Help my 5 year old has asked Santa for a Toy Hubble Space Telescope!

My space mad 5 year old has asked Santa for a toy Hubble Space Telescope and I went along with this great idea! All he's asked for is this and a telescope. Well, I don't think they exist! Please help me, I've searched everywhere and all I can find is a £200 2,500 piece Lego set! Is this really my only option?

Quick google of “Hubble telescope model” brings up options from £11 - £30. There’s a paper crafty version on Amazon. Obviously they aren’t toys but models that are more for display. I’d go with something like that.

CrispyTofu · 14/11/2022 20:38

@LimeCheesecake thank you for looking, that's all i could find too, he really wants a toy rather than something he has to make and the models all look a bit flimsy for a 5 year old. I guess if there isn't one I'll have to go for a craft substitute. I was just hoping I'd missed something..........

The Lego Space shuttle comes with a small Hubble space telescope with it. Here are the instructions (the telescope is bags 1-3).

I haven't checked all the way through but I think it might be reasonably affordable to buy the bricks individually from the Lego website, and then box them up
with a printout of the instructions. If you have a decent Lego selection already you might have some of the necessary pieces. You'd have to do something creative to make the solar panels though, and you might need to do a few creative alterations with the display stand.

IWOOT has a NASA telescope for £29.99.

Etsy has astronomy sets which look great with stickers, things to make and wooden constellation spotters.

Couldn’t see any toy Hubble telescopes suitable for a 5 yr old. Etsy had a 3d printed model that came in 6 parts but still looked a bit delicate.

Perhaps some Hubble stickers? There were some on Amazon for £3.99.

trampoline123 · 14/11/2022 20:58

Why don't you say something like...Santa contacted me to say he wasn't sure what you mean, where did you see it or can you show me

GetOffTheRoof · 14/11/2022 20:59

So he want something that works as a telescope and something that looks like the actual Hubble that he can play imagination games with?

SugarCookieMonster · 14/11/2022 21:02

Also the Science museum has lots of cool kids NASA stuff and even a flight suit.

MarcelEtCeleste · 14/11/2022 21:03

This is brilliant! 😁

My DC liked the Professor Astro Cat books.

He’s five. I’d say it’s time to get out a loo roll tube, some tinfoil and a couple of pieces of cardboard.

Thank you, we have a telescope and lots of other space related gifts for him. It's really just the Hubble that we need.....

This is an amazing idea! I can't believe I didn't think of it myself! A definite back up if no toy is found. Thank you so much for this and for linking the instructions Smile

No, he would like a telescope - this we have. He would also like a toy of the Hubble Space Telescope

@CrispyTofu

My pleasure! I always hope to be the one that solves these mystery hunts! I like a challenge…

KenCoff · 14/11/2022 22:17

Well you're going to have to build your own! Better get cracking, you've got 6 weeks

Keroppi · 14/11/2022 22:17

What a cool obsession! Just looking on Reddit - you need to commission a 3D printer!

Better start sourcing him a James Webb early for next year
