Adult DC and Christmas

KittenCatt · 13/11/2022 09:35

Those of you with adult DC, do you still buy for them at Christmas?

I’m an adult DC in my mid 20s, and my mother and I still exchange stockings and Christmas gifts. I’m just asking out of curiosity because every family is different.😊

I don't have adult dc (I have a 14 month old) but my parents still get me gifts and so do my boyfriends parents. It's less now I have my own child but we still get each other things

ApolloandDaphne · 13/11/2022 11:04

My DDs are 25 and 30. We always buy for each other. If they are here they also get a stocking. I also exchange gifts with my DM and we are 60 and 82!

Justcallmebebes · 13/11/2022 11:15

I have adult DC and grandkids and I buy for them all but they do get me lovely presents too

KittenCatt · 13/11/2022 11:35

@ApolloandDaphne That’s so wholesome! Love it. 😍

My mum doesn't buy me presents, she gives others cash. I buy her presents and my oldest child is 23years old and I buy him presents and a stocking

KangarooKenny · 13/11/2022 12:08

Yes. I buy my adult DC presents, and my DF, and I bet presents back.
I will never not get them presents, even if they have their own kids.

I have 3 adult DC and 1 adult grandchild with their accompanying partners. We do a Secret Santa couple wise with a £30 limit.

mondaytosunday · 13/11/2022 12:11

Yes, but got rid of stockings by the time they were teenagers. Fewer, better quality things. My stepsons (now 30s) both have babies so the adults get a relatively small token gift and babies get the bulk! Much more fun to buy for!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/11/2022 12:21

Mine are 20 and 23 and still get presents ( though my DS , the 23yo is a right little Bah Humbug and only (he says) enjoys the Christmas Dinner )
He doesn't like "things" so at his request we give him cash which he saves . No point in buying him stuff he doesn't want or need so it makes total sense .
He got big presents for his 18th/21st as a combined birthday/Christmas (December birthday)
He is in essence the antidote to the comsummerism and commercialised Christmas spending .

My DD is very into Christmas , her main presents are clothes. jewellery , And she'll happily potter round Bluewater with me on a late night shopping trip

I don't do stockings like we used to ( though their presents are usually tiny so fit inside the stockings they have )

They have a December 1st Bag with robe, pyjamas, underwear, socks , some sweets and toiletries . All things they'd use anyway .
Not Christmas pyjamas but some nice winter ones .

KittenCatt · 13/11/2022 12:29

I love the idea of a December the 1st bag. Though, my mother and I have always exchanged that sort of thing on Christmas Eve. New pjs, a snack and hot chocolate. It’s something we have done since I was small.

Stockings are for consumables since I live in a small flat, so I don’t have much storage for “stuff”. I usually get things like shower gel, Garnier sheet masks, facial cleanser etc.

I still get presents from my parents. My parents still get presents from their parents. I dont think it will ever stop.

Motnight · 13/11/2022 12:38

My dd is 25. The family cat still buys her Xmas presents 🎄😂 As Xmas approaches I take photos of the cat and send them to her via our family WhatsApp explaining where he has been shopping for the day 😬

BatshitCrazyWoman · 13/11/2022 12:42

My DC are 30 and 27, and we give each other presents. I also buy for my cat 😻 😂

KittenCatt · 13/11/2022 12:43

@Motnight I’m 26 and I WISH my mother would do that 😂

My adult DC in their 20’s always say they want cash.
I think it’s a cunning plan because they know I will give them money but then can’t resist buying them presents as well.

hiredandsqueak · 13/11/2022 13:02

Yes I buy them gifts, and partners and grandchildren. They buy me gifts as well. I also fill a stocking for them as they tend to come here for Christmas.

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 13/11/2022 13:05

Adult dc are 18th, 21,28 and 33. Still get stockings and gifts as usual!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 13/11/2022 14:06

My DS's are 28,25,and 21.. yes I buy and always will. This year for example 2 have new AirPods Pro2 and DS2 hasn't decided but he'll have roughly the same value
I enjoy spoiling them, and they get from no one else.
They tend to join together to get me a bigger gift these days

Floralnomad · 13/11/2022 14:11

Our children are 29 & 23 and we all buy for each other . Both of my children prefer buying for others than receiving and they buy for grandparents ( only 1 left ) and aunts / uncles on my side of the family . We always spend Christmas Day together . Mine have never wanted cash even as teenagers .

OnlyTheBravest · 13/11/2022 14:12

DC over 19 are all a part of family secret santa. £50 limit, so everyone has something nice to open. This works for us as we all have decent incomes and do not need anything. We are not big on Christmas consumerism but enjoy the season of Christmas as a family e.g. baking, gaming, carol concerts.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/11/2022 14:15

Our cats get a Dreamies Stocking each from us ( and a share of DS chicken)

The cats do a Badly Wrapped Present for DD and DS , past things have been a guitar strap or wallet of picks for DS , small bag or similar for DD but wrapped really dodgily and a clump of hair stuck in the tape . I stole this from MN Xmas Grin

Jakadaal · 13/11/2022 14:16

My 91 year old DM still buys for myself and my older sisters Flowers or rather we buy them and then she gives us them at Christmas. I still do stockings for my dc 20 & 19. DH and I exchange stockings and anyone adult staying with us also gets a stocking

YorkieTheRabbit · 13/11/2022 14:24

My parents gave presents until dementia took hold,. I still gave them gifts until they died.
DP’s parents stopped giving grand children gifts when they were 18, and they started to give cash to us and DP’s siblings for Christmas but gifts for birthdays.

I don’t have children but DP does, it’s getting to the point where we will stop, they are late 30’s and one has children of their own. It’s five months since my birthday and three since his, we didn’t receive either a card or present despite being asked for ideas.
I’ve already bought their Christmas stuff but don’t think it will continue after this year.

Witchofthedales · 13/11/2022 14:28

Yes, I do, and their partners although not the amount I bought when they were small obviously. My mum used to buy me presents too.

KittenCatt · 13/11/2022 17:36

@Floralnomad Im the exact same, I’ve never wanted cash for Christmas, even as a teen. Getting money for Christmas takes out the fun of it, for me personally! I can understand that money is easier though to gift though😊
