As a follow on from another thread where we are discussing our wrapping as we go, I noticed a lot of people wrap and put under the tree as they go. Which of course looks lovely. And I used to do this. Until the following happened to my dear friend, and never again...

DF had the most stunning tree every year, set in her bay window. And she would (bar the youngest DC presents) wrap things, also beautifully and place them under the tree throughout December. Honestly looked like something from a high end magazine shoot, she would go to so much effort, and just had the knack.

Because it was moderately visible, (she had shutters but they would be open during daylight) some robbing arsehole also saw them. And broke in whilst her and her family slept, and stole the lot on Dec 22nd.

When she reported this to the police, she was told it was the most prolific week for burglary every year. Because thieves knew people had a pile of brand new expensive items all placed together, it's like a dream for them.

Even though DF's tree was only visible from the back garden, these people obviously scout the area and maybe even the night before had accessed all the gardens in her street to see the respective "hauls".

Naturally, she was devastated and didn't have the time, nor money, to replace everything, as well as the awful act itself to deal with immediately before Christmas Day.

That was the last year my presents went under the tree a moment before they had too.

I guess because we can't imagine ever doing something this low, you kind of don't think that someone would ever literally steal children's presents from under a tree as they sleep.

Most people are probably aware of a slight risk, but maybe don't know it's the week of the year with the highest level of household burglary, by some margin. I certainly didn't.

I know it's not the nicest thing to have to consider, but if there's anything we can do to mitigate these arseholes targeting our homes, it's a good thing. I just wanted to share the story and raise awareness.

Xx

Yep. And also dispose of packaging carefully afterwards. They check through bins after Christmas to get an idea of what presents have been given.

AnApparitionQuipped · 13/11/2022 17:28

Using reusable gift bags benefits the environment but also avoids the need to wrap in advance as the present can be slipped into the bag in seconds.

That wouldn't have occurred to me either. Duly noted, thank you!

Our tree is at the back and the gifts very small so invisible to burglars but this won’t be the case for everyone I know so I will post this to friends on Facebook & the community Facebook group for the town. Thank you for raising this.

mam0918 · 13/11/2022 17:51

They would be very disappointed if they robbed us as non of the expensive stuff is under the tree, Santa brings the expensive stuff (and good luck to any robber that can get in our ottoman bed with us sleeping in it)... if they go for the tree I hope they like bubble guns, second hand books and wierd/niche teddy bears lol.

Honestly the most expensive thing under our tree is going to be a £13 watch.

That said I have 3 hyper kids and 2 pets they would break in and exclaim 'fuck me, lets go they have clearly already been tossed by someone else' lol.

CornishGem1975 · 13/11/2022 17:59

There aren't any presents under the tree until everyone has gone to bed on Christmas Eve because that's when Santa comes! (or because if I did they'd be ransacked by the kids constantly...)

BakewellGin1 · 13/11/2022 17:59

This is my biggest fear every year which is why DC presents are wrapped, but stored in parents loft until Christmas Eve morning. They then go in my bedroom and DC are kept out, then downstairs at around 11pm Christmas Eve.

I am paranoid as I'm home alone mostly with the DC so in the winter I sometimes have lamps and TV on timer if I go to bed early.

I empty bins and have a trip the tip as close to Christmas Eve as I can and then also am there Boxing Day to get rid of wrapping and boxes especially those from any electrical items.

AlwaysLatte · 13/11/2022 18:06

That's so awful. I hope they got caught.
We've got a lockable storage room and wrap and put them in there, then put them out on Christmas Eve as it's become the tradition for our children. Feels odd changing it now!

Tamothy · 13/11/2022 18:11

They would be disappointed in our presents this year - mostly second hand toys and a ukulele I bought for a pound at the tip!

It is really horrible though. My aunt was burgled before Christmas whilst she was visiting us. Everything was taken and their only present was from us because we only gave it to them on that day. It takes a particularly shitty kind of person to steal Christmas presents!

Redcisco · 13/11/2022 18:15

Also for those with freezers in garage.

