Hi all 🤶🏻

Does anyone have fab suggestions for a Christmassy long weekend (Christmas markets, lovely little towns etc- not London, that’s where we live and Winter Wonderland is so commercial- we are looking for something as genuinely christmassy as possible) getaway within the uk? Was hoping to take DP and myself away to Germany for a Christmas market getaway this year but we are unable to due to his job commitments and my passport needing renewed and apparently that can take up to ten weeks 😬 so I think it’s on the cards for next year instead!

ideas and recommendations and any tips very very welcome please ❤️

I live in Edinburgh and I couldn't recommend the market at all. The last few years - pre covid - it was just so busy that it felt really rammed in and not at all enjoyable.

This!! It’s hideous, queues were blocking the pavement on Princes street. It ruins the grass on the gardens every year which takes 6 months to recover no doubt at the expense of local council tax payers and the organisers seem to have some dodgy deal with the council whereby they don’t need permission to do whatever the hell they want. I’m not just avoiding it, I’m actively boycotting it!

Not Nottingham. It was rubbish. Overpriced food and attractions (£3 for a kid to go down a helter skelter ONCE, £7 for 5 mini doughnuts...you get the picture). Avoid avoid avoid!

York lass here. The Christmas Market is extremely popular (which of course is great for the city). It is absolutely rammed though - but I guess I'm coming from a local point of view (many of us avoid it for that reason!).

Just bear in mind that many hotels may request a minimum of 2 nights' stay if you're thinking of staying over. At this late stage it may also be difficult to get hotel reservations. Don't got to the stalls in Parliament St (main area for stalls). Go slightly off track and go to the Shambles food market instead - just a 5 minute walk from the stalls but hidden from view. There are more stalls in coppergate (near the Jorvik museum) which many seem to miss.

Have a wander in Little Stonegate (off Petergate / stonegate). Not stalls, but a pedestrian area worth a look with lovely lights and several shops and places to eat.

Arrive early and definitely before 11am ish if you're adverse to crowds!

Hi,

Where is best to eat in York centre near the markets? Are they're any good pubs? We found it difficult to find anywhere last year. The 2 places we used to go to had shut down.

TIA

Oh my goodness! There are so many places to eat and drink. What sort of thing are you looking for? Pretty much anything in the city centre is close to the markets, and lots within a 5 min walk. Let me know what you're looking for and im sure I can recommend a few places.

Grassington in North Yorkshire Dales do the most amazing Victorian Christmas weekend

Bath is really pretty. A lovely market and easy to get to from London

That would be amazing thank you 😊 I'm looking for a nice pub, one where we don't have to pre-book a table if possible 😁

@Soccermumamir - right, here goes!

Very close to the Shambles and 5 mins from the Christmas market:

Duke of York on King's Square (top of shambles). Good food.
Pivni York on Patrick Pool - tiny place near the Shambles Market. Good continental beers and candlelit.

On Goodramgate, near the Brown's department store end of the Christmas market:
Royal Oak, Golden Slipper and the Old White Swan (locally known as the mucky duck) - very traditional and in ancient buildings. I like the Royal Oak best.

On Fossgate, round the corner from M&S at the bottom end of the Christmas market:
The Blue Bell - tiny, ancient place. Interior hasn't changed in decades (in a good way!). Worth a look if you can get in.

Also on fossgate is the Fossgate Tap and the Fossgate Social. The latter is more like a continental cafe bar and has a really nice courtyard out back.
Fossgate is worth a look anyway: pedestrianised, some nice places to eat and delis etc.

On Petergate very close to the minster:
Three Legged Mare
Eagle and Child

This is just off the top of my head - there are more!

York is very compact, so where something looks like a bit of a walk, it isn't really.

Hope this helps!

Ooh thank you so much 🙂 I've screenshot this lol Taking my mum next Saturday so I'm glad there's plenty of places nearby to sit down and eat.

Thank you again 😊

We had a day trip to Bath last Friday (stayed in Bristol) and I thought the market was mostly good. It is spread out but we bought a few bits and would return. Also went to a lovely Tapas restaurant for an early dinner.
We walked by some of the stuff in Bristol and that was crap.

We live in Edinburgh and it's been a bit crazy at the Christmas market this year, they've split it up over three sections (2 in princes street and 1 at George square) this year but honestly I'd say the crowds and the queues have been worse that way. We went last week but it just wasn't an enjoyable experience and you just felt rushed through the whole thing. we like to go through a couple of times, take our DD during the day then I usually go with my mum and sister and we make a night of it but we'll be avoiding it anymore this year.

rookiemere · 04/12/2022 20:12

@girlmom23 thanks for the heads up
about Edinburgh.

I had thought about visiting but saw pictures of long queues on FB today, so suspect I won't bother.

I live in Manchester and hate the Manchester markets
They sell the same overpriced tat every year and the stalls are repeated so very repetitive
They are too busy for me though I did have a mulled wine yesterday as it was quiet

I went into Manchester for an event at the Catherdral today. I'm born and bred and I try and avoid it like the plague.

They're everywhere on every square in Manchester. You can't get away from them.
