies some topical products. I also use a lot of shea butter as moisturiser and make a lot of my own skin, face and haircare. The two companies I use are Naturally Thinking and Bristol Botanicals, who sell everything.

Floralnomad · 10/12/2022 10:01

As I said upthread my daughter uses La Roche Posay and obviously we buy it as required but she puts various bits on her Christmas and birthday lists because she never actually wants much and it’s something that she appreciates that her Nan etc can get fairly easily .

ofmybloodyself · 11/12/2022 14:27

Thanks @CinnamonJellyBeans, appreciate you coming back with good grace. I didn't mention the condition because she doesn't have a prescription. Like me, she just slathers herself in Diprobase . But whereas I've never given a rat's bum about skincare products she is super keen. I gave her some Nivea and it brought her skin out in such a rash that she needed meds to settle it down. Anyway, I need to find a balance between 'exciting' products and super sensitive stuff. I've gone for a mix of brands including some Dandydill stuff which is packaged in a nice gifty way, and a lovely 'makeup' headband. I'm as sure as I can be that she'll be thrilled with it all. And thanks everyone for all the guidance and suggestions :)
