Advent calendar fillers for a baby

What can I put into an advent calendar for a 6 month old? The boxes are tiny at 3x3x4cm. I brought some socks and hair clips but they are too big and won't fit. So far I have just Christmas themed finger puppets..

You could also (but more gender specific but as you said hair clips I'm guessing girl) buy a sylvanian family kit or some doll house furniture and pieces and put each piece in a drawer with the premise to buying a dollhouse for their birthday / next Christmas

It’s lovely you want to mark this baby’s first Christmas and sorry if this sounds harsh but it’s a really terrible gift. This year baby doesn’t have a clue. Going forward it’s just work for the parents who have to buy crap to fill it with.

teezletangler · 18/11/2022 21:58

I would just give the calendar, for future use. It's a lovely gift on its own, and filling it for a baby is a bit silly.

parietal · 18/11/2022 22:01

most things that are small enough to fit in the drawers are too small for a baby to play with safely.

But @bravelittletiger 's idea about a set of building blocks or similar (duplo?) is a very good one.

thefiddlerselbow · 18/11/2022 22:04

I mean it does depend on the age of the baby and perhaps too young but...

Finger puppets
Socks
Tiny soft toys
Bubbles
More bubbles
First Christmas bib rolled up
Tiny snow storm
Christmas flannel
Books - or a note telling you where the book or other item that's too big for advent calendar is...
I love the pp's idea of catols or rhymes.

Also depends on the size of the advent calendar pockets

Littleguggi · 18/11/2022 22:04

Some great suggestions here thank you! Not sure some people however have understood the dimensions, theres no chance of fitting a book or babygrow into the drawers.

I was gifted one years ago for my DD and have used it every year since, it's more of a display piece than feeling as though I need to fill it with 'crap'. All she wants now is a cheap chocolate advent calendar.

I know for a fact it will be a much appreciated gift, plus it is in addition to the main gift.

I’d buy a tub of quality street or similar and put one in each box for the parents. Presumably if you are buying a present for a 6 month old, the parents are either your sibling or a close friend, so you wouldn’t mind buying them some chocolates.

Have they asked you to buy this or are you doing it of your own back? We were given two (empty ones) when dc1 was a baby. I never used either and buy a cadburys/similar one every year. I know some people are really imaginative with these things, but I am not one of those people.

bravelittletiger · 18/11/2022 22:14

@Littleguggi I get that you wanted to give a thoughtful gift but if it's truly tiny drawers then there probably isn't anything useful or wanted for a 6 month old you can fit into it and even when they are a bit older it's only ever going to fit chocolate.

If it's already been bought and can't be sent back then I think you should use the note idea- each day you can put in either a nursery rhyme, Christmas song or just a little note.

Another idea would be mini photos.

Or another idea- clues...you can do clues and have the presents separately. Or if you can't be arsed with that then just do numbers and wrap up each numbered present separately then you aren't restricted by size.

WonderingWanda · 18/11/2022 22:33

I think that sounds really thoughtful op.
What about those sock and wrist rattles. I think I saw travel sized child's farm shampoo in boots, matchstick monkey teething toy, baby toothbrush, mittens, weaning spoon, Ella's kitchen pouch, weaning snacks, baby finger paints, one of those fabric books, sock ons, bath squirters, bubble mixture. Might get a bit expensive.

piedbeauty · 18/11/2022 22:34

Don't bother! What's the point?? Just more stress over something your baby won't have a clue about.

Save it for when they're a teen.

Littleguggi · 18/11/2022 21:38

Should have said, not for my baby but someone else's, first Christmas so wanted to make it special

Um. I'm not sure I'd have appreciated this gift. Sorry! Maybe the parents want to buy an advent calendar for their dc?

PinkButtercups · 18/11/2022 22:38

My DS was similar age and I got him a book advent calendar we would ready every day.

My mother in law did this for my baby’s first Christmas and I thought it was really kind and lovely. She did a mixture of things for baby/things for us e.g. hotel chocolate chocolates etc for about half of the pockets and then the baby ones had finger puppets, small toys, I’m sure she stuck reindeer headband in one of them as a fun one (but ours were tiny stockings so not sure of the logistics if that would work for you). It was fun and the majority were for the adults and she wants to do it again this year and I’m grateful! So carry on I think it’s a lovely idea, and not something I’d bother to do myself so if someone else is kind enough to do it then I’m happy!

Mezmer · 18/11/2022 22:44

Are you kidding? Just get a pretty pictorial one with colourful Christmas images hiding behind the doors that she can focus her little six month old eyes on and buy yourself some gifts. The gifty element is all for your benefit anyway so you might as well.

inappropriateraspberry · 18/11/2022 22:55

I'd put quotes and sayings in them on paper. Some festive, some about love, family etc. maybe have something more special on the 24th - think how much you would have spent on filling it every day and get something more substantial for the same money. A decoration for the tree, a piece of jewellery for when she's older, clothes etc.

SparkleTart · 18/11/2022 23:45

Teethers, dummies, headbands.coins for the piggy bank. I'd have probably been thrilled with 24 pairs of baby socks! Folded up muslins.

It's a lovely gift. Mumsnet is extremely arsey lately. Pay them no mind..

SparkleTart · 18/11/2022 23:46

Oh yes, agree with PP a Christmas dec. Baby's first Christmas for the 25th

SparkleTart · 18/11/2022 23:50

Oh and you can probably stick a few "playdate with aunty littleguggi" letters. Which is basically free babysitting for the parents and they'll love too