This happened to my entire street.

Apart from my dad caught them when our dog woke up and started barking. They had loaded their car with the food from all the freezers on the street but we were the last house at the end of the couldesac.

My dad had a rotten temper and was pretty strong back in the day. He beat the shit out of the two young lads.

It was 2 days before Christmas.

Mrsfussypants1 · 13/11/2022 18:36

@TwinsAndTiramisu thanks for sharing. Christmas burlarys are one of those things you forget about when caught up in the festivities, and now with the cost of living not a nice thing at all for someone to experience. When money gets tight burlarys increase, same with shoplifting too.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 13/11/2022 18:43

I thought most people knew this. Even on Christmas Eve I make sure all the blinds are closed before we start getting presents out.

Badnewsoracle · 13/11/2022 19:03

Any burglar who did this to us would be sorely disappointed - all the beautifully wrapped 'gifts' under our tree are fake. Purely decorative 😛

user375242 · 13/11/2022 19:50

The most common burglary of Christmas presents is from garden sheds. Easier to break into than a house, and a common place for people to hide children's presents.

CoolShoeshine · 13/11/2022 22:20

When I was a child we had a load of presents taken by someone breaking into our car by smashing a window. The presents were on the back seat ready to be delivered.

Dolares · 13/11/2022 22:37

@Badnewsoracle We have fake presents under our tree too. All real presents are hidden in wardrobes until Christmas eve night.

So awful for families to have their Christmas ruined.

With this - I do understand you wouldn't lose anything of monetary value, but it's still an invitation by having boxes, as the burglar won't know they are empty. I think part of the situation, is the devastation of losing all the gifts as such short notice, but the other part is having a nasty individual, smashing into and creeping about your home. I'd hate that and find it so violating and unnerving. I think that awful feeling would far outweigh the silver lining of having no actual presents taken.

Agree - and if they picked up obviously empty boxes, they wouldn't leave empty-handed if they could help it. They'd pick up anything else they could easily get hold of and carry.

You think they'd leave, disappointed, without taking the rest of your stuff?!

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 13/11/2022 23:10

Our tree is at the back so no chance to be seen from the outside. I’d like to see them try break into our house. My dog is a psycho especially where we are concerned. If someone comes within 20 yards of our front drive she knows...
I wrap and put them under straight away... except presents from Santa for obvious reasons those are hidden 😌

Floralnomad · 13/11/2022 23:14

We don’t put any presents under the tree as our dog is an expert at unwrapping but sadly can’t read the labels so unwraps everyone’s presents not just his own . Even if presents aren’t visible pre Christmas is a big time for burglaries because they know people will have bought presents , putting them under the tree just makes you easier to rob .

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 13/11/2022 23:16

We also have cctv and an alarm....

reluctantbrit · 14/11/2022 07:50

It's unfortunate a well known fact and most insurance companies actually cover a higher content amount during December.

We have our tree in the front room, directly in the bay window from the 22nd onwards. No space anywhere else. But - we don't have candles on until the 24th and as they are real wax candels they are never on when we aren't in the room.

Also, no presents until Father Christmas comes. What is dropped off earlier from family and friends is upstairs in my office.

InDreamland · 14/11/2022 08:52

This is awful, your poor friend. I hope the b45t4rd5 were caught. Not that that would make the experience feel any less traumatic for your friend and her family.

I worry about this every year so put minimal presents under the tree until Christmas eve. The only place we have space for the tree is in our front room. We have steps leading up to our house though so it's not easy to see what we have under the tree from the street, we also have a Ring doorbell which picks up anyone coming near the house. We're also right at the end of a cul de sac. I always hope every year that makes us slightly less of a target.

Sadly with the cost of living crisis burglaries and shoplifting will rise as a PP has mentioned.

I worry about this constantly. My DP always wants to have the presents under the tree, which I understand as it looks pretty and it's traditional ect. I wouldn't be able to sleep though, so they are completely hidden away until Christmas morning. I just get up before everyone else and take them downstairs
