Very light Christmas canapes

Looking for 4-5 canapé ideas ahead of Christmas dinner. We are having a few friends in for an hour Christmas late morning.
I want to offer a few nibbles but light enough that it doesn't detract from their or our Christmas meal. We don't do a starter on Christmas Day so the nibbles will double as a starter, friends know we'll be doing canapes and have said it will replace their starter too.

A lot of my usual canapes are cheese or chorizo based but they are too rich for ahead of a big meal and my staple party Canapé of sticky sausages to be avoided - too heavy + we'll have sausage with the main meal. I'd rather avoid bread & pastry bases as too filling. Could use thin crackers but need to find some that are GF.

I've got as far as melon cubes wrapped in prosciutto; mini praw; smoked salmon & cream cheese on a cucumber base.
Bowls of veg crisps. Olives perhaps?

Maybe that's enough, and will be my fall back but not very inspiring, Any other ideas please?

Caprese skewers

PushingAnElephantUpTheStairs · 10/11/2022 10:43

How much effort are you wanting to put in?

One of the loveliest canapes I've ever had was a beetroot macaron with a horseradish cream but it would take quite a bit of time.

Mini toast with a cube of cranberry and goats cheese
roasted veg skewers
tandoori bites
prawn cocktail in a lettuce boat
breaded mozzarella sticks

YuliaJollyberry · 10/11/2022 11:15

I do mini versions of starters so pretty much the things you’ve already mentioned really.
Variety of toppings on the cucumber rounds, salmon mousse is nice.
Pear, roquefort and parma wraps with the melon and prosciutto cubes.
Sometimes we also have those tiny peppers stuffed with goat cheese (they are a little oily so that’s soaked up with kitchen roll before plating).
Soup or gazpacho in little glasses on arrival.
Devils on horseback.
I’ve used potato crisps as a base for toppings before, with the cheeseboard though not before the meal.

Dates stuffed with hard cheese, wrapped in Parma ham and warmed in the oven. I’m not a date lover but they are delicious.

kateandme · 10/11/2022 11:28

But also this is fantastic and basically makes canapés portions

Thank you. I'll use all of these at some point but still looking for some lighter ones to have ahead of Christmas lunch.

Filo pastry is light enough I would think, make into little cups and fill with creamed mushrooms or maybe red onion chutney and a sprinkle of feta cheese.

Teeny weeny piping hot Yorkshire puddings (all air) with a smear of smoked trout pate. Glorious.

LadySpratt · 10/11/2022 22:25
  • Prawn and cocktail sauce on a small inner leaf of baby gem lettuce
  • Small square of rye bread (the one that’s like a cork tile) topped with slice of Brie and half a grape / slice of pear and walnut half or Roquefort
  • Croustades filled with horseradish crème fraîche and smoked salmon with a garnish of dill or caviar
  • Tiny curried veg puff pastry parcels - delicious, but an absolute faff
  • Thin round of crispy baguette base ( do it by thinly slicing a part baked baguette and then cook it) topped with tapenade and a slice of a sweet cherry tomato
  • If you’re really feeling like something a bit more spicy you can top a tortilla chip with a small amount of a home-made Tex Max trio
I’m sure there are others that I do, but these are popular. Done them for years.

Do you know what, I think they would be everyone's favourite and safe a lot of work 😂

Thanks all, more lovely sounding Canapés, which will get made at some point if not Christmas Day.
Just going back to my OP, I am trying to avoid bread, pastry, cheese and meat (not counting bacon/prosciutto in that) to make the Canapés less rich and filling ahead of Christmas Dinner.

I've picked up a couple of ideas thank you.

Olives & pickles
Crudite
Mushroom caps broiled with worcestershire

OP- do you realise that people have made some great suggestions- which could be tweaked to be lighter, smaller, less filling, less canapes- yet you have continued to want something even lighter!!! May I suggest you serve them plain air and therefore nothing at all before the main meal?!?! 😁

Melon balls wrapped in prosciutto is a great idea of yours OP. I was going to suggest a light, airy, piped, salmon (or other flavoured) mousse in a vol-a-vent- but I see pastry isn't allowed. Could it be served on a decorative, serving spoon instead?

A single, Chinese style dumpling served on a Chinese soup spoon with a drizzle of soy sauce and sesame oil, with black sesame seeds sprinkled on top? Ahh- a pastry again- sorry.

A slice of cucumber (replacing a cracker), cream cheese, smoked salmon and capers. Or the same cucumber and cream cheese but Italian inspired with a basil leaf, sun dried tomato and Italian herbs sprinkled over?

Stuffed eggs? Boiled eggs halved, mix the yolks with mayonnaise or light yoghurt. Add any combination you prefer. Finely chopped onions, curry powder, parsley or dill. Pipe back into the egg white. A tiny sprinkle of paprika can look good on top.

Chicory leaves with a pesto or blue cheese filling?

Look up pinchos recipes from the Basque region. They vary in size, but served on a toothpick, so some are smaller and might be closer to what you are looking for.

I'm sure it will be delicious whatever you choose.

Wow, that was a bit harsh. I did say in the OP I was trying to avoid bread, pastry and cheese. So if people offer some lovely suggestions, which I have said I will use another time, just not on Christmas Day because they use the bread, cheese and pastry I am trying to avoid I'm not sure I deserved that response.

Thanks for the more constructive suggestions, appreciated.

I would just put out some crudities a few dips and mini bread sticks, grapes, a salmon mouse and a cheese dip .

Its more colourful and appetising than most brown canapés, you can make it look really pretty.

Wee bits on toothpicks:

Olive, white anchovy, peppadew
Smoked salmon, caper berry

Strip of sirloin, roast cherry tomato, balsamic dressing
Lamb meatball, quick pickled cucumber slice, harissa dressing

Roast aubergine cube, haloumi or tofu cube, tahini dressing
Roast butternut squash cube, petal of roast red onion, lemon yoghurt dressing

AvocadoPlant · 11/11/2022 07:22

Blanched asparagus wrapped in Parma ham and grilled. Light and very flavourful

As an aside we used to have all our neighbours over on Christmas Day from around 12-2pm. House full with around 30 guests and honestly we just served drinks and had bowls of crisps, nuts and chocolates dotted around. We did this every year for about 5 years (before we moved house), it was easy and fun.

Chocolateteabag · 11/11/2022 07:28

I wouldn't avoid the bread or pastry options but just make them a quarter of the size and more "showy"

Make them really just a mouthful rather than the two or three bite canapés you often get

Serve on skewers or in cups

Gazpacho in small shot glasses would be different?

ShakeYourFeathers · 11/11/2022 10:29

Salmon Bellinis. Got down well here. You get them pre-made in Tesco and heat them in the oven. Can be while the Turkey is in there. Add cream cheese and salmon.
