McVities Tunis cake - what's the best alternative?

Does anyone else really miss the old McVities Tunis Cake? I used the love them, the chocolate and icing in particular were amazing and the madeira cake was very nice too.

Is there a modern equivalent, or maybe even a particularly good recipe?

I'm surprised that McVities stopped making them bearing in mind their popularity.

This is the nearest warrensbakery.co.uk/product/traditional-tunis-cake/ but it’s £££ so hopefully the M&S one will be good enough! www.ocado.com/products/m-s-tunis-cake-525808011

I made this one Mary Berry's Tunis cake and it was really good; not difficult to do

pippistrelle · 18/11/2022 11:13

I've never heard of a Tunis cake and now I'm wondering if this is some sort of weird aberration, given your assertion that they're popular, OP. And there are websites assuring me that it's a British tradition. I know want to ask everyone I know if it's just me!

Anyway, M and S appear to sell them, available on Ocado. I'm going to have to buy one, aren't I?

I've never heard of them either. They look nice though(if you bin the marzipan.)

@pippistrelle @FormerCarer Showing my age here but Tunis cakes were popular for about ten years from 1973 until the early 1980s. I used to love a slive or three at Christmas but the original manufacturer, McVities, has resisted calls to bring them back for some weird reason. Here's some info from somebody's blog page ten years ago:

correction: slive = slice !

Why can't posts be edited?

Also never heard of Tunis cake but sounds lovely. I’m not a fan of Christmas cake so I might have a go at the Mary Berry recipe. Thanks OP!

PositivelyGlowing · 18/11/2022 15:18

@tothesea No problem. No idea if any of the recipes are any good. It's very baffling why McVities consistently resist manufacturing them again, I guess they don't like money .......

Lemon and chocolate and marzipan?
Think I'll pass, thank you.
Adding a voice to say I've never heard of it either.

I’m the right vintage to have also loved Tunis cake as a child, and have made it successfully many times since. Just use a classic Madeira cake recipe, using butter, ice with a thick layer of chocolate ganache, pipe circles of decorations with yellow and pink coloured buttercream (butter and icing sugar) and buy or make a marzipan apple, orange and pear for the middle. Very easy and very popular even with those too young to have known the real thing.

Thanks very much, how do you think yours compares to the McVities original?

Last year we bought one from Tesco, it wasn't available until early December though. They don't seem too difficult to make

Snooks1971 · 19/11/2022 18:09

I cannot understand how I have never heard of these?! I was born in 71 and so perfect timing?

Have never liked sickly buttercream cakes and this looks perfect! Every day is a school day! Thank you OP!

Very similar, as far as I can remember. Probably nicer, if anything, as I remember the anxiety with the real thing when the chocolate was thinner on some slices than others, and when you make it yourself you can ensure a thick and even layer!

Here is a good value Tunis cake to buy which you can get delivered anywhere in the UK. Had one last year and it was lovely. https://www.thecornishfoodboxcompany.co.uk/tunis-cake-small.html

God I used to love a Tunis cake. It was my dads birthday cake as it was so close to Xmas. I've hunted high and low for years trying to find it. Really wish Mcvities would bring it back

PositivelyGlowing · 25/10/2023 14:11

I just cannot fathom why McVities won't bring back their Tunis Cake. Don't they want to make money or something?!?

Anyhow, in the meantime that Tunis Cake from the The Cornish Food Box Company looks great and as the company has many excellent reviews I'm going to order one for December. :-)

Tunis cake update - so I bought a small one from the Cornish Food Box Company, this one:

https://www.thecornishfoodboxcompany.co.uk/tunis-cake-small.html

(they also do a large).

Just tried it and, well, I'm not at all impressed! But here's a 'review':

Let's work from the top down:

The marzipan fruits are okay - they taste of marzipan after all, can't really go wrong with that, but they're not as firm as they should be.

The icing is extremely sweet, not only that but it's very soft - the icing on the original McVitie's Tunis Cake was of such a consistency that it was possible to break it off in pieces yet it wasn't hard.

The chocolate ....... completely wrong as far as the taste goes and it's a bit too hard. The amount spread on the top is also rather thin.

The madeira cake itself is in fact the best part, in the sense that it tastes very nice with a good crumbly texture. HOWEVER despite this it's nothing like the madeira that made up the original cake; that madeira was in fact quite firm and bland in taste and was easily the least palatable part of the original (but it was of course edible).

So there you go. My score? 5/10 (and that's mostly for the madeira cake).

Some will say that my memory of the original has changed over the years but I would strongly dispute that - there are some things that, for me at least, are unchanged and one part of those are my memories of certain tastes and smells. Remember that smell and taste are linked and are excellent memory triggers.

Others will say that my overall taste has changed - not so, I've always had a sweet tooth for example and I still have.

Ultimately of course people's tastes differ, some may try this cake and find it wonderful. I hope so but as can be seen from my review it's mostly not for me.

I hope this is useful.

BTW, if anyone has any experience of a modern Tunis Cake, either shop bought or home made, please let us know.

I was born in '68 and grew up in West Yorks. I don't remember Tunis Cakes at all. I do, however, remember Harlequin Cakes, but didn't really like them as they had (imo) a weird, coffee-ish icing.

Sorry your newly purchased Tunis Cake wasn't a patch on your fond memories of yore! @PositivelyGlowing

dlanorsmada · 26/12/2024 19:13

It's been stated that Tunis cakes were popular from 1973 for ten years. Well, pre-supermarket times, I sold dozens of these at Christmas time from 1958 working for the Pearks Stores chain.
