Apologies if this has been asked before. I have 5 nieces / nephews all over 18. In the past I’ve bought vouchers for local independent cafes / cinema vouchers. Looking for other ideas. Thank you.

What's your budget?

Lulu1919 · 17/11/2022 06:53

Book token
Amazon voucher
Voucher for say Waitrose that would cover one of the Dine In meal deals

sashh · 17/11/2022 06:54

I've bought a couple of people coins, uncirculated with the new king's face on them.

I'm not a royalist but it's more about the history.

I was about to suggest a m&s voucher that covers the cost of their dine in meals.

£11 for a 50p coin?!

nicknamehelp · 17/11/2022 07:04

Bottle of wine, or beer.

Spicypies · 17/11/2022 07:15

Bottle of nice wine or nice chocolate. Neither is very creative, but it’s better than some random gift they’ll never use.

Alexandernevermind · 17/11/2022 07:21

I always just put £20 in a card, but after yet another year of no quick texts to say thank you, and crap or no gifts for my own teens from their aunts in return, I'm not bothering. It cost me £140 last year for my own dc to get a Dove and a Linx gift set.

£11 for a 50p coin?!

50p coins go up in value quite quickly, the Paddington ones are already selling for 4 times their face value. And that is for a coin you could get in your change today.

The brilliant uncirculated coins are only available for a short time.

A silver jubilee crown, face value 25p sells for more than £150.

I had no idea! Thank you! I might get a couple of people one as an investment!

Dinoteeth · 17/11/2022 07:52

I do some sort of 3 for 2 boots toiletry set and money in a card.
Don't see the point in vouchers that restricts spending a huge percentage of vouchers are never spent

dancemom · 17/11/2022 07:54

I'd much rather a voucher than a toiletry set I won't use.

Agree. Vouchers restrict spending to a particular shop yes, but buying a toiletry set restricts you even more to that one specific item. And loads of them go unused too.

Dinoteeth · 17/11/2022 08:51

I kind of agree about the toilerys but I'm sure my student nephews will use anything and it gives them something to unwrap rather than just the money.

sashh · 17/11/2022 09:01

@brighterthanthemoon

I have some pre decimal coins, I don't think they are worth much, they are just coins that were in circulation.

I'm mid 50s so I just about remember decimalisation, but for a lot of my childhood we still used pre decimal coins but there are a lot of adults who have never seen a British coin without the Queen on them.

carefulcalculator · 17/11/2022 09:03

I send cash or voucher (if there is a place I know they want a voucher for) usually with something very small like a decoration or socks.

I can clearly recall that all through my late teens/early twenties I was happy to receive cash!

carefulcalculator · 17/11/2022 09:04

gives them something to unwrap rather than just the money most young adults prefer money, unless they are wealthy, IMO.

A much better investment is old coins, the new ones are much less rare and don't increase in value in the same way.
I'm close with someone who runs a very successful coin business so I know what I'm talking about...

BacktoSlack · 17/11/2022 09:12

I normally get my adult nieces a book and a bar of posh chocolate. Luckily my local bookshop sells both, along with nice cards, so minimal effort and a hopefully nice gift, plus I'm helping an independent.
polishes halo

sashh · 17/11/2022 09:35

@BacktoSlack

I'm sure you are right, but at the moment there are no King Charles III in circulation.

In 2020 there were about 70,000,000 50p coins of three designs struck, I can't see there being anywhere near that number of Charles III 2022.

There have only ever been a few Edward VIII coins, in fact I think the coins that did go into circulation were released by mistake.

Likewise there was a year when the only 2p coins were those in sets of the various denominations.

I'd be interested in your friends estimation.

And it is a bit of history.

This is the situation here too! Never receive any thanks. DH moans every year. Oldest is 24 now - what age do you stop buying?
Budget, no more than £15. Really like to ideas of covering an M&S dine in meal, especially if I write in the card that it’s for that purpose.

OP posts:
Dinoteeth · 17/11/2022 19:35

If they don't even send a text to say thanks then I'd stop at 18 or 21. You could be very generous and stop when they are no longer in full-time education.

Floralnomad · 17/11/2022 20:59

Just buy them each a £5/6 box of chocolates and don’t give it any more thought .
