I've reposted from gaming, incase anyone could help.

My 7 year old has asked for a Pokémon game for his switch from Santa.
Does anyone know which would be best? From what I've googled it's either Let's Go Pikachu or Pokemon Snap.
He isn't great at reading and doesn't have much patience if it helps! Thanks.

Pokémon Snap he will probably find boring, it's all about taking the best photos at a zoo, you are in a cart and follow the same path each time so can't do much.

Not being a good reader rules out most of the main games.

There's also Pokken tournament dx, which is a fighting game, you play as the Pokémon, not a whole lot of reading;

My DD likes Let's go Pikachu and my DS learnt to read when we refused to read any more switch lines

Both Pokémon snap and let’s go were massive fails with my DS8 he found them to simple and boring. However we have had hours of playing on Pokémon sword, great value and loads to do. We have Pokémon violet on pre order now.

There are more Pokemon games than those on the switch! There's also:
Sword and Shield
Diamond and Pearl
Legends of Arceus
Mystery Dungeons DX

The latest one, Scarlet and Violet, is out on Friday.

If your DC isn't great at reading, Pokemon games are probably not the best TBH. My 9YO has loved the Pokemon games since he was about 5YO. 7YO hates them because they're not fast enough for him.

I would get the brand new one coming out this week - Scarlet or Violet

BretonBlue · 15/11/2022 12:29

Sword and Shield (from 2019) or Scarlet and Violet (released this Friday). You have to choose one or the other in either case and this affects the Pokémon who appear in the game.

frenchnoodle · 15/11/2022 12:34

The main games mention here Sword / Shied, Scarlet / Violet require being able to read.

Worth looking at some screen grabs to see if he could cope - the text is broken down but you do need to read to follow the story. If that’s a deal-breaker then consider Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which is a rare example of a Pokémon game with voice acting.

Thank you all for the replies! I'll have to YouTube them maybe to see some game play to see if he will cope. It's all he has asked Santa for so feel I should at least get him one to try. Although Pokemon Snap hasn't been recommended much does that have a lot of reading? If there isn't much game play could he just tootle about on it? Thanks again.

I think Snap is boring TBH. My son is a massive Pokémon fan and Sword/Shield has been his favourite so far.

Would you consider watching the trailers on You Tube with him and get him to pick one ('to help Santa choose')?

frenchnoodle · 16/11/2022 19:24

Pokémon Snap isn't really a game, it's like a theme park ride, but with all the fun of it being a live attraction removed. You are in a cart you can't control, driving through a zoo which doesn't change on each playthrough.

The aim is to take photos.

If you are prepared to sit with your child and help him read the text boxes sword and shield is best, it has days and days of story to play through. Then at other times he can backtrack wandalk around and fight Pokémon and things without you.
