Assuming they arent newborns then just take them out and let them pick.

machanicalmovement · 18/11/2022 13:56

Yes, take them to Poundland and wrap up the funny things they buy for people.

NoNamesLeft234678 · 18/11/2022 14:12

How old are they? My plan from next year (he's only 14 months) is to take him to a pound shop and let him pick something for everyone 🤷‍♀️😅

SuperlativeOxymoron · 18/11/2022 14:56

We made Christmas decorations last year (I made salt dough, he cut out the shapes, cooked and he painted them, I wrote the year on the back) this year I've been super lazy and ordered all the extra bits that come with the Christmas cards from nursery, no thinking involved.

I do like the pound land idea!!!!

Stompythedinosaur · 18/11/2022 15:44

The DC give photo calendars to grandparents. Sometimes there are things like tea towels with their art on sold by the school as a fundraiser so we might give those.

Sometimes we make things - they make peppermint creams last year.

reluctantbrit · 18/11/2022 16:55

Salt dough organments
aprons painted with fabric paint
painting wooden ornament/tea light holders
pottery painting
photo calendar. But we get one where you glue the pictures on and give it with 3-4 pictures and give them more pictures 3x a year. Worked very well especially when DD was tiny.

What are you doing? Do you have money to burn? Kids don’t give presents to adults until they have their own money - otherwise it’s a nonsense where you are actually buying gifts twice for same adult. Even school photos are not gifts form them- you’re paying for it. not It is utterly meaningless and virtue signally,

if they want to “give” something then get them to make something - a card at least. As they get older maybe do a batch of homemade sweets that can be put in a nice jar they could decorate. Or get some unpainted mugs/plates and paint for ceramics and get them to do a “best game/gf “ design.

when they’re old enough to earn money they can make the decision themselves what to buy. To be honest I’d be horrified a GC of mine wasting their money on a gift for me but still appreciate a nice text or whatapp message even with some meme or equivalent just for me. (Like all young adults since 2000s they don’t know what paper is to send physical cards 🤣🤣🤣)

carefulcalculator · 18/11/2022 17:05

We make things. When they were young they made a decoration each year.

until they have their own money... so adults?

Teaching kids to think about these things is part of teaching them not to be selfish, life isnt one sided but I can see how people grow up with entitlement if this is how people view things.

Bogglebrain · 18/11/2022 18:04

Socks! We buy novelty socks (with a theme) to give from DC.

Leeds2 · 18/11/2022 18:05

Something from one of those paint your own pottery places eg a mug.
Key ring with picture of the DC on the fob.
Take them to Lush and let them choose a bath bomb, or soap.
Home made fudge.

That's what we used to do!! It's brilliant!! But let someone else take them do you get a wonderful present too!! My friend and I used to swap kids for the shop and wrap experience!

Hm, DD normally told us that she wanted to make a gift. Should I have said "sorry, DD, you need to wait until you have finished your education. Sorry, your grandparents will be dead by then most likely".

It's fun, it's teaching children to think of others and that gifting is a ritual which brings joy for both parties.

Ronnie1234 · 18/11/2022 19:55

Ah thanks all!

The Poundland trip sounds like a good idea then!! Could result in some comical presents 😂

We've always bought off the children
They receive gifts off the grandparents & aunties so feel it justified to give back

Dd lets dgs choose, he's very astute for a three year old. This year he's chosen a Robin christmas bauble for the tree from the garden centre. He's obviously noticed I have various birds about the house because he told dd "Gangan will love this because she loves birds" Grandad has got a specific pair of socks because he noticed once that he had a hole in one of his.

IggyAce · 18/11/2022 21:05

How old are they? Since around age 5 I’ve just taken my dcs to Poundland or home bargains and let them pick something for each person on their list. They are now teens and we still do this, they love it they have chosen some lovely and interesting things over the years.

Did you read properly…I said if they want to give something then make something.

it’s parents buying stuff and “pretending” it’s the kids that have given it that is plain daft

clearly you just want to part read, jump to some conclusion and jump straight back the sarcastic put down
🙄🤦‍♀️

It also gives you a chance to see how their mind works and how they think about people, very funny results.

but no one is pretending anything.

Clearly you have not read the thread where pretty much every poster has said the child choose for themselves.

You made a point of saying until the child has their OWN money which is utterly ridiculous... sorry you are just now realising your views are not the norm, maybe let your kids by granny a gift this year.
