Planning on doing OH a box of different red wines now I'm not a wine drinker and need advice on some "nice" ones from wherever looking for up to £20 a bottle.

He likes Casillero Del Diablo Merlot from tescos so any ideas?

This is glorious.

@Onceuponawhileago I don’t necessarily agree - a chilenan melody isn’t too jammy or light bodied so I don’t think it’s too far a stretch to enjoy a fuller bodied US Pinot or a Malbec. I don’t think anyone has mentioned anything too obscure/difficult/
savoury or heavily oaked. Often people stick to what they know they like but enjoy broadening their horizons. (WSET DIPLOMA qualified)

@BellaEllaWella
I think a US Pinot would prob not hit the spot either. Id play safe and stick to what he likes. Malbec would maybe work. Be interesting to see if he really liked Ribero del Duero or similar- would open up lots of possibilities. So many lovely wines out there now. Well done on the Diploma- hard!

Ribera del Duero...fat fingerds

Onceuponawhileago · 17/11/2022 22:03

Fingers 🙈

Why not get him a Wine Society membership, as you get £20 off first order, then choose one of their mix 6 cases. Their wine is all great, so much better than the supermarket wine for the price you pay. Then he can use the membership in the future

@Onceuponawhileago don’t worry about fat fingers - I said chilenan melody for Chilean merlot!!
I’ve been drinking beaujolais nouveau today (it’s release day) and an Austrian Blaufrankisch - neither of which I’d probably recommend widely but I do think people should be encouraged to expand their tastes beyond the big brands wherever possible. I think people can be surprised by what they like and enjoy. So many wines!

Thelonelychicken · 17/11/2022 23:01

Thank you so many great suggestions. I'm liking the idea of a wine subscription then he can use it as and when

A New Zealand Pinot noir, a château nerf de pape and a nice Spanish Rioja would be a nice selection
