DD 11 has asked for a beauty fridge for her bedroom to keep all her lotions and potions on since January!!

I have said no all the way throughout the year but am starting to soften as we get closer to Christmas.

I had a couple of concerns, she had said she wanted to put a couple of snacks in there and I wasn’t sure (as she is a bit of a snacker) I wanted to encourage food in her bedroom but mainly I wasn’t sure how safe they were, to have running throughout the night…

Has anyone bought one for DC and has any advice or any reviews of which to go for.

Environmentally terrible to produce and wasteful to run, fire risk and adding energy cost at a bad time for it. Plus, while I think it's absolutely fine for an 11 year old to look after her skin - wish I'd worn a moisturiser with sunscreen daily from that age! - having enough for a fridge is actively encouraging a pretty obsessive approach to beauty, more than just letting her spend pocket money how she wants and buying her some face masks.

Can you compromise with some kind of fancy tupperware box for her to keep things safely in the fridge, and something else for her collection?

This is how I feel too, I couldn’t get past the environmental aspect. Stuff like this is depressing landfill fodder. I’d talk her through it on sustainability grounds. At that age they’ve learned a bit about environmental issues, so she should get it I think. See if together you can come up with alternative idea for storage that she’d be happy with?

And also, ime even small fridges make all sorts of weird noises that I can imagine might really be irritating if you’re trying to sleep. So I would be concerned about it being in her room for that reason too.

I had never even heard of this before this thread! This has to be a gimmick as surely the only places that could possibly need them are professional salons?

Acheyknees · 13/11/2022 20:10

I've never heard of a beauty fridge. Do certain lotions have to be kept in a fridge?

I've never needed to keep my skincare products in a fridge. Presumably this is a new fad?

MrsMontyD · 13/11/2022 20:10

No one needs one, they're definitely a gimmick and definitely a waste of electricity but I'm sure all our dc have something that falls into those categories. Except those perfect parents you only find online.

They're no more likely to burst into flames in a bedroom than anywhere else in the house, assuming they're kept in an appropriate place, so on a shelf for example not under a floordrobe. Add a smoke detector near it maybe? Make sure there's a socket available , dc are great for overloading extension cables with chargers. The usual fire safety stuff.

SatinHeart · 13/11/2022 20:11

Beauty products is one thing but I'd seriously question whether they get cold enough to safely refrigerate snacks. Beer and wine fridges generally don't get cold enough to store food, so I'd be suspicous of a beauty fridge.

A fridge should be 4-8 degrees C if it has food in.

Lovemylittlebear · 13/11/2022 20:12

Hmmmm I’ve never heard of that before so I have no views on them…but if there is a fire risk or not economical etc…what about some sort of lovely storeage system for her to put her beauty items into the main fridge downstairs. Then she can get her box/ basket straight out the fridge and put out on her desk upstairs before putting back in fridge later?

I might look for something like this for myself as I have a couple of oils/serums that are supposed to be kept in the fridge x

MrsMontyD · 13/11/2022 20:12

If she's really into skincare a Caroline Hirons kitbag is very cool, especially the camo one if you can find one.

jtaeapa · 13/11/2022 20:12

Loads of youtubers have them so I can see why she'd want one.

I'm 44 and have never put anything on my skin. Washed in baby soap in the shower. That's it. I look like an average 44yo. No better, no worse. It's all a load of shit IMO.

CanYouFeelMyHeart · 13/11/2022 20:13

My 12 year old would love this! She uses a face roller and eye mask that she keeps in the main fridge.

Expensive though, and I think I'd worry about extra fire risk.

canyoutoleratethis · 13/11/2022 20:14

Jesus, has the world really come to this? Children so obsessed with their appearance they want a fridge to store all their 'lotions and potions'. Seriously, who buys their child a beauty fridge?!?!

AHelpfulHand · 13/11/2022 20:15

I’ve got one as my bedroom is the attic and it’s roasting in summer. With the hot temps summer just gone, my products turned into a milky mess. I’ve had it afew months now, I’m not sure why they’re more of a fire risk than anything else in the household?

They do collect water in the bottom of them though, which needs wiping out every few days.

milkysmum · 13/11/2022 19:24

Just had a Google, they are only tiny little things, not exactly going to get stocked full of snacks. Probably just a cute gimmick. My 13 year old would likely love one on her dressing table.

So it's just unnecessary consumption for the sake of consumption?

Great, can't see any downside to the human race carrying on with that....

RatSlave · 13/11/2022 20:17

I've got one in my room full of cans of Dr Pepper for me to drink as I spend a lot of time in here. It's very quiet and costs fuck all to run. Mines been going for over a year now and cost £30 from Amazon.

It's fun, did you never put on your mums make up when you were little? It's just how my daughter likes to chill by herself - she doesn't wear make up really but she does really like taking care of her skin.

Shocking and terrible stuff though, apparently.

brighterthanthemoon · 13/11/2022 20:20

No its ridiculous. A nice storage unit fine.

JessicaPeach · 13/11/2022 20:20

I have one of these that I used for breastmilk expressed during the night, they are absolutely tiny so I wouldn't worry about the food aspect, you can maybe fit a couple of cans of coke in there and not much else

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/11/2022 20:23

If they are anything like mini fridges they are noisy

I hear you on her having a good life balance, but this is a bit extreme (for anyone outside the beauty industry really), so I really wouldn’t - she’s rapidly heading into her most self conscious years, and a skin care obsession probably isn’t helpful.

Can you get her a nice little box to stick a few things in the fridge?

brighterthanthemoon · 13/11/2022 20:23

Maybe buy her some really good sunscreen if she's in to skin care?

GFLoser · 13/11/2022 20:23

No judgement from me OP.
I had one though and it was pretty small but WOW it was noisy and kicked out some heat, just so you know.

canyoutoleratethis · 13/11/2022 20:26

@CanYouFeelMyHeart yes, trying on my mum's make up was fun. That's a totally different level to having my own fridge to fill up with products. It's toxic consumerist nonsense. But if you want to encourage that in your DD, then crack on

I agree. There's letting her explore skin care and there's this. Unless you live in a really hot country there is no need. She can pop a face mask in the fridge.

BHRK · 13/11/2022 20:28

I’m thinking of getting my DD one, she’d love it and like you say, all over YouTube. Can’t see them being more of a fire risk than anything else! Will check out the noise levels though…

CanYouFeelMyHeart · 13/11/2022 20:29

Skincare is toxic. Er, ok.

Thanks for giving me your blessing, must have been hard to type while you looked down your nose.

OnABreeze · 13/11/2022 20:29

@Caaarrrl agreed! Respect works both ways when your child is an adult!

brighterthanthemoon · 13/11/2022 20:30

A mini fridge is a student purchase not an 11 year old
