@Newnamefor2021

Just because I'm curious, how old is your Mum?

But she's much older in some senses as she's pretty disabled, a wheelchair user out of the house.

She's very much the type of person who puts everyone else first. She will spoil anyone and everyone and go without herself (and my dad never makes much effort).

We’re debating between a really high thread count bed sheet as that’s a luxury but so much more comfortable to sleep on or smart hive radiator valves as that will help with heating bills and she’s always complaining that the living room is hotter than the bedroom.

Bluedoritos · 18/11/2022 23:30

Vouchers for her favourite restaurant (well, it's a joint present for her and my dad)

alloutofcareunits · 18/11/2022 23:47

Wide leg velour trousers from M&S, she mentioned her legs being cold and that years ago she had some velour trousers that were warm. I've ordered them from M&S. I'm also going to buy some household items that are heavy E.g. fabric conditioner, 2L coke, aerial liquid which sounds odd but I know she struggles to carry them but hates asking for help so I'll make a hamper then she won't need to ask or try and carry on the bus

Got my mum a personalised calendar, get one every year. A box of Yankee tea lights and some trainers that she loved and they stopped selling them. I found them, told her they were out of stock and then brought them for her for Christmas 😂

Sn0tnose · 19/11/2022 00:01

I got her a coat, which she’s had early because hers was getting a bit knackered. I’ve also got a photo of her and the youngest grandchild where they’re both grinning at each other which she hasn’t seen and didn’t realise was being taken, so I’ll put that in a nice frame. We get her lots of chocolates and nibbley bits that she wouldn’t spend money on herself and then a bag of little things that I know she’ll use and love, but she would never ‘waste’ the money on herself. Just small things like hand cream, hairspray she likes rather than whatever is cheapest etc.

Sisisimone · 19/11/2022 00:35

So far I've bought vouchers for champagne afternoon tea, an oodie, a bracelet, a 12 days of Christmas clarins set and a family photo calendar

GettingStuffed · 19/11/2022 00:39

No mum but a much loved MiL is getting a fleece blanket, she has Alzheimer's and as such feels the cold. She currently uses a blanket that she crocheted years ago and weighs a ton. We've also bought her some Florentines for her stocking so just need those.

A hamper filled with bird feeding bits, including a window feeder for her conservatory and some flutter butter feeders. Also cute metal robin garden ornaments.

A large terrarium I bought pre made from garden centre, but I have added tiny Christmas characters to make a little Christmas scene inside, including a little girl holding hands with a woman. A man holding gifts, a snowman, a postbox, a boy on a sledge. It has tiny Christmas lights and mini bows in the greenery. I got them from a craft store I think they were for decorating a dolls house but they look great. I actually love it and want to keep it myself.
Good chocolate and nice wine too.

Your terrarium sounds gorgeous. I might have to decorate mine now with little festive characters .

An Oodie (Kuddly one) - shes worried about heating bills
A RHS book on container growing as she tried her hand at that this year with varying degrees of success.
2 x glass clowns - she remembers her mum having them in the 70s and has been scouring the charity shops for them. I got them from etsy.

Theatre tickets always go down well
In a previous year I got her a course of horse riding lessons (she'd not ridden in 40 years) went down a storm.

QueefofSheena · 22/11/2022 00:37

I remember those glass clowns!

I’m struggling with mine as she’s in her 90’s, is basically housebound and is rather ‘difficult’. I did think of getting her one of those one cup water boiler things but I’m not sure how easy they are to fill, might be too fiddly for her. I’ve got a wicker basket so I’m going to make up a hamper with bits I know she won’t complain about - hand cream, choc brazils, Dove creams, shelled walnuts etc. Florentines are a good idea, thanks to PP for that.

I'm going to buy someone this, not sure if it will be my mum or my aunt. It's a framed print by a lady with down syndrome. I just love it and it feels like I am supporting someone who will benefit from it, so it makes me feel good!

Magazine subscription. I've done it for a few years and she calls me every month just to say thanks for the Christmas gift!

(We do talk at other times, not just monthly!).

Plus chocs and flowers.

If it makes you feel good but it for yourself

Try to buy things the recipient would like as gifts

My granny has one of the boiling water things. She fills it up using a measuring jug so she doesn't have to move anything I think. She really likes not having to lift the kettle up any more.

CountryCatLady · 22/11/2022 16:38

Struggling myself, outside of the usual stuff like pj's and a bottle of gin.

Going to get her a Jigsaw this year.

They will be going away in the new year so probably do a basket/hamper of travel bits and pieces l. Did this a few years ago for when they went to aus for 6 weeks, and it was a big hit.

Most people I do them for seem to like a home made hamper of bits and pieces, some are food based, some toiletries based and sometimes just a random mix that reflects the recipient interests

KittenCatt · 23/11/2022 17:04

I got my mother a ring from Clogau and a set of Spectrum make-up brushes. For her stocking, I’ve got her a moisturiser Turkish delight, her favourite bar of soap and body wash 😊

Puddywoodycat · 23/11/2022 21:09

When you say low maintenance is that genuine Or She doesn't wanted to be a fuss if the later then I would do something she can't get out of.
Beautiful cashmere jumper or afternoon tea voucher..

ShortColdandGrey · 24/11/2022 17:37

Mine wants a nice cozy jumper that covers her bum.

notforonesecond · 24/11/2022 19:23

A few bits but my favourite is one of those “you to me” books off Amazon. You can get mum, dad, grandma/nana/whatever ones.

It’s a book to fill out with info about her and her life and stuff. Things I might not know. Things my children will be able to read about her one day.

My dad died last year and I’d give anything to have a book like this that he’d written for me.

I really hope she fills it out. Even if she doesn’t let me read it until she’s gone.

She wouldn't go. She is disabled, in a wheelchair. Unless it involves the grandchildren, because she would do anything for them, she just doesn't go. We have wasted a lot of things like that. It's very difficult for her as she's in a lot of Pain and completely dependant on others, and since covid she has increased anxieties. I d taken her a few time to get her nails done but her hair is terrible but she needs to make decisions there as I've tried to book but they need to know what she wants done.
